Making Concrete Dragon Eggs

Mrs. Brown wanted to try dragon eggs! They look so cool and otherworldly and it seemed like a pretty easy process to replicate.
It wasn't quite the 3 easy steps I was promised, but I believe I've found a method that works very well and should be repeatable for anyone else who wants to attempt it. Just a note, we waited for a full 24 hours from the last pour till cracking the egg open.

I like your sifting song. I used to have a huge cat named Spot. His theme song was "You weigh 16 tons, and what do you get? A bowl of kibble and a trip to the vet. St. Peter don't you call me, 'cause I can't go. I owe my soul to the cat food store."

what would concrete powder do in resin? that's the real question. like, would the resin harden like normal or would the moisture activate the concrete powder? then would you be able to turn it?

I would like to see what the concrete/resin mixture looks like, but turning it would probably destroy either the tools or the lathe, or maybe just Peter's hands. Regardless, the turning of concrete is probably not the greatest idea.
@g33kf0x
@g33kf0x 7 лет назад
William Ross without knowing the properties of the mixed combination, we can't know that. maybe because of the heat it creates a bunch of tiny air bubbles that actually make it super easy to turn. or it becomes an ungodly dense material that's as hard as steel.

I searched this on buzzfeed, and I think the person who wrote the article made up the instructions to an already existing picture. The eggs in the picture look painted grey on their outsides, so I'm thinking they could've been made out of plaster. Someone should try this with plaster, which could possibly be stronger in this thickness than cement. Then use a bucket of warm water (so it sets faster) to rotate it in. Shouldn't take too long.

Okay okay okay. I have an idea. It comes from the land of baking! Add about a cup of water to a balloon and blow it up to the size you want. Make the concrete a pourable consistency. DIP THE BALOON into the concrete and set it the way you want it to sit when hardened. Repeat several times to build up thickness. Seeing as you would be breaking part of the "shell" anyways, position the knot of the balloon where you would want to break the shell. This is the same idea used to create chocolate bowls or hollow chocolates. NOTICE ME!!!!!😢😢😢😢

@waynepiaskowski7655
@waynepiaskowski7655 7 лет назад
Tiffani great thought, things made from flour are more sticky than concrete so while its a good thought thats not going to work so well unless you painted the balloons with a film of concrete bonding agent. I have a lot of experience with concrete. If you don't mix concrete to the correct consistency it does things you don't want it to do. Using concrete countertop mix from Quikrete would probably be the easiest bet. It comes in an 80lb blue bag. You would still need to sieve out the aggregate. This way we can avoid the entire conversation of superplasticizer and other additives. Concrete is very temperature sensitive. Use cold water and keep it cold while rolling it otherwise it will cure faster. Even the heat from your hands should be avoided in this case. You could also add latex to the mix to increase its strength and bond to the balloon. Not so sure you would want to use short strand fibreglass but it might help to hold the shape during the process.... I may give this a try during my next concrete project.

I see in another comment that pure cement works better instead of concrete. Do you think it would work if you dipped the balloon into concrete rather than concrete?

Cement/concrete is TOTALLY the wrong material for making hollow casts. What you want is ceramic, specifically slipcasting. Ceramic slip is really cheap (Less than 20 dollars a gallon), making a plaster mold is simple, and the only really tricky part would be firing the piece without a kiln -- but there's lots of articles online about how to fire pottery inside a simple charcoal kettle grill. Plus with a proper mold, you could quickly make multiple copies.

With the plaster mold you would lose the individuality. However, you could pour slip over a leather hard cast egg to get great texture.
@user-tk8xr2os2w
@user-tk8xr2os2w 7 лет назад
you could also do a pit fire instead. lots cheaper and pretty easy. dig a hole, fill with fire and your ceramics. let burn all day. you get really cool looking stuff out of it too. the char marks would really help authenticate your egg.

its more the 'krete' because its *concrete* mix, not cement. Concrete has sand and aggregate in it, along with portland cement. What Peter needed was pure portland cement, without any sand or aggregate.

concrete is not just some form of "sand". To crystallize the concrete quick additives are also in that "sand". To dry very liquid concrete it needs more additive. So the concrete you used is not suitable for this project. Overhere in the Netherlands we have special concrete, in boxes of 1 kilogram, for these special projects. When mixed it has the consistency of eggwhite and hardens within 15 minutes. There...now you know.

