Today’s video begins our pre-production series for Making It. This series will take you through the complete filmmaking process. We show you how to build your own directing career with a proof of concept for a tv show idea or a movie idea you may have. You'll watch screenwriter and director SC Lannom and producer Herman Wilkins as they go through the entire pre-production process to make a pilot presentation to serve as a proof of concept for a Television series.
Writing a screenplay or pilot is an important part of the filmmaking process, but getting that pilot script produced and financed can be difficult, and even if you do get someone to accept your script there is a small chance it will be given the attention it needs to become a produced film or tv show. That’s why you need a tv show proof of concept.
TV producers, talent agents, managers - all are super busy and don’t have time to read through a bunch of “could be great” scripts. However, people will watch just about anything, especially if it only takes less than 15 minutes. That’s why you can take matters into your own hands and build a proof of concept for a comedy TV show just like we did.
Learn the directing process of a comedy TV show that you won’t find in film school.
We take you from pre-production to post-production to show you how to make a movie or tv show idea become reality. In this web series, we take a short film and tv show idea and go through the process of directing movies and each of the film production careers associated with creating a proof of concept for a comedy tv show idea.
No filmmaking theory here, just a step by step process of what it looks like to create a proof of concept tv show. The filmmaking process is shown to you in detail, and you will be able to see just how hectic making a TV show pilot on a small budget can be.
Take what you learn from this filmmaking web series and apply it to your next project, whether you’re a director, cinematographer, editor, screenwriter, or filmmaker in general. See how to find and secure crew, find film locations, build shot lists, collaborate with your filmmaking team, see camera work decisions, and filmmaking problem-solving in real-time.
We use our StudioBinder filmmaking tool along the way, so you can see how call sheets, contacts lists, script breakdowns, and more can help you create your own tv show idea on a very small professional budget.

Very often in a production the conflicts happen when the dream story gets crushed by harsh realities: Money vs time vs quality. U want big, hope to get medium, but can only get small. The first one always have to learn in filmmaking: get ready to get dissapointed, a lot, and figure out how to deal with it. Also get ready for others to be dissapointed, and be ready for that.

Having successfuly made three short films, I can tell you multiple locations are not hard, or expensive, if you have a great art director and are realistic. Let's say you need a bedroom, a kitchen, and a living room, for three seperate families. Use the same house! Just decorate it in totally different styles. We got a free fabulous house over two days. No one could tell it was the same house.

One thing I hope filmmakers and writers take away from this: You can create a great story with a minimal budget in mind. Having confines that force you to rewrite your story actually turns out pretty well. A lot of great writers have said that budget restrictions actually helped the creative process. So don't live in la la land while writing your La La Land.

Hey, Studio Binder! Love hearing these insights into a filmmaker's journey and I'm surprised there aren't that many series like these, because I find them more valuable than any masterclass or uni course. We've released our film last year and I took the time to put together a similar series, but commenting on the process, after everything was said and done. @Respectable_Username
@Respectable_Username 9 месяцев назад
Love this concept for a RU-vid series, and mentally thinking how to apply it to my own story I'm working on. I defs couldn't do the pilot I want with that budget, but there is a plotline for one of the middle episodes where the whole twist is that there is no action scene at the end and the characters who have been building up to face off realise it's all a misunderstanding and pleasantly depart. That could be done as a relatively low budget proof of concept with only two locations. Would give a feel for the 4 main characters, have a one-off threat that represents the overall antagonist, and that balance of drama and comedy from the character interactions that underline the series. Hmm, a lot to think about...

I’m loving this series. One question though, if trying to cut down to one location, why not mention you could try and use the one location as multiple locations? For example if you want to use a hospital as a hospital, why not find somewhere else in the hospital that doubles as somewhere else? It’s still only the cost of one location.

Hey, I really enjoyed this. It inspired me to make another film but one of the hurdles is finding a producer and knowing what the producer's compensation is. Typically, I know that most producers only get paid after above the line crew and the investors are paid. I have a question. Can you elaborate about the agreement between the creator and the producer in the series? I want to hire a producer for my concept short but I don't know what to include in the agreement. Thanks. Love your series.

BadKarma 714 you can still be a good one though.. keep practising and you’ll get somewhere. I suck at writing too and I am a lazy ass. I pulled my bestie outta his line of career and put him on mine .. that is to become a filmmaker. Had him get a job in the company where I work and had thought him everything about the great movie making. Now he’s obsessed with the idea too but at least he’s helping me out with the scripts where i get stuck and pretty much helps me with the budgeting, finding actors ( most toughest part if you are looking for someone who works for free and for the thrill of acting). The best way for the lazy asses like us to go at it is to find that one person who can support you with this thing and motivates you when you feel low and the best is when they kinda join you in your goal. It becomes much less harder when there’s a person you trust constantly pushing you but the thing is to find that person in your life. Hope you’d stop being a lazy ass , giving reasons and get at it. Hope this helps.

Is it usually best to shoot with two cameras?
@StudioBinder
@StudioBinder 4 года назад
Really depends on the director's vision and what you can afford. For example, Christopher Nolan shoots all his dramatic scenes with a single camera, while all his action sequences use multi-camera. Also, the type of equipment you use doesn't really matter; there have been great films where the directors have been resourceful in using cheap equipment. South Korean filmmaking duo Park Chan-wook and Park Chan-kyong's film Night Fishing (2011) was shot entirely on an iPhone 4 and won the 61st Berlin International Film Festival! In short, whatever floats your boat. However, be aware of your budget.

pretty disappointed that there was NOTHING on where the budget is coming from and how to get it.

@@SimoBenziane There's also a whole playlist on script breakdowns but this series was advertised as showing ALL aspects of making a short film from start to finish. It seems to me that the financing is a pretty big part of that.

Hi stairway2000, sorry your expectations weren't met. Our blog is a great resource to learn more about any particular topic regarding filmmaking. Here's an article from there that dives deeper into film budgeting: www.studiobinder.com/blog/the-essential-guide-for-crafting-film-budgets-with-free-film-budget-template/ Hope that helps! Cheers! 🎬

@StudioBinder The video is titled "film budgeting" though. It's a bit misleading to say the least. Especially in a series that was meant to cover all the aspects of making it. How can you make a budgeted short without the budget? Seems like a vital part of the process has just been sidelined.
