Today I am showing you how to make a Lavender Infused Oil which is very beneficial for rheumatic pain, painful spasm, head ache; and for use as a cosmetic. I will probably make soap with it but it could also be used as a bath oil or body oil. If you are interested in making herbal preparations I am running a "Plant Wisdom for Women" course on 1st June 2019 so please contact me or go to the website danusirishherbgarden.com for more details

So happy I found this video! Especially thrilled this comes from Ireland! I just returned from my first visit to your wonderful country the end of September! I so fell it love and was sad to leave! My fathers family immigrated from Ireland in 1883 and my dream has always been to visit! Upon arriving I instantly felt a connection and being home now for a bit over a month I can’t let it out of my mind! Everything about Ireland is how I feel deep inside me! I hate the way the US uses so many bad chemicals in everything that is available! They are trying to kill us! Anyways, I have some lavender in my herb garden that brought me to this video and so appreciate you tutorial on how to make this beautiful lavender oil! Now off I go to harvest and get this made! Slainte and God bless! 💚🇮🇪

Besides oil you can make extract using vodka. I boil the vodka first to cook off the alcohol and let it cool and then add spices to it. I shake it every couple of days. Lavender is one of my favorite spices.

Blessings to you; your videos are just so wonderful ! I often use the cc option because there is quite a bit of noise in my household and I can't always hear correctly, even with the volume way up. I wanted to know whether there is anyone doing the editing of those translations, because, let me tell you, the subtitles can range between the absurd to the completely incoherent. Here, for example, I saw the word "lavender" turn into a somewhat baffling "Love and dirt." "Expert assistance" became "expert what a distance," and, my favorite, "a bain-marie" transformed into "a ban Murray." My conclusion is that the subtitles must be written by a program; it is not a huge problem, and at times it's given me a few giggles, but I can't help wondering whether it might be frustrating for people who can't hear at all or those just learning English.

Oooh yes is this oil safe for oral medicine? I have been using lavender consistently for about a year or more for severe C-PTSD and stress related fatigue and pain, I’ve been using lavender and another herb that goes very well with it Decarboxylated (pre heated) to make oil that behave a lot like to CBD oils I’ve tried, has been really beneficial in relation to eating it dry and heated, the effects are really smooth and stay really balanced for about 12 hours, I use on cup herb per one cup oil, I have been trying full spectrum use of herbs (both decarboxylated and dry, if I had the fresh whole plant I would’ve been happy to try that out too.).I just realized while watching this that I’ve been shying away from stating my intentions clearly, I am going to try this out. I have noticed the way you stated your intent, it so clearly stated and it makes so much sense. somehow it haven’t thought of saying my intent that clearly, I’ve been just singing verses that corresponded with my intent- without stating my intention out loud, that makes sense. I am a 21 years old so I am excited for this new bits of knowledge. Thank you for sharing this beautiful video! Have a happy weekend!

It is common to make an infused oil with dried herbs/plants. I tend to use fresh and the Lavender plant does not have a high water content so I have never had an issue with bacteria growing in the oil. If a plant has a high water content I let it wilt for a little while and add a spoonful of vodka to the oil to prevent fungal or bacterial growth.
@wholistiksoul

Thank you Terri for sharing. I'm going to try this method in the nxt week or two with lavender & rosemary, although I'm a wee bit confused coz some people say dry the herbs before infusing them in oil to prevent them going rancid but I see some people like your good self putting the freshly cut lavender into the jar for oil infusion without drying the lavender. Do you have any pointers about using freshly cut herbs versus dried herbs for oil infusions to prevent rancid issues? Blessings Kit x
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden 2 года назад
Different plants contain different amounts of water. Lavender is a dry woody type of plant (like Rosemary) and was in a warm poly-tunnel. If the plant was very damp, such as Dandelion Flowers or leaves, or Plantain; then I would let the plant material wilt for a few hours. If the plant material was especially damp I would add a little shot of vodka to prevent it going rancid. I have never had an oil go bad using these methods. You might want to take into account the atmospherics of the day - ie how damp the day is and maybe take more precautions or wait until a better dryer day.

I've since learned to put a little drop of vodka in the the oil while the lavender, or plant material, is infusing as this prevents spoilage. Once the oil is strained - after a few weeks - I use it in soap making. Other plants I infuse I tend to use in salves. The main thing is to keep everything clean so there is no spoilage. Carefully done, the oil should last for a long time but I always infuse with a project in mind so my oils do not sit around too long.

If you are in a very cold climate grow your Lavender under cover or cover it over winter.

HI do you dry the Lavender first before putting it in the oil? also How do you Dry out Lavender
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden 3 года назад
You don't have to dry it first although let it wilt a while so that the water content evaporates and then it is less likely that the oil will spoil. To dry any herb, place it in a basket in the shade in a warm place; hang it up or hang in paper bags. Some people also use a dehydrator.

I watched this video hoping it would answer some questions I had but now I just have even more questions. haha. I want to make some dandelion oil with avocado oil (because allergies) but everywhere I look online, I get different information! I am beyond confused but maybe someone here can help me out? Should I completely fill my jar with dandelions like you did with the lavender? I assume so but some placed online said only like half way full. Does that only effect the strength of it? And what should I do with it once it is filled? Some places say it needs to be in a sunny spot so the warmth will help it infuse but other places say if you put it in the sun it will get moldy so you should put it in a cupboard or something. And then some places say only let it infuse for 2 weeks so it doesn't go bad and other places say for like, up to 6 weeks! I am so sorry for the bombardment, but if anyone happens to have any advice I will gladly and wholeheartedly welcome it. I do not have a lot of dandelions so if I try something and it fails I won't really have enough to try again so I am a bit nervous to just wing it...
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden 2 года назад
Hi Chris, first of all don't be nervous. There are no hard and fast rules. You know what to do, deep down inside. Many herbalists do things their own way. It is like when you make bread or a cake. You have a recipe but you might prefer less sugar or more butter or more raisins - so there is a "recipe" so to speak and you make it your own. Here are some rules that make sense and then you do it your way. With Dandelions you have to use fresh flowers. You can fill the jar or half fill it. What I would do is LOOSELY fill it - the Dandelions are in up to the top but are not packed in tightly. Then cover with oil and leave enough space to add a capful of vodka as this will help preserve it and stop mould. All oils should be kept in a dark cupboard or out of the light, except for St. John's Wort which needs the sun to release the constituents into the oil. You can leave your Dandelion oil for two, three, four or six weeks. There is no fixed rule on this. Just go with your intuition.Just make it, put it away out of the light, let it infuse and then strain.

@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden 4 года назад
If you mean the generic "vegetable" oil in clear plastic bottles, I would not recommend that. They are often rancid and then chemically treated and deodorised so personally I wouldn't use them for anything. The best oil to use would be organic, cold pressed - and there are a number you could choose from. Olive oil, Sweet Almond, Sunflower being the most commonly used for this work. Hope that helps.

@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden 4 года назад
Yes although if it is one that becomes solid at room temperature you will have to melt it before you infuse the Lavender and then again when you want to strain it. Personally I wouldn't use coconut oil like that because the repeated use of heat could damage it unless you were very slow and careful.

Shouldn't we be leaving in a cool dry place to infuse slowly over 6-8 weeks? Sun (especially strong sunlight) will ruin the good properties of good cold pressed carrier oils.
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden 2 года назад
There are various ways to infuse a plant into oil. Solar infusion is one way - it is a matter of personal choice. The warmth of the sun adds solar energy to the finished product. I live in the west of Ireland and we rarely get heat that would be damaging.
