Making Dolls' House Furniture - Tips for Working with Wood 

The wood I mention in the video as being one of my favourites, is called Obeche.

Great video! I'm a plastic scale modeller of many decades (🥺)! My wife is heavily into doll's houses and has recruited me to assist with the furniture. I'm no DIYer but for some reason I'm not too bad at miniatures. It's been about ten years since I last made things out of wood so this refresher is invaluable! Thanks for the upload.

I have been making dollhouse furniture for 20 years. As careful as I have been, I never realized that cutting on the side of the pencil mark makes a difference. Cutting corners against the grain first, knowing that the thickness of the blade affects the size of each cut, using a scrap piece of wood when the ruler is larger than the piece...and the many tips you showed will make my pieces much easier to build without all the sanding I've had to do. You are truly a "Master of Building Dollhouse Furniture". I am purchasing both your books on Amazon and I am following your tutorial for the "Welsh Dresser". Thank You for your generous sharing of you talents.

I followed your tutorials to make two dollhouse beds and just ordered more supplies to make your kitchen sink tutorial. I am a first timer and you are so very easy to follow. Thank you, Julie, for suggesting that I watch this video, there was a lot of good information here. When I started making dollhouse furniture, I was probably about 12 or 13 years old, and all I used was balsa wood, probably because it was cheap for my parents to buy, and soft enough for it to be cut fairly safely. It was the only wood I ever knew for furniture making if I hadn't watched your video first, I probably would have just gone for balsa from history without considering other options. Through the use of things such as copper tape, by the time I was married, my dollhouse had developed to be fully decorated, with electricity, lighting, and even a working radio and fireplace. It was far from perfect, but I thought it was pretty good for a kid who had no one to help her because no adults in her life had no interest in dollhouses, and the internet was not accessible back then, not just yet, it was just around the corner. I was probably 19 or 20 when we moved out of our first apartment, with our first child, and my husband and his friends accidentally dropped it down four flights of stairs, and it was rubble at the bottom. Knowing what I know now, if I had used a wood that was a bit harder, maybe it would have survived the fall better. I grieved as if I had lost a friend. My husband promised me a new one, but with a new baby, in the middle of a new move, and both of us just starting out, with money being tight, I knew we had neither the money to spare, and I did not have the time to devote, because 6 more children came after, and thirty years passed. Now I am at a point in my life where only the two youngest are left, and they are 17 and 15, old enough to stay out of things and not touch, and I have found myself spending many hours over the past six months or so watching hundreds of dollhouse and furniture videos. My husband has not forgotten his promise to me all these years, it's a matter of making a place to work, and getting my mind made up. We homeschooled all our children, and have a small room that for over two decades collected many books, microscopes, letter tiles, and craft supplies. But the truth is, I haven't seen a child touch a thing in that room in the past year or two, everyone likes to do things online now. Well, of course, they use the craft stuff, but the books are just obsolete, we don't need all the curriculum and things that we needed when we began to homeschool. The girls and I have been cleaning the room out a box at a time, to the library, or local thrift, or whatever. That room is being repurposed to be my doll and dollhouse room. So, in the meantime, I watch videos, because I have no room to work, and have literally no idea what craft supplies I even have at this moment. But I dream...

Dear Julie, I've never seen your channel before and I'm very glad that I found it. I've just subscribed and liked, and I loved your video tutorial on making miniatures with wood. It can be very confusing to know what type of wood to use. The one I use is basswood because it's easy to find in different thicknesses. I bought a pair of mitre shears and they're great for cutting popsicle sticks as well as narrow lengths of basswood cornicing on a 45 degree angle to make miniature frames. What do you think of jewellers saws for cutting through basswood, or would you recommend something else? Thanks again. Cheers from Amanda Jones in Melbourne, Australia ❤

11:45 I’ve also found out that if you cut other pieces of wood using your previous one you may end up cutting the pieces bigger.

Hi Julie! I'm in the UK and wondered, is Basswood the same as Balsawood? Also, can all 4 of the woods you've named be used on a Cricut Maker (I'm thinking of buying one)? Obviously thickness matters.

Thank you for this great video, but could you possibly list all the terms you mention down in the description, so we can search them out knowing the correct spelling. Eg. Abesh, Janka rating etc. Most of these items I've never heard of here in little old New Zealand. About the only thing I see here in craft/hobby shops is Balsawood.

Where do you order your wood sheets from?

When I have to cut really small pieces I use an emery board instead of a ruler as it grips the wood and stops slipping.

I have a question; I have some wood that bends (along the grain) but I don’t know its technical name to be able to search for it when I need to buy more. Just to describe it better, it is like one that is used on wooden roll top bread bins. You might know the name, any idea?
