Moving on with our terrain tutorials for the Doctor Who: Exterminate! Miniatures Game, we have two more pieces to add to our Skaro table.
The first is from the 12th Doctor episodes "The Magician's Apprentice" and "The Witch's Familiar," and that is the deadly handmine field.
Going back to the 4th Doctor, we have the stone ruins that Sarah Jane picks her way through on the way to discover Davros and the first Dalek weapons text.
As always these can be used for any number of fantasy, sci-fi, horror or post-apocalyptic game systems or settings.
Tools and materials used were:
Hardboard
Spackle
Coarse sand
Playground sand
Plastic zombie model hands
Two part epoxy putty (green stuff)
Foamboard
Jigsaw
Dremel
X-acto knife
Super glue
White Glue
Cheap craft paints
Water effects
Matt spray varnish
Let me know if you have any questions, observations or concerns.
The music used was "Doctor Who Transmutation Mix" by One Man Tribe.

I love the "handmine" terrain! What a great idea for Frostgrave or some chaosy goodness!

Thanks. Originally I was going to make more of it, but I started running a bit low on my zombie hand supply.

I saw this picture in my feed and it got me inspired to make a spell effect for Frostgrave. Necromacers can cast a spell of gripping hands which immobilises the target and forces they to waste time fighting to get free.

Good idea!

Nice build. The washes and weathering really worked very well here.

Thanks. I found another pile of zombie hands in my bits box that I didn’t know I had, so eventually I’ll probably make another one of these.

I might steal the hand idea for some fantasy horror terrain

It made for a creepy start to the episode, so sounds good.

This has nothing to do with this current video but I am really interested in how you made your gremlins from your 2017 display. Let me know if you are willing to share how it was done. Thank you it was rad!

Thanks. It was a pretty elaborate process, though. First I sculpted the body parts in clay. I made six sculpts: left arm, right arm, body, face/ears, left leg and right leg. The body was sculpted around a pvc pipe stand, the rest were on a board so had one flat side. I then made molds of the pieces out of this more expensive plaster stuff. The body was the only two piece mold. I removed all the clay, coated the inside with Vaseline. The body mold was bound with those truck load ties, the limbs were bound in the same way but with a spare board on the flat side. I poured in liquid latex and sloshed it around inside the mold. I let it cure for a while, then poured out most of it. I then pointed a hair dryer into the mold for a long time. Seriously, I set hair dryers up blowing into a mold for several hours. I then poured in more latex and repeated the process a couple times. The face didn’t need to be sealed and I could just apply coats and let it dry. After all that I would untie the molds and peel out the liquid latex casts. I made basic frame skeletons out of pvc pipe connected with bailing wire. I dressed them in the latex and attached the skin arms and legs to the body skin with little twists of wire. The face was attached to an upside down dollar store styrofoam pumpkin and stuck on the pvc frame. The whole thing was spray painted green and then further painted with regular craft acrylics. So there it is. None of this is exactly professional grade, but it was a lot more ambitious than many of my other projects. Let me know if you have any questions.

This was very helpful. I had considered making molds with silicone but I have a feeling I would make a mess so I am going to first try to use foam to carve out the body pieces and see how that goes. Hard to find these little dudes. Take care.

Thanks, and good luck. I tried carving in foam for The Hulk in the Avengers Halloween and I found it very difficult. For anything I don’t have to make in bulk the most convenient sculpting material for me is usually paper mache.
