making friends when I love to be alone - how I find connection
I wanted to make a video adding on to one I made a couple months ago about friendship. It seemed to resonate with a lot of people, so I thought I'd make a little video celebrating unconventional friendships. Nature is such an enormous source of peace for me, it is one of the reasons I love to make these videos: it helps me support my local conservation programs and fund the planting of trees (I always link charities down below that I love to work with). This is a short video this week but I hope you enjoy it, sending much love

I'm exactly that way. My ladyfriend, Phyllis, always said it was weird that I did not have several guy friends to hang out with. Not interested, really, in partying or gathering with others, always managed being alone, and it never has really gotten "old".

Thank you for sharing. I now feel it's okay to be alone and enjoy it, too . I am 32, married with a toddler. I don't like socializing much as my friends and relative don't understand my mental zone and I can't cope with theirs. I felt anxious, I might endup alone when old and my child will be an introvert. But i love my wife and child's company. Thats enough.

That was me throughout high school. I felt anxious at the thought of being noticeably different, and that was, to me, being quiet and alone. Out of fear, I prioritised just hanging around people-even if they weren’t good people, and oftentimes, they weren’t-rather than trying to find and surrounding myself with persons of value/like-minded individuals. This is evident by the fact that I don’t speak to a single “friend” I made in high school. Partly because I knew they weren’t good for my life, but also because they didn’t care for me enough to try and keep in contact. I wished I hadn’t feared being without people around me. I wish I was comfortable in my self and in being alone like I am now-I rather revel in it now.

When I was a small, I would frequently disappear at social gatherings to wherever the family critters had curled up away from the bustling activity for a cozy, quiet snooze. We’d cuddle together for long swaths of time, enjoying our little slice of peace. My two cat boys have become great friends, and I love the many ways they communicate with me. Owls, chickadees, squirrels, foxes, coyotes… I’d like to have more human friends, but I’m gradually making peace with the fact that all relationships are valuable and worthy of being cherished, and that for me personally, the number of human friends I have is not a helpful measure of a successful life. Thank you for your videos on this subject, Paola! They help me feel a bit less alien! 🌸

This video came at the exact right time for me. I have been feeling insecure for not having a large number of close friends and struggling to connect with people on a deeper level. You're right that it is "normal" to not be an overly social person and to not have large numbers of human connections. I think embracing our natural tendencies can leave us more open to connection than shaming ourselves for not being as social as those around us.

I have been feeling the same recently. I'm quite ashamed of not having large friend groups and the 2 friends that I have they're quite of an introvert themselves. Sometimes I wish I had such outgoing fun friends but I never attract such friends unfortunately. I've been feeling quite shitty about it too. I'm someone who usually enjoys her alone time but sometimes I love to socialise and go out and enjoy, obviously with people I'm comfortable with.

I have zero in-life, day to day friends. Left my husband of 35+ years almost seven months ago. I believe I will be alone until my dying day. I have to be okay with that. No dating apps for me. No bending over backwards trying to make connections that no one seems to want. I appreciate honesty. And others who recognize the ok-ness of being alone. Friendless. And let me say, animals are the best friends anyway. ~Peace~ 🌿🕊💕🌍

I love to be alone as well, but when I began living alone recently, I tried to be a little more social and tried to make friends and I did manage to live that kind of life for a while, but I found myself realizing the very same thing: people claim they want connections with others, but that didn't really seem to be the case. So out of all the people I met and became close with for a short time, I have no one left and I am fine with that. I'm back to being alone and I too believe I will be alone until my dying day and I'm fine with that as well. Trying to make connections with people seemed to take a lot of time and energy and all of it amounted to nothing in the end, so I would rather spend my time with animals and engaging in hobbies and living a peaceful life by myself ❤

