Wow this is great. You have shown us how to take the worst kind of garbage to turn it into something incredibly useful. I'm sure by braiding these you can make a very strong rope that can be as long as you needed it to be. Thanks for sharing

Just a quick tip in case anyone is wanting to do countersinks with drills. Its always easier to start with the larger bit to make the countersink hole first, then switch to the smaller bit to make the hole the rest of the way through. It keeps the bit from grabbing like you were having issues with.

Thanks. I learned what cordage is. Reminds me of the stuff newspapers were bundled in. It was glued or melted at the seam, and you pull to separate it, and the newspaper stack popped open.

Great jig for when you are home and have time. Thanks for sharing. Saw Creek Stewart create a jig with just a piece of wood and his bushcraft knife out in the woods. Similar results for when you really need that cordage.

This is a very creative method. Incredibly more efficient than trying to make cordage by hand from natural materials. I'd like to see how well the plastic holds knots, how much stretch it has, ect. I'm gonna dig through the junk draw in the garage tomorrow and see if I can experiment with this myself.

The other day I saw a Russian gentleman RU-vid I don’t remember what his name was. He put a valve stem from a car tire and brass one with a net works better for truck wheels he added air pressure to the bottle cap and then heated the bottle I moved it around so it blew up like a Christmas tree ornament and that enable them to get more material out of one bottle because it was all smooth. The Russians are so creative and keep things simple.

Awesome! I've done this before, but my purpose was to make weaving strips for an 'invisible' basket trap for fish. I never completed the project though -- the plastic was too smooth, so it was difficult to keep the weave tight. My cutting jig was a bit different (and more dangerous). The blade was hammered perpendicularly into the wood block, the plastic bottle spun horizontally, and I used a couple sets of washer guides to give me strips with a consistent width.

I think I like your take on this better than anyone else's. And my advice would be to move the whole set-up closer to the edge of the board because I think the key is to pull not just outward but also a little downward and that has more of an influence on keeping the ball rolling smoothly. Yes, you do also have to keep the whole bottle steady. Thanks!

Is that a double side razor blade? See if you can't find a single side razor blade. See what's happening, is the bevel of the blade is pushing the bottle up, so you're constantly fighting that bevel. If you got a single side blade, and put the beveled edge down, then the bevel will do most of the work for you.
@Ivan-L.

+Clint Carpentier You are right, chisel ground cutter works better. Took me some testing, but then it just went like through butter. I took a pencil sharpener, and got it even sharper. Works perfect.
@nathanielmasters2630

Maybe somebody has already said it in the hundreds of comments, but if you wanted to add a little more complexity an upright dowel from your jig platform could position a weight above the bottle, holding it in position & exerting steady downward pressure, freeing up your left hand. And while we're at it, positioning a turning shaft in front of this apparatus could pull the material over the cutter & neatly spool the cordage at the same time! As for comments here saying the idea is already too complex, if the world has ended or you are in the woods, just use a knife. But if you have a use for the cordage & want another use for the bottles, this looks like a very easy & fun jig to whip up when puttering around your shop, using materials you already have on hand. Thank you for posting. I have watched only a few of your videos so far but I am impressed, entertained, and subscribed. BTW, I enjoy your sense of humor and the blooper reels at the end of each edition.

Great vid! I'm thinking of a way to keep it so even pressure on the bottle is always applied. Do something like a Paper-towel holder (rod) that you can put the bottle over but it should protrude a good bit so you can perhaps fit some weights over the rod that can sit on top of the bottle so as the bottle is getting shorter the weights keep holding the bottle down. Take it a step further and attach the plastic to something like a fishing reel or other type of spinning device and just crank away.

Thats a very nice way of doing it. I used to make cordage like this using a tandy lace cutter designed for leather cutting. Apologies if this seems negative but I see mecahincal improvements everywhere. My advice to you would be to remove the label after you follow it for your initial cut, and add nails (2-3) along the back edge of the bottle to keep constant angling and pressure, also, feed the cordage part around the sides of two more nails almost set up like pulleys, with further washers after the cut itself, this will reduce the possibility of cutting off angle and slicing off the line of the cut. (if that makes sense) My using the tandy lace cutter method is far easier to carry in the field than a big block of wood but it was never very stable and also tended to split before I wanted it to... I definitely like this version for home use. Thank you for sharing it.

You could add a wooden dowel rod also to hold the bottle too. That would add extra support for the bottle. Set the bottle on the dowel rod with the rod growing through the bottom and top opening. I use a similar set up using the plastic cordage for basket weaving.

A circular cutout the diameter of the bottle could be used to stabilize the bottom of the bottle and give you more precise results and a clam shell or similar could be used to hold the top steady with even pressure. Anyway excellent idea. Thanks.
@Rustaholic777
@Rustaholic777 8 лет назад
Drilling those counter-sinks if you had a depth stop collar on your drill bit you would get two perfect holes easier.Also looking at how that was working for you I would put the cutting parts farther back on the wood.That way all of your bottle would stay on the surface and be more manageable. . . One further edit. Putting the assembly farther back then cutting a large circle of wood or plywood almost as large in diameter as the bottle screw that down cutting away where you need to for the cutting parts. . . That will help your bottle spin true much better.

Improvements to this design: Install the razor with the bevel down (so you are not fighting the bevel). Screw a dowel to the wooden base, and place the bottle over the dowel (more rigidity and consistency). Now that you have a portable plastic factory, figure out what to do with the mountain of plastic strips you will make!
