This is just a quick video describing the advantages of creating an MRE system. Custom MRE's can be made to fit your environment and your trip duration. Proper food selection is something that'll come with experience. Your ability to properly manage your food choices will greatly improve your energy levels in the outdoors. Thanks for viewing and remember this is a custom system for YOUR personal needs. Just because I have it does not make it right or mean that you must take this kind of stuff. Some knock off brands have no taste like heater meal but official mre's while not as good as momma makes are satisfying but they have to be official. Also like my dad would say when we were kids when you're hungry anything is good so nut up or shut up

guess im lucky cuz i love MRE's. Just stay far away from the eggs...they will clean you out. If you can find the Sloppy Joe ones...hoard them as much as you can...or give them to me, lol

ULINE sells 2,3,4 and 6mil poly tubing in many widths and 1,000 feet rolls. Also sells heat sealers. You can literally build survival kits, first aid kits, and maybe seal a change of socks and underwear for a mail drop. Although a vacuum sealer will help you stuff more in a bear canister.

wow he said gatorade is a huge morale boost, which it is when your camping or hiking its nice having something other than plain water after a while especially multiday hikes. and its always the little things that make a difference.

Cool video. Some questions: 1. What kind of vacuum sealer do you use/recommend? 2. What kind of plastic material/bags are those and where would you buy them? 3. Are they cook safe (i.e., could you pour boiling water in one end to mix ramen noodles) and BPA-free? 4. Do you/can you reuse them? 5. Is the plastic recycleable? 6. Repackaging food introduces bacteria so I assume these DYI-MREs have a short shelflife? Thanks!

Do you realize that if you take a package of food that ISN'T vacuum sealed, and put it in a bag and vacuum seal THAT bag, the first one is still not vacuum sealed. Are you positive your cheese and meat are vacuum sealed? Often, they are just sealed in a plastic sleeve. Great for short term, but not long term. Pre-packaged food comes with an expiry date that doesn't change just because you bought a vacuum sealer.

The gum in the military MREs isn't for freshening breath or anything similar. You eat the MRE, it stays in your gut. They're designed to be filling. When you have a bit of down time coming up, you chew the gum. About 20 minutes later your bowels move and you can get rid of what's stuck in your gut. That's why military MREs include the two little pieces of gum.

Store-bought processed foods are not that healthy.. Look at all of those additives.. I dehydrate just about everything.. I cook then dehydrate pastas, veggies and rice etc... Then I put meals together based on my everyday recipes.. I make chili potato soup, mac-n-cheese.. They might not taste exactly like my regular meals but they're pretty darn close..

Robin Conkel-hAnnan I found that is doesn't take very long to cook pasta vs rehydrating pasta. I like to use dehydrated vegetables and meat,and just add the pasta into the pot after the time for rehydration.

I'd like to know what he did with the Chili Mac? Do you break down the #10 can and seal a portion of it in the vacuum sealed bags? I think I missed that part or he forgot to show that part. ???

I like the way you made small "eat on the go" or "break time" packs, helps keep moral up when backpacking with young kids! What are you using for a evening meal?

What is the constant drum sound in the background? Gotta jet hearing that, do understand not liking MRE's, never loved them myself, but after ten years you learn to live with them and I dont have to pack them up, but your hiking and dont have to have them.

I always enjoyed the MRE's that were issued to us in the early 1990's. Worst yet, my favorites were the ones everybody else hated, which allowed me to profit during the traditional chow-time trading session. "Tell ya what, you give me your chiken ala stink, peanut butter, and sawdust bar, and you can have my Spaghetti and M&M's." I also liked the Tuna & Noodles, and the ham slice. Favorite snack was the sawdust bar with peanut butter! What the hell is wrong with me?

US-GI MREs have 2400 calories and the Civilian MREs have about 800 calories. Some surplus stores sell MRE components and the MELLENIUM BARS. DIY is the best way. A dehydrator with fruit rollup trays, vacuum sealer, for starters. US-GI MREs ARE Nitrogen flushed, but we're not doing long term storage. If you want, a carbon-dioxide (dry ice) flush and simple ziplock bag will last a JMT trip. Fresh GI-MREs are great. Avoid anyone selling brown-bagged MREs that are beyond 4 years old.

I've never had to eat them for more than a week, but I think attitude is a huge factor. If you look at it like last resort food, it's gona be gross. But if you look at it like I do, like a lunchable for adults lol, not so bad.

Well, I know you design this for a short hiking trips and it makes since for that. Still looking for something like 2 weeks. No, you wouldn't want to pack it as it would be the size of a case or so for a normal person. But something that would be better from a fixed camping point but quite remoted where there is no power etc. And the search continues. But thanks you did make some good points. I just have to expand on that.

By "actually" did you read that somewhere or have you actually dissected a few GI and civilian MREs, and actually counted calories in each? You would need to eat the cardboard packaging in the civilian MRE in order to get 1000 calories from it.

Actually, the Military MREs have about 1200 Calories and the Cilivian MREs have about 1000-1100 calories

I had an official MRI yesterday for the first time Potato beans and chicken in barbecue sauce and it was good the only thing I didn’t like was the coffee all the other stuff was good I was very happy with it

The jerky that you are showing was not vacuum sealed, it still had air in the bag. make sure you do, or know what your saying.

If you don’t like MRE then the problem is YOU not the food. Yes I don’t like some of it but that’s because I dont like that kind of food (such as chineese food). And I never HAD to eat an MRE

Bud you are missing the point to an mre, they contain everything you need for the day you do not have an antree or accessories like a leaf to wipey you butt too many nutz and berries for a marine or soldier but you might get an airmen to eat it you could call it a non veagan hippy dippy food ready to snack...sorry bud alot of us arent good with a whole days worth of food revolving around dehydrated fruit,berries and nutz and sum dehydrated(but also hippy grass fed) snacks the kidz will love it

MRE's are disgusting?????? Some of it is pretty damn good. In fact, I think most are very good. There will always be that 'shit on a shingle' that no one likes, but for the most part, I don't think you're being fair to them.

How can you like those nasty fake meat sticks and cheese packs and not like MRE's???? and Mountain House chili mac tastes worse than ANY MRE i've ever had!! I think maybe you just got some bad cases of MRE's becuase everyone i know likes them! They taste good, have good variety,they're filling and last for 20 years!!! I look forward to ripping open that brown bag at the end of a long day!!