Sending hugs to each of you. It's comforting to hear I am not alone in my aloneness yet a bit perplexing as well. We ALL have so much to offer, as ourselves, authentic and real, love, laughs, our time, yet not finding it with others around us. Somehow the world has closed us off, or perhaps hurt us so deeply that trying-again isn't something many want to do anymore. (?) Not speaking for us here but as a whole. A society. Do you think it's the internet? Less outside stimulation? It's puzzling. I do love my own quiet time, my own schedule, etc. But someone to share some new experiences with is welcome too. Being creative, fun and joyful is something I always strive for. And of course gratitude for another day. ~Peace and Love~ 🌿🕊💕🌍

I used to hide away in high school in a old stairwell during my lunch period. These steps were not used very often. I would sit on the top step and read while eating my lunch. I did this for quite a while till one day a teacher discovered me there. She wanted to tell me to go to the cafeteria but instead stopped herself and told me I could sit there. I was surprised and relieved. I will always remember her for allowing me to sit there. I just needed that quiet time during the day and I really feel that made my school year more bearable. A couple of decades ago, Hollywood brought a slew of comedies to television that showed groups of people bonding, socializing & supporting one another. Taxi, Cheers, Friends, Golden Girls, Big Bang Theory glorified & romanticized multiple personalities forming lasting friendships. As an introvert, it left me feeling out in the cold. I’ve never had many friends, but the few I’ve had in life have been good ones. I can’t do shallow casual acquaintances. I’ve always preferred animals, especially dogs, they have been some of my most deep & trusting relationships. I used to feel a bit insecure, but with age my confidence grew, especially after I finally retired & didn’t have to be a people pleaser anymore x

I have said this many times to my friends - while the pandemic has been devastating in many ways, it has been a blessing too. I’ve slowed my life down and reassessed. I have never been one to be bothered by spending time alone as, like you, I’m artistic in a sense. My grandmother taught me the art of knitting and crocheting and I’ve spent many hours listening to music or the clock ticking while crocheting. I have friends and family but I also love my alone time. Thank you

So many people I know feel so confused when I tell them that I am content in my loneliness. I tell them, “I am alone, but I do not feel alone.” They do not understand that I find absolute peace in solitude. I do enjoy socializing, but when I am at home, I am in a sacred space for myself. I understand that not everyone feels this way, but the concept of introversion ought to be respected instead of rejected. It is not a terrible thing.

As a (relatively) recently diagnosed autistic adult, and very recently becoming to accept it and learning to unmask, I now realise how much of an introvert I am and am becoming more comfortable with saying I like being alone. I felt wrong as a child that I never wanted to play with the neighbouring kids and felt happier playing alone, like a square peg being made to try and fit in a round hole! I now work in a shop and the few hours of that is enough social for me. It is surprising how many people out there are introverts. I haven’t ever thought of deriving connection and friendship in unconventional ways, I really like that. Thank you for sharing your wise words again Paola.

Hi Paola. I watch all your videos as soon as they come out. I rarely comment. But I want to say that even though I follow many YT makers I don’t watch their content as soon as it hits. I mostly use the platform to listen to music or audiobooks, lectures, look at dance, architecture and art. The reason I watch your vids is I relate to your tales of your life in the world you know other than human interaction. They’re mostly reflections and expressions of all kinds of wondering. As a deaf person raised outside the deaf community who went to normal school my life has remained as inexplicable to me as it has always been to the people around me. Because of course my interactions and perceptions are so different. I can relate well to your videos of living through a lens that so many others have no access to. Thanks for giving us a glimpse behind yours. ☺️

I've just come across this channel and very glad to know that I am not alone. Many of the comments here are actually description of me too. I am shy but of cheerful nature and like positivity in life. It's not guilt or weird as such but more like embarrassment, to say I do not have friends (apart from one but she passed away). To be honest, this isn't a choice I'd have, I like the balance of me time but also some interactions with humans, not superficially but deeper honest friendships. I live in the UK with my husband and my grown up children (I am in my mid 50s), I love my family dearly, however, I can honestly say I still have room in my heart to add new women friends so I keep hoping. I long for the joy of good honest friendship and sharing mutual interest.

