I was asked by a friend to make coasters sometime on the channel and figured this would be a good opportunity. I don't like making coasters that have to go into a little box as the Box itself serves little Point other than holding the coasters, and that seems counterproductive. I wanted to make some coasters that would hold themselves together but still look like just a stack of coasters. The idea of using interlocking pins came to mind and the idea for these coasters was born. Originally I was asked to make them out of Walnut and Maple but as that combination is little overused and I much prefer using white oak, I decided to make them out of Walnut and white oak.

Great video. It's fun to see your kids in the shop with you. I have made coasters to high school graduates with a note that says "Work hard. Don't be a coaster". Since I give one coaster to each person, the coasters don't have to match each other.

Wow.. all kinds of respect for doing this with no electricity.. I don't have the patience or time to do this all by hand.. I'll stick to bandsaws, planers, and sanders but what you did with "old school" traditional woodwork was amazing.

What is very interesting is that everything was done by hand tools...I think you make it look easy but all those long saw cuts, especially that resaw perfectly down the middle, must take a lot of skill and experience !

Thanks. Not as much skill as you expect as long at the tool is setup well. Thanks Man!

hand jointing is definitely not easier or faster, but it is quieter, less dusty, and more enjoyable, if you like that kind of work.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
LL depends on what you are comparing it too. setting up a joiner then running them can take more time the couple quick strokes with a plane. no setup needed. but if you have a really nice joiner you trust and leave it set up for edge jointing then it might be faster.
@mikesmicroshop4385
@mikesmicroshop4385 6 лет назад
My Joiner is always set up so all I have to do is turn it on and swipe, it tasks less time to do that than to clamp the board in the vice grab the plane out off of the tool wall then plane the edge. By the time I have done that I could have edge jointed two or three boards. It is not usually a question of speed as there have been many head to head duels and in every case the hand tools loose unless it is just a board or two then they have a small edge. I have participated in everything from edge jointing, flattening, planing to thickness, dovetails, finger joints, mortising. cutting tenons, and re-sawing! Hand tools are just slower there is no way around it. In a few cases like I said if you have just a board or two to joint, or one drawer to dove tail then the hand tools are neck and neck but in all other cases every test I have run with different experienced hand tool woodworkers they get smoked by power tools. That does not take away from the enjoyment of doing hand tool work it is just disingenuous to make the claim that they are faster in most cases.

Nice build James. I really kind of "ho-hummed" clicking on it(thinking coaster, who cares,) but I really enjoyed watching and they're really quite beautiful. Thought they might be a perfect gift for someone who sails, the way they lock together...kids are growing up too!...rr

Nice coasters. I've been using 2 part poly and 1 part BLO for finish and I like that it doesn't build a super thick film. I ran out of mineral spirits and thought I'd give it a try and I like it. But it takes a long time to build up the finish.

I have SUCH a hard time keeping my cuts straight. I bought a carcass saw and dovetail saw about 8 months ago and LOVE the feeling of the way they cut. The only disappointing part is my skill level in keeping everything straight.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
the best tip I can give you is shooting a video of your self in line with the saw and from the side. most of the time you will see your arm is out of alinement with the saw, or you are pushing too hard. most of the time people are over controlling the saw.

ok, I'm so glad you made a video on coasters. loved the video btw. I have a question, isn't the purpose of coasters to prevent moisture damage to the surface the coaster is placed on? With that said, when moisture condenses on the glass and runs down to the coaster, doesn't it run off the coaster and on to the surface? I'm just thinking shouldn't coasters be more absorbent than moisture proof? I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on the topic :)
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
that is an interesting idea. I have never had that much problem with the moisture. it tends to evaporate on the wood faster then it pools on the bottom. but most of the time the coaster for me is to protect the table from heat, not moisture
@Migysuperfly
@Migysuperfly 6 лет назад
Wood By Wright ooooh I never thought about the heat aspect. In that case absorption doesn't matter... Different application, different coaster I guess. While you do your glue test I'll work on a universal coaster :)
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
Sounds like a plan.
@4finch

What finish would be used to create the coaster from swelling caused by condensation running off of the glass.? I have made some in the past with BLO and Paste wax and had swelling upon the first use.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
poly can help some, but there is no finish that will fully seal it. if you coat it in epoxy it will work for a season tell the epoxy starts to crack a bit.
@MatthewBuntyn
@MatthewBuntyn 6 лет назад
Do you still buy your BLO from your friend, or have you started making your own?

Nice little project. Why no moisture well (or cork) to capture condensation when your Iced-tea or lemonade (or beer) sweats in the Summer?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
I have never had a problem with moisture as we do not put ice in any of our drinks and we keep the AC on all summer. I am worried more about heat. but for a lot of people, that or a slight dish would be great adaptions.

I think that I would put a hole in each corner and a short peg that only goes half way through from the bottom yet sticks out the bottom to stack them that way you would not have raised peg on top to accidentally set your drink on and possibly spill it. Just a thought.
