I love making these ornaments, for decorating and for gifting! I hope you enjoy!
EDIT: I'm delighted (if a little shocked!!) at how popular this video seems to be!! As a result I'd like to draw attention to a couple of things:
🌟(1) the type of glitter I'm using here is German Glass Glitter / Vintage glass glitter from Save-On-Crafts; the size is Size 0.60-1.00mm. There is a link below to the exact product.
🌟(2) REAL glass glitter (which this is...) can be very sharp: use caution when handling, especially around CHILDREN and PETS. I personally vacuum aggressively to protect my cats from ingesting glass accidentally. Use at your own risk!!
🌟(3) It has been suggested that sealing a finished glass-glitter craft with hairspray, a clear spray sealant, or even mod-podge can help decrease the potential for glitter shedding from the ornaments.
Thank you for all of your wonderful comments and suggestions -- enjoy! ❤

Beautiful. But glass, being dangerous to children and animals (pets), I would recommend spraying finished product with a clear sealing spray. Keep any glass crystals from getting into little folk's fingers or pet's tummies etc. Just the advice from a glass artist :) Otherwise - your works are wonderful.

Thank you so much for your comment! I really appreciate the suggestion and I'm going to pin it so that others can see and consider. I think I'll spray mine before putting them away for the season. I've been amazed at how little they do seem to shed... but of course some still happens so it's nice to know there's a way to make them safer!

@@wrenhavenhouseandgarden Your welcome - one artist to another :) Also, saw you have some beautiful cats - will help keep them safe too. I would not want any of my 3 tiger babies to ingest any glass :)

Keeping cats safe during the holidays is a full time job haha! Candles, ornaments, ribbons... things can get wild for sure! I'm fortunate that none of mine are tree climbers, so once things are hung on the tree they don't get bashed around too much and there is very little fall out - but I still vacuum daily just in case!

Glass glitter has a bright sparkle no other material can match. Glass glitter was used for hundreds (thousands) of years before the plastic variety appeared in the 1930's. The type of glass typically used for the glitter (soft) means the grinding process results primarily in tiny nuggets of glass instead of sharp shards. That is why it is safer to touch than ordinary broken glass. There are still some sharp tiny pieces of glass in glass glitter, so it is wise to be cautious while using the material, and to carefully shake off the excess glitter before displaying a finished item. Sealing the crafted piece after glue has thoroughly dried with a spray on sealant will help secure the glitter against shedding.
@wrenhavenhouseandgarden
@wrenhavenhouseandgarden 7 месяцев назад
Thank you for this fantastic comment! Sealing definitely is the right choice for some people and can definitely help with shedding if thats a concern and it's a good thing to consider when crafting with Glitter Glass! ♥️

Hello, what a fun craft! I will have to try this with some of the cones in my collection sometime. As a forester and arborist, I just wanted to share some information about your cone species. The first cones you glittered were from spruce trees, they looked like Norway spruce cones. The ones you referred to as sugar cones are from pine trees but they are not from sugar pines, those cones are 12-24” long and do not have a prickle on the scale. The first ones looked kind of like ponderosa or Austrian pines but it’s hard to tell from a video and not in person or without a location for where the cones were foraged or their origin. Anyway just wanted to share some tree info because I’m a crafty tree nerd like that 😅
@wrenhavenhouseandgarden
@wrenhavenhouseandgarden Год назад
Tara you must have some amazing cones!! I now realize I have a LOT to learn about conifers haha, I hope I didn't make you cringe too hard! 😂 Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! The long skinny ones came from a tree in my yard - it's very tall (~80ft) w/long arching branches and stiff short needles. Someone asked me what kind they were and my best guess was spruce, so I'm glad to know I might have been close. The smaller of the short/fat ones I misidentified came from trees on my parents' estate that were shorter with long soft needles, what I would call more like a white pine. These trees are all currently growing in NY state... BUT, I will say that we are not far from a huge arboretum with a massive collection of pines from all different parts of the world, so who the heck knows what kinds of seeds/pine nuts are being distributed by the birds around here!! The largest ones I had in the video, unfortunately I don't remember what the tree was like that those came from. I'll be paying more attention in the future though!
@juliapendergast5253
@juliapendergast5253 7 месяцев назад
Thanks, we have pines down here in Louisiana but not as pretty as the long ones in this video. Will these open any further, i think it would spoil the effect if so.
@treesandbugs
@treesandbugs 7 месяцев назад
@@juliapendergast5253 it looks like the cones are fully opened, so no worries. If you are ever concerned about that happening with freshly picked cones, you can dry them in the oven on a low temperature for a while to help them open and to shed any seeds or other debris.

My mom collects the blue plates you are using here. She has one each year since the late 70s. I won't forget to seal seal seal! I did watch a designer this year take her local foraged long cones and use liberally in her design. The tip I received from her was to prep them by a low heat bake. Killing off critters of course, but to also stunt the weeping of the pine sap. She used cookie sheets and her oven. (Rebecca Robison of Kin Woven Design in case you want to catch it. Her Christmas content is sublime). While her natural effect was lovely, YOURS TOPS HERS! It is just that extra somethin' somethin' that brings the magic. Thanks again! Muwah! 😘

Hi!! First, these are STUNNING!! I literally just found your channel, I wish I had seen it before Christmas.. however, this already gives me a headstart in something to do w my kiddos for the upcoming Christmas Season. My oldest is 11 and he is really into pinecone decorations. I am also a homeschool Mommy, so these can count for class work for him. So excited to share in your adventures, to learn and create. May your New Year be Blessed.

Hi Stephanie, thanks for commenting! I had no idea this video would be so popular but I'm happy to hear lots of people say it's inspiring them for next year's projects! Take note that the glitter can be very sharp as it is literally finely crushed glass, this is why I handle it with the spoon in the video. Others have also suggested sealing the pinecones after they are dry with a clear spray (such as the one Mod Modge makes). Have fun crafting and welcome to the channel! ❤️

That's great! You may want to clean/treat them before using, especially if you're not sure where they came from...there are some great ideas here in the comments section. I also use my dehydrator to make sure they are super dry before crafting! Enjoy!

My grandmother made these but she painted them different colors like red,blue,yellow,etc. I’m 63 and still have two large ones for display. They can last for years if carefully stored.

Thanks for commenting, they sound beautiful! Agreed, most of mine are several years old; the only new cones I made this year are those I made in this video. I wrap them in tissue paper and store in gallon ziplock bags in my Christmas totes and they've done just fine!

I've never liked using glitter because it never seems to end...you know, the way it just seems to pop up EVERY where, WEEKS after you put every glittery thing away?🤷🏻‍♀️😄 BUT this might make me change my ways, because it's absolutely GORGEOUS! ❤🤗❤🤗❤ I've never even heard of this kind of glitter, so thank you for introducing me to a beautiful new crafting item. And I do have cats, so I will be extra careful with it, and also use a sealer.😺

Oh I definitely do know!! 😂😂 I bought wrapping paper with that plastic glitter on it one year and I was pretty sure I might have to buy new rugs after that one, I swear I was still finding it in June! 😂 This glitter thankfully behaves very differently in my experience. My vacuum is definitely my best friend this time of year! 🐈‍⬛ Happy crafting!

Very pretty and a very nice tree. Christmas is over and being born German but now Swiss, I have old glass ornaments for my tree but I will try to do some pine cones next year if Amazon Spain has similar 'Geerman Glass Glitter' (never heard of that when I did live in Germany, btw.
