I just clicked on the link for the Cactus Juice, and underneath the Amazon description there was an ad for a Vali product promising "Thicker, fuller and stronger hair." Had to laugh at that one! Nice, traditional mallets, by the way.

I have the 64 dollar question if the “Cactus Juice” is supposed to stabilize and increase the durability of the wood why did you not make the mortises in the mallet heads and then perform the wood stabilization process. It would seem to me that doing that way would allow more of the Cactus Juice to suck into the interior wood and thus making the mallet head more durable. My preferred medium to work in is metal and not fiber based carbohydrate substrate.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 лет назад
Surprisingly the vacuum will soak the juice all the way into the middle. but the big reason is that the wood will move as it takes on the juce. this means the mortise will not fit as it did before stabilization.

Have you ever worked with bodarc, otherwise known as Osage Orange wood? That stuff would make a prodigious mallet; although it would take a long time and many tool sharpenings. Probably wouldn't have to stabilize it, though.

thanks Tim. I use to do more detailed videos but they have not had a good reception lately. I am thinking of starting another channel with that kind of detailed information. Basically the bigger the wood or the faster the cut I chose bigger teeth. the big rip saw I used was 5PPI the crosscut for cutting the faces was 10ppi the carcus saw for the smaller cuts was 14 ppi.

Excellent and beautifully made mallets! You soaked the mallet heads in a vacuum chamber with "cactus juice" to stabilize the wood. Is that actual juice from a cactus (if so, what kind?) Or, is that just what everyone calls it? Either way, I'd like to know what that stuff is! Also, you have a really great vacuum chamber. Could someone use a Bell Jar with the wood in a bucket? Great work! Great video! Thanks! (BTW: been following Leo for about 9 mos-- binged all the videos from before-- very impressive young man, very impressive work. Always happy to see other makers helping Leo out with their equally impressive work! Love all you guys!)

How much fun is live oak? I cut a piece on a chop saw once and it was like going through steel on a metal cutting saw; without the sparks and such. Hand sawing all that? And planing some of it too?? Did you have to sharpen stuff up when you were done or hone in the middle of the project? Also, do you have a video on your vacuum chambers and stabilizing punky wood?

What if we don’t have a pressure cooker/chamber to stabilize? Would the wood just not hold up?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
If this would were good wood all the way through. I would not stabilize it. The black sections on the bottom or spalted to the point that I could push my thumb nail into it. That is just too soft for a mallet and it would crumble very quickly. Most all of my mail its are made from a solid piece of burl or crotch grain and do not need to be stabilized.

@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 4 года назад
Live oak is an oak tree that keeps its leaves all year round. It's generally only found in the south of the United States. It's very similar to White oak which is also very similar to an English oak. However live oak has a much more twisted grain than either White oak or English oak.

You should just ask Leo for wood ends, bits and bobs in return for labor and then you can craft them as you wish and sell them. Leo doesn't need all those wood ends, bits and bobs--and if you feel somewhat guilty about profiteering off leftovers, you could always donate a small percentage of sales for TallyHo. hate to watch all those wood ends, bits and bobs go to waste, especially the purpleheart and teak.

I'm like 3 years late on this but I have a bunch of questions about this video: 1) what was wrong with the old mallets that you didn't like? 2) why is it called cactus juice? it's obviously not made from actual cactus juice 3) why not do more of the shaping and drilling it out for the handle before you stabilize them? 4) why did you finish the hammering surface when you know it's just going to get wacked away immediately on use? 5) shouldn't the angle of the mallet be based on the length of the handle? wouldn't the larger mallet have a shallower angle than the smaller one? 6) what did Leo and his crew thinks about the new mallets that you've made?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright Год назад
1. The old mallets had square faces rather than having an angle to them and it makes you hit things off angle. If you tried one you know they just don't feel right. 2. Cactus juice is the brand name for the stabilizing fluid. 3. If I did all the shaping before the stabilizing then the shape changes after the stabilization as the wood absorbs all of the resin. So I have to do most of the shaping afterwards once the head has taken its final shape. 4. It is best practice to finish all faces so that the wood absorbs moisture at the same rate. Otherwise you'll have some surfaces that swell slightly more. Where the water can get in faster. Not to mention it just looks odd if you don't finish it. 5. You actually grip a mallet right up at the head. A hammer you want to hold all the way down at the base so you have a full amount of leverage. But for the mallet you hold it up next to the head. The reason you have the rest of the handle is for balance. If you've ever tried to use one with a short handle you'll know it just feels wrong. And as to the angle that's personal preference wherever it feels good to you. Some people like it with a slightly more shallow and some people like it with a slightly more aggressive it depends on how you swing your hand. It's the fulcrum is not where your hand is at it's how you swing your arm. 6. They use them quite extensively over the last few years.