When I was in middle school I used to eat lunch on the library steps reading a book. School was exhausting and I needed some decompression time in the world of a good book. My parents were called by my teachers, with great concern, that I wasn't socializing at lunch, and my parents gave me the assignment of trying to socialize with a different classmate every lunch period. I made several attempts to make lunch dates (students ate in circles that changed locations, so arrangements had to be made in advance where to meet) and was stood up by several. I eventually gave up the project. What a cruel thing to do to an introverted kid.

Teachers who accepted me as I was as a child and nurtured my uniqueness were rare, and they are the few Teachers that I remember fondly more than half a century later. The other teachers who wanted me to conform, I have completely forgotten about. I loved books as a child, I still love books as an elderly man. I loved learning as a child. I still love to learn as an elderly man. Your Channel, Paola, is a delightful and beautiful and very welcome breath of fresh perspective and insight and wisdom. Thank you one more time for this beautiful vlog... I used to be a flight attendant for 30 years. I had a very active social life at this time. I was also dancing in a small local dance club and had many friends and I dedicated a lot of my free time to this activity, preparing end of the year shows etc... Now, I am retired and since the covid sanitary crisis, I realised I am now in deep need of nature, slow and quiet life. My old friends don't understand the changes I operated in my life. Now, I love (and need) to walk alone in the country side, paint outside, read books, poetry, I love to write... The way you live resonate a lot with the way I decides to live now... Most days I would rather paint, write or read then be in the company of others. I also love the peaceful healing that nature brings living in a rural area. I have recently made some new friends as I like to feed the hummingbirds from my balcony and watch the butterflies amongst the flowers. Even family can make you feel odd but I would never want to lose that total peace and contentment I feel in my own company. I have traveled with people and I've traveled alone and I prefer traveling alone. I never really feel alone because I do feel God taking care of me. Thanks for sharing this insightful video, Paola. I am an introvert and enjoy solitude. Some people find it difficult to be alone and enjoy their own company. Because of this, it’s difficult for them to understand the love of solitude. In my youth, I struggled bc I enjoyed solitude and loved r effective activities. I often thought there was something wrong with me, but at 67, I absolutely understand and know that I am more than ok. A red flag in possible friendships is that scary comment, “ I do not like being alone”. I find these people to be high maintenance bc they want me to be with them constantly so that they don’t have to be alone…..sad

This video was such an exquisite work of art, Paola. The out in nature scenes at the opening were magnificent. And then, inside your beautiful cottage with your beautiful friends ( books) and candle, all glowed and invited each of us in to share your thoughts on friendship. It truly felt like an invitation on a Winter’s day, to quietly join you. Friendships come in all different forms. I’ve learned over the years to accept the big part of myself that so enjoys my need for solitude and to appreciate my own uniqueness in not being one with the interest, desire or ability to easily make small talk or need to have many friends. To be one’s own best friend is an art and skill that incredibly enriches one’s life. To me, it is the ultimate in living with joy and freedom, and developing a few exquisite friendships from a place of fullness, rather than emptiness and neediness. The fullness of one’s being enables one to truly express and live accordingly a life of self love and acceptance ( which I’ve learned over time) and sense of self completeness. It allows one to relax and truly give lovingkindness from a happy heart and appreciate the few and very precious friends that we find, and who find us. You might be very surprised to know how many of us are likeminded and relate to your being one who dances to your own music, and not to society’s noise…

I happen to be quite a social person and have many friends, but only 2 that I know I could count on no matter what. I feel blessed to have those two "sisters" as I know they are the rare kind of friend that most people can't find. Also, I had a counselor tell me once (we were talking about my shy son) that it doesn't matter so much that he has many friends, but it does matter that he has at least one friend. Also, was thinking of something that Beethoven once was supposed to have said in answer to a question......"I am alone most of the time, but, because of the music, I am never lonely." You have art and nature and your husband and family. You are blessed.
