Thank you all for the kind words! This was so much fun! David, it was great to hang out again. You did a masterful job putting this together. I've never seen myself move so fast in making a pen before, lol!
@@Dosbomber Yes! Everything sells out so quickly that it's difficult to keep stock available. I do have a custom order form on the website for commissions.
OMG! I’ve been in love with Jonathan Brooks’ amazing rod stock since seeing Primary Manipulation I. Seeing the process is absolutely fascinating. Thank you so much for interviewing him and filming the process. I really want to get one of his pens! He is a master craftsman and artist.
Jonathan is such a nice person. And so generous to do this, showing his well-honed technique. A true master. I treasure each of my Brooks pens. Thanks for the video.
What a fabulous look at a fascinating process! Thanks, David. The Padres Sunset is remarkable and will no doubt be even more treasured by you because of the cool story behind it and your participation in its creation.
Thank you very much for this video. Jonathon created a pen (Georgetown made of Combustion resin) for me. It’s a beauty. Seeing the creation process makes my pen even more special.
Jonathon is a wonderful guy. I make an annual trip to South Carolina and order a new pen from him each year. He always goes way beyond what I envisioned and creates a pen for me that are beautiful and a joy to use.
I absolutely loved this video! Others will too! Artists at work always fascinate me, because I lack the artist’s touch, while appreciating that the artist produces. Craftsmanship is artistry, and the Carolinas have long been home to various craftsmen. Jonathon stands out, while also continuing a long tradition of the craftsman. I too love the Padre Sunset, though I went into the unveiling thinking I would love the other colors most. THANK YOU! THANK YOU BOTH! You created a marvelous experience for the viewer. :)
Great video of a very nice person and very talented maker. Jonathan is very generous with both his time and knowledge. It was a pleasure meeting you David, hope to meet up in the future!
Incredible! I very much enjoyed watching the whole process from blank making to pen turning. Jonathan's acrylics are absolutely stunning, I should really think about getting a custom pen made by him. I really hope that I can make this into a hobby of my own sometime in the future.
Jonathon is an artist at making his blanks. He did a demo for our club which my son, then a teenager, had been talking about making blanks. Once he saw Jonathans stuff and the work in it he declared I think we can just stick to buying them. lol A toast to a long future in the business Jonathan!!
That was a really really interesting video. Thanks to you both ! I was a little suspecious to the brown blank when it came out but both pens looks exceptionally gorgeous when finnished.
Great interview, demonstration and sneak peak behind the scenes. I VERY much enjoyed watching Jonathan work and describe his process. He knows his stuff! Thanks David and Jonathan and each of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
This has became one of my favourite videos, it's great to see how these resins are made. That Primary manipulation pen is the nicest resin I have seen yet.
Thanks to both of you for sharing this adventure with us. I learned a heck of a lot and never dreamed there were so many steps - in which each step had to be done exactly right, or else.... The price tag no longer seems so high. I would definitely be getting my own unique work of Art - and one that I would actually be putting to use.
Bravo Dave! Another great video. Wonderful to see a different aspect for the pen hobby. I have a Carolinas pen company pen and I love it already. This makes me appreciate it more. Thanks to Jonathan for the access.
Great video. I really enjoyed seeing that. I would like to have seen more about how he finishes the pens and it would have been cool to see the pens in direct sunlight. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to look into getting one of these myself.
As someone who is currently learning how to make pens, i thoroughly enjoyed every second of this video. Thank you David and Jonathan for showing us this process.
Two stunning pens, a great interview and fácinating process to watch. I've seen resin mixing and casting before, where the mix was cleared by vacuum rather than pressure, but the cure time much faster, perhaps due to smaller moulds. Produced optical quality clear model parts. This was great fun to watch. Thanks, David and Jonothan.
I recently had the pleasure to spend an afternoon with Jonathon. Super great guy and extremely talented!! He walked me through the steps of machining the blanks. I am now obsessed with making the kitless Bespoke style pens!
Absolutely fascinating, and what a joy and privilege to witness such a master craftsman in full flow. The passion and dedication is uplifting to watch. I have a Leonardo Momento Zero Grande Primary Manipulation II Stromboli on the way, and watching this has hugely deepened my appreciation before it’s even in my hands. A work of art to treasure for life.
This video was awesome. The Padre Sunset looks amazing. Thank you for giving us a peek into the process. Jonathon Brooks is a genius and everyone should go order one of his pens. Thanks, David. Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Love and use fountain pens. I have over 50 and plenty of ink. Both pens are stunning and will visit the site to see more. One just can't have too many fountain pens.
Hi David, I just recently started collecting pens that the pen material was created by Jonathon Brooks. As of now a Primary Manipulation #1, The Golden Rule and Bohemian Twilight. All fantastic pens. Still on the hunt for others he has created. Keep up the great reviews and interviews.
The blanks shooting up out of the mould really made me smile! I'm going to order a custom resin pen from my local maker here in the UK but I can't decide what colours I want!
Thank you so much. Very interesting to watch him (you guys) work! I think that just a tad more blue and a touch of turquoise would make it closer to what you see in the cave picture. 😊 Thx again!
I'm new to the world of fountain pens and I was at the Atlanta Pen Show 2023, and out of all the pens that caught my attention, I ended up buying a pen from Mythic Pen Company, and I didn't have a clue what I was buying. I just thought it was pretty. I found out later, it was a Primary Manipulation resin, which actually looks almost exactly like the pen shown in the video.
Jonathan makes this look way too easy! It's always so nice to be able to watch a craftsman in a flow just doing their thing and connecting with their creations. The shavings that come off the lathe, are they all just trashed or could they be repurposed into another project? I imagine they are probably slightly translucent and could look interesting suspended in a clear resin?
They are both very cool, but I think the "Sunset" was a better match for the picture. The "Cave" would have been better in my mind if there was more of a blue balance to denote the ice. The procedure to make the material is fascinating and this video answers that question that I've had for some time. I was going to order one of his pens at one time except the waiting period is just too long for me, but for those with more patience I'm sure it's worth it. Great video David and Jonathan.
He is a master at catching the molds as they pop out of the silicoln. Plenty of other skills on show too 😁 I like the cave pen: it is at the point where the white drags across the barrel it is attractive
I have been in awe of these pens ever since seeing them three years ago at SF Pen Show. His pens are usually gone on first day so last couple of years I haven't had any luck at pen show. I decided to order from his website but have never heard back whether order was received or not. I know he is extremely busy and there is a long lead time.
Fascinating! Thanks for making this video. Have you done a review of the various pen "kits" (I think that's the term for the inky parts - nib, feed, internals)? It's hard to know which are good quality and which are not.
