Making liquid chlorine gas and then ampouling it

In this video I will liquify and then ampoule chlorine gas. Liquid Cl2 is a yellow substance that will stay a liquid under its own vapour pressure when ampouled. These ampoules are dangerous. They must be heat tested for safety purposes before considering to store them long term.

Made liquid filled chlorine bromine and xenon ampules. All three got sealed in plastic. In my case it was polycarbonate resin cylinders. The xenon was the coolest of them because if cool it was liquid and gas, if warmed a bit it goes supercritical and you can watch the phase separation disappear. All three were made of thick wall borosilicate capillary tubing salvaged from broken HeNe lasers believe it or not. 🤓

I used to sell liquid chlorine ampules sealed in resin here in the states. Maybe you could sell them there in the EU and make some well deserved funding for your channel? Just be sure that the resin is good and thick and do drop tests as well as heat tests to ensure that they will stand up to shipping.

@@THYZOID If you´re ready to sell sealed gases in Germany, please notify us. I planed to make some liquid CO2 ampules to see the phases change, but quickly realised that this project is unfortunately out of my financial reach to buy and do it all by myself...especially for toxic but especially elements like chlorine

Chlorine becomes supercritical at 79 atmospheres 290.75°F (143.75°C).

How long can you store your dry ice in the styrofoam boxes shown in the video?

10 Kilograms of dry ice can be stored in a single styrofoam box for at least 7 days at 0*C outside temperature. Because only 2 kilograms were bought yesterday and they are stored in two styrofoam boxes in summer I cannot tell you about them. At least I can always get more dry ice because it’s produced nearby.

Great video! Thanks! Yet I don't understand one thing in your apparatus: why don't you directly route chlorine gas from the first funnel to the cooling bath? What's the use of the additional funnel filled with sulfuric acid? Thanks!

With this route of Cl2 generation it will always contain some water. The washing bottle filled with a drying reagent removes that excess water.

there´s a myriad of ways to make it. i don´t know about specific literature but almost any chemistry book has some prep for chlorine most using permanganate and HCl.

How do you deal with the remaining reacted waste of cyanuric acid? I find extremely difficult to get rid of even it is quite soluble in water, is there is better way to decompose it quicker?

Yeah pack it up and bring it to a chemical disposal site or just add all of it to a big container and store it because you are too lazy to get rid of it now (like I did). In Germany disposing of chemical waste is free. If you are talking about cleaning the dirty flask, I used to clean it with hot piranha solution. Worked like a charm. Now I’ll have to find other ways of cleaning.

Question? I've asked a few individuals about using h2so4 for ground glass joints, and I was told never do that as eventually weaken the glass! These individuals you ask? My chemistry professor, a customer service representative at USA Labs, a representative at the help line, at Eisco labs, and my brother in law, who worked 20+ years at DuPont labs! So why would you do that???

I see no reason why it should weaken the glass. sulfuric acid is the ideal grease for dealing with corrosive chemicals most of the time. many people use it without any problem and even various papers recommend it.

Borosilicate glass is extremely resistant to sulfuric acid and the acid won't weaken the glass except perhaps after hundreds of years of exposure.

Hey during a simmer of lofeguarding i was breathing in sodium hypochlorite unknowing. Now i have hard to explain internal organs issues Does this e plain the toxicity of the chorine i was exposed to via inhalation

sodium hypochlorite doesnt fume as much as you think it does. however if you ever opened one of the granular calcium hypochlorite bins it would be a bad idea to stick your face inside and breathe it. theres not a lot of super hazardous things in the pump room.

How necessary is the washing bottle in the middle of the setup? What is its purpose if you also have a desiccator? Also, does the molarity of H2SO4 matter?

Without the washing bottle filled with either anhydrous CaCl2, conc. sulfuric acid or some other drying agent suitable for chlorine you will have moisture in the liquid chlorine ampoule and this moisture is visible (a small amount of water sticking to the walls of the ampoule makes it less appealing to look at). Sulfuric acid as a drying agent should be somewhat concentrated. I guess everything above 90% should work

@@THYZOID did a 3rd and 4 th try, using propane to liquefy it and dryice to cool it while sealing. Couldnt get the Quartz tube to melt properly and it leaked out again :(( ( only have oxy propane/ mapp) Bought some 10mm borosilicate tube with 2.2mm wall thickness, will that be thick enought for that diameter?

Yes because it is pressurized. At some point it will become a gas again but I don’t know if the ampoule would survive. Maybe content for a future video?

We will do (far in the future) but I’ll have to set up everything with a few experts who have knowledge in this stuff first. Making even safer quartz ampoules totally free of OH groups is an absolute necessity.
