Making leather armor for Moiraine Damodred in the Wheel of Time + free pattern

Today I made the leather bolero of the Aes Sedai Moiraine Damodred, played by Rosamund Pike in the TV serie The Wheel of time. It was a project completely made with hand tools, using techniques of leather carving, leather tooling and dye. This costume piece was my favorite thing in this new adaptation of the Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan.
“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend.”
This world filled with Aes Sedai, magic, heroes and beautiful worlds is one of my favorite books.
❤️Thanks for watching. I love making costumes and cosplays and hope to share a lot more about the sewing process, tell me what you think !

to remove the metallic shine from the leather dye, it takes a few passes, but once it's dry, you need to buff or gently rub with a piece of sheep shearling cut offs or a really soft cloth, to rub off the shine for the blue to show, then do a second coat of the color, buff again, then seal it in with a wax coating - I hope this helps you for your next project. I think the polish removed the shine as well which also works in some ways to even out the color
@HazarielAtelier
@HazarielAtelier 2 года назад
thanks for the advice!
@TrappedinSLC
@TrappedinSLC 2 года назад
Yeah, it’s just excess dye on the surface of the leather - the purple-metallic effect is just from some of the pigments in the dye. In fountain pen ink that effect is what gives you inks that ‘sheen’ - where they look different and kind of metallic when you look at the paper from the right angles with the right lighting?
@HazarielAtelier
@HazarielAtelier 2 года назад
@@TrappedinSLC ah yes indeed it looks very similar!
@mattphipps1368
@mattphipps1368 2 года назад
@@HazarielAtelier The metallic shine you saw when the dye dried happens frequently and it is called bronzing. Bronzing is a result of excess "pigment" on the surface and to correct it all you need to do is buff it off with a soft, lint free cloth or sheep wool. As you discovered, it may take a while to get your dye color to even out. And as a general rule when you dye leather you want the leather dry - not wet. The water will thin out the dye and your color may come out blotchy and uneven. Otherwise you did a fantastic job.
@TheCyberwolfe
@TheCyberwolfe 2 года назад
I'm impressed with how well this came together from someone new to leather working - well done! Now for the tips: as you mentioned, leather dries out in different ways in different parts of the leather. When using Fiebing's Pro dye, I've had good results by rubbing some Neatsfoot Oil into the leather the day before I dye it. This evens out the moisture content, and the oil assists with dye penetration. That balm that you rubbed in after did some of the same thing, but it works better to do that before the dye.

firstly, as a leather crafter searching for ideas i came across your channel. this is a indeed beautiful piece. your attention to detail is remarkable. the "bronzing" you experienced as your dye dried is due to excess pigment being left on the surface of the leather. it is common with blues and black. but as you discovered, the remedy is lots of buffing. it can be mitigated by using multiple light coats allowing adequate dry time between (for gray to black ranges, I tend to use a vinegaroon - a fine steal wool dissolved in vinegar over a week or so - as its a chemical reaction turning the leather black and not a dye) all that aside i will be looking for the completion of this costume that's sure to be stunning