Hi Peter, love your videos. What you mate from that concrete mix was mortar mix => concrete = (cement, sand, aggregate + water) when mortar = (cement, sand + water); 2nd u could make a negative mold of an egg (styro), hang an inflated ballon on the inside, and fill it up with mortar, thin fi=3mm iron wires => great for reinforcement of the mortar. Also possible to make the crack line out of thin styro strips glued to the balloon

Peter, I have a suggestion. Toilet bowls, sinks and many other china or porcelain things are made like this: 1) Make a mould out of Plaster of Paris of the desired finished article; might be two or three or more parts that all fit together .precisely', and leave a 'filling' hole (see note at bottom) 2) Make mould slightly bigger than desired to allow for later contraction. 3) Mix up some fairly runny (about double cream consistency) Plaster of Paris (or similar), close the mould parts together having used some kind of 'release' agent inside the mould and fill mould. 4) allow mould to sit still for perhaps 30 - 60mins (Trial and error) 5) unplug/uncover filling hole and empty STILL LIQUID contents into a container ready for next use. Hopefully, the Plaster of Paris mould will have absorbed quite a lot of the moisture from the liquid PofP immediately next to the mould. Perhaps to a thickness (trial and error) of 2 - 4 mm 6) Gently heat mould to evaporate any remaining moisture until PofP is completely set. 7) separate mould parts to reveal a glorious dragon's egg. The filling hole might easily be the hole in the egg that you look into when it's finished. 8) thoroughly heat the mould parts (but not necessarily to a high temp) for next use. The PofP needs to be as dry as possible in order to absorb moisture from the liquid PofP Hope that helps, but if you need any further explanation, let me know. Regards Mark in the UK. p.s. Love your channel

If someone wants to replicate this over-mold style make sure that each pour is done somewhat close together because concrete will crack and fracture on the join lines if one is wet and the other dry. What they probably did in the buzzfeed video (I haven't seen it) is use a retarder admix (chemical addition) to slow the set time and make a mixture that is very close to a .5 water to cement ratio (W/C ratio); Higher than that it may not set at all. The mix they gave (1/3 cup water to 2/3 cup cement) has roughly a W/C of .17lb water /.55lb cement (.31 ratio). Overall I have no idea how they would make a hollow concrete ball inside a single balloon with a thick or a thin mix. Loved the video Peter, keep up the good work!

The mix in the buzzfeed video says 1 cup "quick-set concrete" to 1/3 cup water but it is incredibly wet and almost looks like they used a 1:1 or 1:(2/3) c:w ratio. It certainly appears that they poured in more than 1/3 cup of water, but its hard to really tell with their stop motion style of video editing.

@smackmybones1371

Peter Brown I had the same thought. the issue is that if you try to make the egg with this "Candle Making" method, where you tie support the balloon above the bucket and leave it submerged in the bucket of cement, it will only leave a cavity in a whole bucket. My idea is that you take the balloon and submerge it in cement to get a good coat and then take it out and hang it so that the 'nozzle' of the balloon is at the bottom, and then when it starts to harden, dip it again for another layer.
@baileymakes
@baileymakes 7 лет назад
I was going to suggest this as well. Try a sturdy string tied around a water balloon knot, coat in a smooth layer of cement (dipping maybe?) let dry and repeat for a thicker shell. Pop and remove balloon out the top opening, build/cover top hole with foil and/or tape, and coat with cement. Hatch and paint eggs as desired.

I tried this using mortar mix instead, blowing the balloon up first to stretch it out some. It worked on the third try, I had to get the mix just right (first time too thick, second time too thin)..

99.5% certain they used plaster of Paris in the original video

In the video description, they said concrete but I agree with you. Plaster of Paris or I was thinking maybe a mortar mix.

Peter Brown I believe a mixture of plaster of Paris and regular mortar would be ideal. Quick dries to fast. Finding the right ratio will be important as well. gonna try myself tomorrow...too curious.

I went back and looked at the pin about it. It looks like they used straight Portland Cement without the sand and gravel. It acts more like Plaster of Paris but is more sturdy once dry.

long ago I made concrete eggs...I used the larger plastic easter eggs you put candies in. I remember a friend had me spray oil in the egg forms first and after pouring and letting set just a bit, we carefully put them together. they hold the shape, and you can roll them to make sure it stays all coated. they turned out well, I didnt use tons of water..its like making pancake batter for me, you know when its right. it you put them together before they get all really set up, they stick together without a seam to speak of. its been a very long time. I am going to give it a try again, now you reminded me..but balloons aren't something I ever thought of using. plaster works really well too!

Why not try resin inside the balloon?

Couldn't you fill a balloon with the concrete slurry and then put a second balloon inside it and blow up the second balloon?
@normalone0884
@normalone0884 4 года назад
I was thinking that too but I feel like blowing up the balloons would be incredibly difficult and would cost a lot of time that would let the concrete harden

What I found good was by blowing up the balloon first then put it over the end of a bottle which contains the cement powder. You can fit alot more cement inside this way. Then do the same thing with water and shake it around

I have a few suggestions for this project: - Do not sift the mixture as fine. Sand give it more structural integrity. - Fill a balloon with the power/sand mixture - Add another balloon inside the previous balloon. - Then add the water, and mix it well. - After the mix blow up the inside balloon. this will hopefully create an even spread across the whole surface. - Once cured, and you want to open it, use a sharp object to cut it open, do not smash. Concrete is much weaker against focused pressure like cutting. This way there is much less chance of breaking off more than you wanted.