I'm intrigued as to why you wouldn't create the hole for the handle before stabilising the head? Surely it would be easier to machine at that point, and the hole would only help with the stabilising penetration?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 лет назад
Surprisingly the vacuum will soak the juice all the way into the middle. but the big reason is that the wood will move as it takes on the juce. this means the mortise will not fit as it did before stabilization. on top of that the stabilized wood is actually easier to work with a chisel then the raw live oak as the oak is fractious. The stabilized wood is much smoother and does not break away as easily.
@williammueller768
@williammueller768 5 лет назад
Just got a chance to watch this video. Question though: If you put the mallet head in the vacuum container after the handle center has been cut out, would the pressure cause the head to crack because the center is gone?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 лет назад
thanks. no. It is not a pressure pot, but a vacuum chamber, it just sucks the air out of the wood. the problem with creating the mortise first is that the moisture will change the shape of the head a bit. you could rough out the hole first, but I would not fully shape it as the handle will not fit after. the wood is easier to work after it is stabilized at the wood is homologous and will not tear out. that is why I prefer to cut the hole after.
@jackmiller3628
@jackmiller3628 6 лет назад
I thought the purpose of a mallet was to provide a hammer head that was softer than what you were hitting. If you can’t drill it easily does that defeat its purpose?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
Often that is useful, but for pounding on a fairled chisel or driving in a tunnel the hardness does not matter just something slightly softer the steel. that being said the stabilized wood is very soft, just it is very flexible making it hard for the lead screw to bight in the wood.
@ychyro
@ychyro Год назад
hi! way not make the stabilizing processe next to work the wood? cheers
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright Год назад
The problem with doing stabilization later is that the wood is going to move a lot. As the wood soaks it up it will enlarge slightly and distort a bit. So if you make too many changes beforehand it won't work as well afterwards.

Is it necessary to use resin on mallets? I realize they will last longer but seems like an unnecessary use of toxins.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
normally I do not however this was the scrap cut offs that could not be used in the boat and some of it was very Punky it would not work well as a mallet using the resin allows that to be used as a male ahead. Also with cactus juice it's not a normal resin and not something that is toxic. It's actually water safe and most people have no problems dipping their hands in it. I was also working with epoxy at the time so I kept my gloves on.

Nice vids and nice mallets - but please explain why did not finish the cutting and forming before you did the vacuum infusion.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
because the Cactus juice all needs to clean off before finish. I did not cut the mortise as the shape of the block will change slightly as it absorbs the juice.

Maybe just a rough out, with like 1/4 or 1/2 margins even. I was thinking more about improving the penetration of the caucus juice, exposing internal end grain through the mortise

(I'm a bowl turner) it definitely changes the character of the wood but I guess i've never noticed any major shifts in the dimensions of a piece before (but then, my tolerances are pretty large when i'm roughing out a bowl blank) I would think doing possibly the basic boring out, and hog out the bulk, then infuse, and then go back and pare down to the finish dimension. But it's easy to armchair quarterback this stuff... these came out nice and he found a solution. Nice bonus, the resin would give them more heft too. I'm wondering if the BLO is even really required; the resin may be plenty all on it's own! The BLO does give it a nice glow however :)

Where do you suppose the Live Oak came from? I would be interested in knowing how the different species of Live Oak fair in woodworking. I would be interested in helping procure a few varieties here in California, if you are interested!

Live oak grows predominantly in AL and GA and the surrounding states.

@@WoodByWright Ok, you are working with Southern Live Oak (Quercus virginiana). There are a few species/subspecies here on the west coast and I have a chunk of Interior Live Oak (Quercus wislizeni) firewood I was planning on making a hammer out of as well.

Question: I am new to "Normalizing" and conceptually it makes sense to my wee brain. I understand the "Why" but would it have served you better to hog out the handle holes first before you normalized? You would then (In theory) get better penetration into the wood? Then finished sizing of the hole to accommodate the handle? Or would there be too much stress on the wood? Just a question on why one way and not the other so I can wrap my head around it.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
As the wood absorbs the juice it does change and move just as if it would absorb water. So I save most of the finish work until afterwards. As to hogging up the whole beforehand that really doesn't help the penetration as using a vacuum will pull the juice all the way through the entire block.

James, I've been a follower of Leo, since Doug at SVSeeker steered me that way. I saw you at Leo's place a while ago, and followed the links. Should have been here, a LONG time ago. OK, why the "not square" faces? Looks like your hands could get too close to the work. (Yes, I did just sign up. It seems that most of the people I follow, make stuff. Or, repair it.) Oh, was that wood from the trip to the South? I liked that episode. steve

I've used 5 - 9 degrees but don't know why. Is there is reason ? Seems less of an angle is better ergonomically. But didn't know if there was some historic reason. Thanks James. Great video
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
I misspoke and meant to say 5 not 9. that bit of an angle is drawing a radius from the fulcrum of your hand along the face of the mallet making it hit flatter then if the face were 90 degrees to the base of the mallet.

Your clogs are superb! Funny that people hold pencils differently now. It looks clumsy to an old git. I’m glad you keep your eye on the teeth when sawing (H&S). A bandsaw would speed things up, but you wouldn’t live as long. I draw the line at manual ripping. Great music. I wonder if English mallets were made from wet wood. Modern ones seem to be made of beech. My mallets are turned from small logs. Great video.
