Just a fun experiment with caustic chemicals and beautiful wood grain.
I had planned to do a welding project this week, but my main power is having issues and I cannot even run the clothes dryer, let alone my MIG welder.
So, I decided to give this experiment a try that I've had rattling around in my brain for a while. Let me know what you think!

I think if you used the spray bottle and dried it with the heat gun before it bled through you'd have higher definition

ya I was thinking using a bleach gel would also help. Also not using wood as a stencil and just using a regular sticker stencil.
@konzetsu6068

yea, i think one of the harder parts here would be to get the template to seal properly with defined edges, maybe make a negative and add a thin coat of varnish to the non-bleached areas, then bleach it with a positive image. edit: you can also singe the wood with a torch in an negative image to close the pores... was thinking of ways to saturate the fibers to avoid that kind of bleed
@paigebriggs7761
@paigebriggs7761 6 лет назад
Bleach is ineffective once it's dried, so you might have to do a lot of cycles of bleaching and drying to allow the wood time to be bleached.

What about slightly bleaching to make the grain pop? I have some highly figured walnut that becomes so dark when oiled that you lose the flame.
@AMTunLimited
@AMTunLimited 4 года назад
@@yeahhitsa3.0 there are a few man issues that I can see: first, walnut is so dark that any stain would basically be like sharpie and would be too dark to notice Second, the main purpose of stain is to accentuate grain structure (and more grain is more showing off that the thing is wood, which is more better according to modern aesthetic) Third, aesthetic dictates that pure wood is the best looking, because it's more natural. Walnut is especially valuable in this regard, as it has a very striking natural structure. Basically, wood looks great as it is, and walnut looks especially great within that group, and anything applied to it would diminish that quality of walnut.

I'd almost go a step further and say mill out a very shallow copy of the pattern with a CNC and then you could fill the milled out areas with gel bleach and then thickness the piece down to bring the surface level with the bleached milled area.

I was thinking you could laser etch the design into the oak 1 or 2 mm with an extra mm around the edge before you apply the bleach. That means you could sand back the area you want to remain dark and the deeper cut should reduce the bleeding along the grain.

I do love the experimentation vids you do. It really has that spontaneity, and the not knowing if it's worked or not really is great fun. I wonder if the template just stuck more firmly and uniformly in the areas where the definition was better. It's tempting to think of things like a finer spray, less of a saturation but with the drying in between coats etc. Lots of food for thought!

Here's an idea Peter: Take a similar piece, and bleach the entire surface. After it's dry, then CNC the negative of your pattern into it to expose the natural walnut color. Since the bleach doesn't penetrate very deep, you wouldn't have to remove a lot of material. (Also, what kind of CNC machine do you have?)

I wonder how spreading a thin layer of hot glue on the underside of the ply would do. Hitting it with a heatgun should melt it on there, and sanding afterwards should remove the excess. Probably worth a smaller test run though. You still run into capillary action no matter what, wood is a porous fiber, so that's always going to be an issue. I don't think you could cure the bleeding issue totally. I think spraying it down with the bottle and then not letting it sit too long before heat gunning it is the best strategy as far as that goes.

Great idea. A couple thoughts. With the wooden template you have a rigid template that is harder to seal tightly to your walnut. It is also going to absorb the bleach, and as it does, it will soften any crisp lines you have. As an extreme, think of what would happen if you used paper for your template. The bleach would spread through the paper, preventing a crisp line. Some other options: There is a double stick tape that has a bit of thickness to it. It is meant for projects like scrap booking to create some depth to the layers. The tape itself is a gel that is somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick. That would elevate your wooden template up off the walnut enough to not let them be in contact with each other, yet create a tighter seal. Alternatively, use something as your template that will not absorb the bleach but will have a tight seal to the walnut. A third option might be to use a reverse template, meaning you would use something cut in the shape of the bleaching you want to do. It would need to be able to hold the bleach (paper might be a good option this time). Lay down your reverse template in your final layout onto the walnut. Then gently brush your bleach onto your pattern until it is saturated enough to hold the bleach against the wood but not enough saturated that it runs away from the pattern. Apply more as the pattern template dries. You can gently peel up one corner of the pattern guild to see how it is progressing.

Peter- I'd try covering the area with packing tape, then glue your pattern down. Use a sharp marking knife to cut out the pattern. Be sure to go thur the packing tape and into the wood. The knife kerf will stop the capillary migration of the bleach to the surrounding area.

I have a few suggestions. 1. I would make a simpler bigger spaced out pattern so you wouldn't have to worry about the bleeding so much ruining the design. 2. I would spray the bleach from different angles in the sharp corners of the design. That's why it looked like it wasn't even because you were just spraying from above and not at an angle left to right do you understand what I'm trying to say? 3. I would only do a light first coat of bleach and then use your heat gun to see exactly what has been bleached and how much or if there was any bleeding yet. And just continue doing light coats of bleach and then using your heat gun until the desired effect is accomplished. And thank you for giving your wife credit for her tip! some men don't do that very often, it was nice to see you do so. And that's exactly why men need a woman's perspective sometimes! lol I always enjoy your videos, I live through you vicariously! If I could afford it I would have my own shop myself. 😏

I've done this with t-shirts. Vinyl is too stretchy to be reliable for fine detail, so I cut the stencil out of plastic coated freezer paper. Cut it out, lay it on your wood and go over it with an iron, which will slightly melt the plastic and adhere it to the wood, then spray the bleach (I used a 50/50 mix with water), dab up the excess liquid with a paper towel and hit it with the iron. Rinse and repeat until you've got your desired result. The heat helps to speed up the reaction, as well as drying the bleach so it doesn't have a chance to bleed. You can get incredibly crisp lines like this. I'd love to see you try this again, see how it would come out on walnut.

Oh my... I love this! And in my opinion especially the bleedouts make it beautiful. Now I need to find a way to do this or find someone to do this for me. Triforce on walnut - here I come.

I like that technique. It looks very weathered.

I actually really like the faded look the bleed through gives it. It almost looks as if it's an ancient relic that has been passed down for generations.

I️ have done something similar with vinyl like you suggested. The key is to spray the bleach and then immediately pat it dry so it doesn’t bleed. Though vinyl bleeds way less, if you pat dry after your results will come out much better.

I think the bleed actually looks really cool, gives it a weathered-type look

I think that would look really REALLY cool as like a weathered wood shield!! Also I would hit up your local art store and look for a masking product. It’s like a glue that peels off, and it should potentially make for some cleaner lines. But the bleed over effect was actually quite pretty, and I think cutting the pattern out just a little bit into the wood, bleaching that, and then finishing it off with some slightly tinted resin would probably look really beautiful.

something that *might* help minimize bleed a little bit is using a plastic or less absorbent template. Bleach is a very thin and unforgiving chemical, so it probably soaked into the wood template and made contact with the walnut in a lot of those places where significant bleeding occured. Either way, this style lookes really awesome! I'd love to see you use it to make a proper furniture piece or something with it!
