Papillon- The Brew Garden is an outdoor brew garden/ outdoor cafe designed by Ar. Samruddhi S Chaphale, Principal Architect at Sam's Drafting Board in Nagpur.
Situated near Nagpur Airport, this property is designed at a 10000 sq.ft. open plot which meant it could have become any design. However, the architect has a deeper understanding of what to offer through this project and went on to design very organically drawing inspiration from natural forms and created this lush green garden cafe in the shape of a butterfly not just physically but through the various experiences that this place has to offer. The name of the cafe Papillon meaning a French Butterfly, thus emerged as the place has this free spirit and form of a butterfly and offers beautiful surprises through its design. Here, sensitivity in design played a key role. When we talk about the concept of Papillon, which is a French butterfly, it evolved because of these lines. I was given an empty box shaped site, with which I could have had any possibility to work around with. But since I follow my heart and hence those lines, levels, form development, transitions, negative - positive balance created a language that spoke for itself. The roof design is my version of half wing of a butterfly.

The meandering, wooden pergola walkway leads one to Papillon- The Brew Garden. Outlined with tall shrubs one is welcomed by this beautiful organically designed wooden pergola with cobbles and stone textures along its pathway that make the perfect recipe for earthiness. This pergola walkway takes you on a muted tour and allows you to soak up the design and experience it in its truest form. As one passes through it, besides plantation at abundance you'll first come across a butterfly shaped bench near a natural fountain which also marks for a perfect selfie point! Later as the path unwinds one begins to explore little by little what this place has to offer and that's the beauty of it!
Further as you go, the organic lines meet the furniture and landscape design to form this curved shaped garden seating that hugs a circular AC room structure in the middle. The organic flow of the lines is not only seen in its planning but the profile of wood of the bench, to the plantation and the structure of the set - up! The yellow and green metal chairs bring in the dash of color just like a butterfly popping in nature.
While the plan form is already organic, this vibrant tukdi fashion sunken court is the sweet spot of the property. I decided to create a sunken court right there which depicts the vibrancy of the butterfly such that it draws your attention. This space is undefined for a reason, to express the free-spirited butterfly.
One of the innovative construction technologies was the introduction of waste glass bottles to create full size curved profile walls. This not only added a 3D dimension to the space, but also a sense of purpose and added definition to the project that is designed around the aspects of a butterfly. As the butterfly luminates and has pop of color, here the play of light through glass bottles creates varied colors making the whole space look more elegant and blended.
The AC room is a circular shaped room that bursts with creativity. Its circular form with lemon burst ceiling brings in the glow. The butterfly art work wall is just too beautiful to describe. The floral diagrammatic flooring keeps up with the continuity of the circular pattern and adds to the natural elements that this space has to offer. The glass bottle recycled wall adds character to the space and also creates beautiful light and shadow tinted pattern as per the sun path. The curve shaped glass wall allows for inside and outside seemless connectivity.The furniture is a blend of cane and pastel shades that adds to the cuteness of the space. Even the tables are designed following the profile of the space. The high table ledge seating around the central column marks for a perfect reading space.
The long table seating is a good 16-20 seater high table sit-out at a strategic corner of the property that is secluded yet blends in so well that it gets its privacy and as well an exchange with the overall property.
The table is a long organic shape wooden top that is planned around the existing trees. The cane furniture makes the design lighter. Beautiful boho style hanging lights adorn this space. The tukdi flooring with white cement irregular joints adds in the character. What's even better is this informal setting is next to a colorful sunken court which can be used in multiple ways, one being an extension to the long table seating area. So, if you are a big group, this space is the one for you :)
