Mattias, one of the things I appreciate about your videos is having the right amount of safety for your projects. You are not doing safety things for no apparent reason, but are protecting yourself from foreseeable threats. Thanks for sharing.

If you made one more of the stiles and ripped it in half, you'd have a jig that would hold the slats in exactly the right alignment to insert them into the stiles. -jcr

People have added tilting tables to it. Personally, I need that so rarely, that I figure I can just make a wedge and clamp it on the table for when I need it. and if the table is non-adjustable, it can't be misadjusted the rest of the time. Think of tilting your table saw by half a degree, and only noticing it isn't square after cutting up a lot of wood.

Here in North Carolina we call them hurricane shutters because you close them to protect your windows from flying debris during a hurricane. The louvers provide reasonable protection to your windows, are lighter weight, are easier to repair (assuming they're built with that in mind), and look decent (important since they are usually permanently mounted on hinges beside the window).

Matthias, I'm a big fan. You do a great job of making videos as well as making things. I understand there are several lessons to learn in the building of the shutter you did. I am a little curious however why you chose to make fixed slats rather than ones with posts into the styles so that the louvres could be opened and closed. You could still use the router and the drafting software but end up with a better product and it should actually be easier to route and put together. Regards, Ray

I enjoyed the zoom at the end of this video, that's the first one I've noticed you to use. Your video production skills are quite admirable for RU-vid DIYmedia by the way, probably the best I've seen actually. The only facet that needs any improvement is your dialogue recording at those times when you've stepped away from the camera. It has gotten better, I'll give you that. What microphone are you using, sounds like your depending on your camera mounted mic most times Sound guy Subscriber

Nope. Though the pantorouter could be used for that as well - for making the dowel ends on the slats. And it could also be used for making a series of holes with a plunge bit.

This is awesome! I just built the quick set tenon jig, which is awesome! I wonder if you were to create another rail, and band saw off the top, if you could use it for aligning the slats into the other rail? This would look like a skewed comb, or finger board.

@Matthias Wandel may I make a suggestion? specifically for that project you just did, why not, on one side, make the slots deeper, so you can turn it over, and just put every single one in, so you don't have to work so tricky? they're glued to finalize the project anyway, and nobody can see the empty space left behind.
@matthiaswandel
@matthiaswandel 6 лет назад
this was many years ago. Also, I don't want the slats to be that loose, and I certainly don't want to cut the slots deeper than absolutely necessary.
@luismiguelhernandezhernand2002
Hello Matthias Wandel. My name is Luis Miguel Hernández. I live in Guadalajara Jalisco Mexico. I like you pant router with wooden base. You are a specialist in the area of woodworking, you have much knowledge of how to do it and how excellent techniques achieve the finished product. I admire your work, you are for me a great master of carpentry, and you are my model to be followed, I being a Carpenter apprentice. I can count on your support as a teacher to be able to make my own router pantograph project. You could send me a diagram, to follow the process of manufacture it, to manufacture the slot with perfection. Language is no obstacle to recognize all the experience, knowledge and potential that you characterize as a great master of this beautiful profession of carpentry.

I think if you cut and file two of the templates at once, then file a tiny bit more off the second one, you could make a guide for inserting the shutters by plunging the router bit fully through a slimmer rail.

That would be for shutters with tilting slats, which these ones don't.
@wvb93
@wvb93 12 лет назад
what is the function of a shutter like that? my only guesses are that they could let air through into your house for a gentle breeze, gentle compared to having the window open, or that, angled correctly, they could let in sun light for more indoor light. or do they just look good?

They could have a variety of purposes. The most useful, in my opinion, would be to block out sunlight and provide privacy while having the window open for air flow.
