it is always a big pleasure seeing you work. these videos are so relaxing to watch with the music going on and your preciseness using the files. keep it up! it would be interesting as well to see some other projects that aren't knives, maybe building something entirely from wood like a chest or bow
It is a very different trade making something from wood like a chest or bow. I would have to invest money into wood working tools which I don't have. Maybe when I have a bigger place that could be a possibility.
Sometimes the best workshops are not those that have latest model machines, which are huge, or have a large number of people behind. The best workshops are those that have a great heart, and also that know how to do great jobs with little space or with few things. You, Mr. Tely, leave me a great lesson, that with little you can do much. Thanks SLAVIK TELY.
Mr Tely. You are an inspiration to me. I always thought knife making was out of my range until I saw your videos a year ago. I have since made three knives and slowly buying more tools to make the job easier. They're not to your standard but each one is better than the last. Thank you sir.
Couldn’t be more happy! You sir are a master of your trade. I hope you can start doing this full time so we can get some more knives going. Great steel!! Thank you again!! ~Falk
I don`t know if it`s the music to see you`r working or possibily both, but generates a relaxation to see your videos amazing, thank`s for your videos my friend, great work
Slavik, i tried to find your kiridashi knife template on your google plus but couldn't. Is the template on there or did you just decide to not post it? Thanks
Dave Erving Evader Knives what do you mean by too many imperfections to sell it? These knives were sold before he even made them. He replied to a comment saying so
As Dave said, most of my knives are sold. There are knives that I will not sell because the quality of the build does not represent the quality I put out right now. I am sure that one year from now I will look back and see more of my imperfections in the knives I have made. But at this moment, I am still learning. There are some knives I make only for the RU-vid videos to get the views.
Hello Slavik. I am totally impressed by the quality of your work. Love the way you still use the good old hand files for the delicate work. Your level of craftsmanship is an isspiration for me as a hobbyist knifemaker. Keep them videos coming and don't mind the haters!
I wanted to give you some advice for cleanup techniques when you are making the holes in the handles have a vacuum already on the top of it to clean up extra metal particles falling off
Yes, heat treat and temper. Heat treatment of stainless steels is a bit more complex and more difficult for the average do-it-yourself...er. Its much more cost effective to have it done professionally if you aren't producing enough knives to invest in being able to do the process at home.
Hi Tely, first of all i love your work. I wanted to ask you, why did you not treat the steel yourself this time? What changed? Keep up the good work. Another thing, I would like to see you doing the knife which carol use in the walking dead the one with the knuckle grip. Thx
Hi Mark, as River run Knives stated, stainless steel is air quenched not oil quenched. Also, it requires a different complex process to heat treat stainless.
Great job, like always. I watched alot of different youtube knife making video's on knife making and yours video's are one of the best. You have a lot af passion and the metal working skills are amazing and you take the time in your video's, to show and teach us how to make our own knifes. That alone is incredible and amazing. When I got sick' form a staft infection given to me by a doctor using a needle. I watched your video's and learned how to make my own knife. I learned that if you have to take your time you can make knifes just as beautiful as your knifes. Thank you for taking the time and showing us how you make your knifes and teaching us some tips. Your the first site I found worthy of subscribing too.
Thank you Vyran. I hope you feel better. I stay away from doctors unless it is something I can't fix...broken bones, internal organs. Other than that you can heal your body yourself.
can you please tell how thick edge should be left before quenching these knives so that edge will not warp. I didn't find any exact information about that. I warp my edge and broke my kukri in half during quenching.
I usually leave about 1 mm thick before the quench. If you are really good with belt grinder then leave thicker edge. Also, you need to heat up your oil to 140-150 degrees F before quenching your knife.
I usually leave about 1mm thick edge before the heat treat. If you don't have a belt grinder then use a 4 inch disk grinder and slowly grind the edge. It will not look pretty ...be careful.
Slavik tely. I would love an answer back much appreciated what kind of steel are you using for these two beautiful knives and what's the thickness. Much appreciate an answer thanks!!!!! Amazing knives by the way even if there not forged you worked hard on them and there gorgeous
and by the way, to me you are a true inspiration. thank you so much for your videos and keep up the amazing work! Your tanto kukri is out of this world!
I have seen Nick Wheeler use Dewalt bandsaw and it seems to be way more simpler to attach to the wall and to mound a table on to it. If I could go back I think I would buy Dewalt. Check his instagram page. He posted pictures of his setup....you might have to scroll down for a few minutes.
What kind of blade are you using on the bandsaw to cut the steel? Much better than using an angle grinder I would think. Absolutely beautiful by the way!
i am from australia and would like to get started in knifemaking- stock removal. do you have any tips or tricks or just basic advice that would help me get started in making my first knife?
Those are some stunning bevels ground with your 2x42 Craftsman grinder!! I have the same grinder and can't even do that good with a jig, and work rest. I also like how you used that hand-filing jig to grind the false edge in - I am going to try that. Getting read to watch part two now. Thanks for posting this!
It's also called a swedge. It's the edge on the top of the blade, that looks like another cutting bevel, but it's not sharpened and it lightens the blade a bit and looks really cool!
$ 50 each? I would like to buy them $75 each for a pair! $150 each, right? After watching part 2, I wouldn’t be surprised if you told me this was $200 each. They were amazing.
They were totally worth it, I am sorry I severely undervalued your work. They were all work of arts. Blaming that guy said $ 50 each misleading me. LOL Sorry. But thank you to bring up such great vids to us, big fan here.
I heard you on the Dave Ramsey show on the radio. I was like " I know who that is! I sub to his RU-vid channel!" Keep up the good work. And way to go telling those trolls off!
In a well made sword balance is achieved when the center of its weight is just above the handle at the base of the blade. In larger knives this is still a factor. In smaller blades, it's simply the lighter the better.
@slavik tely Excuse my ignorance, but I would like to know the name of the materials (black and white) I think it is plastic, which uses to make the handle for the knives
Freyr Hreinsson it is pretty much impossible to harden stainless at home, since you need specialty tools, but there are tons of heat treatment businesses that you can send it to who will harden it to any HRC you want, and it doesn't cost much at all.Hope this helped.
Unless you know someone you will be paying around $140 for heat treat. Try making a knife from carbon steels 1080, 1075, 5160 or O1 Tool steel. you can heat treat them at home and quench them in oil.
Hey tely haw are you? I whrite from italy, sorry for terribile inglish i whrite. The macchine for cat the steel are a macchine for Wood with blade for steel? Can i ask you the name and the brand of tis machines? Tanks for your grate job and for your Amazing video!!!
You've got a problem with your belt grinder, sounds like a bearing has gone deep South !!! that can lead to complete failure of the machine. or cause a major repairs to what was a simple fix. good luck with the knife MFG biz. Be safe.......
SLAVIK TELY really ?? Most things can be fixed, but does repair cost more than a new machine. I've been looking at grinders/belt sanders myself. Seems there's cheap junk & massively expensive ones but no real happy medium priced machines. So I'm looking into making my own. Again be safe out there & take care.
