Being the tool junkie you are I was surprised you didn't use a chair devil on the handle. Yeah I know it's a fancy scraper, though I've found them easier on my old thumb joints.

I made a purpleheart mallet of similar size, about 10 years ago and it has held up quite well. Has the right heft and feel upon striking with it. Good work!!

Great idea and excellent video... you can never have too many mallets! :-) 👍👍👍 Here's a funny one for you-- I was at Harbor Freight yesterday looking at a scroll saw for a production idea... much faster and cleaner than coping saw. And thought "I'm not going to push all this stuff around and I need to make a pitstop... augh! ... Okay, that's done, and on the way back I stopped to check on tarps to collect wood chips then get back to the power tools. 😳😬🙈🙈🙈 Some guy blows in off the street and grabs my stuff, heads to the register, buys everything and takes off! 💁🙈🙈🙈😆🤣😂💁💁💁 So i ended up with a tarp for all my troubles! lol 🙄🙄🙄😂🤣😆

James I totally enjoyed watching you make this mallet. I learn more by watching how you use each tool and your comments on your thought process. I need to start making my mallett since I bought a piece of ash just for the project. And I can use your card scrapper I bought from you which I really like how big and thick it is. I hope to see more videos on how you make things. Thanks.

Very nice. A shipwright told me the mallet faces are at different angles for different swings. If you're choking up on the handle you want a steeper angle because you are making a smaller circle at the wrist. Opposed to the large circle made by a swing from the elbow.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 месяцев назад
I have seen people do that when they work with larger timbers. oddly enough that is the technical difference between a hammer and a mallet. a mallet is meant to be chocked up on where as a hammer you hold at the end of the hammer and swing it.

Ah Boy James, you and your Oak, glad to see you use something different (just jealous, wish we could easily and affordably get oak here) ;-) Love that Sycamore, such beautiful grain. Next time you're going to be using some purple heart and want a contrasting, but matching wood, try getting ahold of some green heart, they work and look really good together - I have a mallet made of that combo and a just green heart one as well - actually like the green heart the most.

I love the look of purple heart, but I’m having a very hard time planing it without a ton of tear out. Any tips for a relatively new woodworker?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 месяцев назад
sharper iron and thinner cut will remove 90% of it. the rest you can get by moving the chip breaker closer tot he tip and closing up the mouth. I have a few videos on planning difficult grain if you want to see more. here is one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M_PfYRUOl58.html

How do you keep the purple heart purple when adding the oil? Mine always turns brown when adding oil. Beautiful work there!
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 месяцев назад
oxygen will turn it purple. The oil should just richen the tone of the purple. UV light will then turn it brown over time. I am not sure what oil would turn it brown. you might want to leave it out in the open air for a day or two before oiling it.

Beautiful mallet, I'm sure the man will enjoy it! So did I miss it, or is there no glue between the handle and the head?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 месяцев назад
No glue. The handle is a wedge and so the more you use it the more you swing at the tighter it gets. Plus you can take it apart if you need to.
@anonymousaccordionist3326
@anonymousaccordionist3326 8 месяцев назад
Is there more than one purple coloured wood? I've worked with (very small) pieces of wood that were intended to be purple heart, but none of it ever lost its colour when I worked it. Yours turned a light brown as soon as you planed or cut it. I carved the pieces I used and they never changed in colour throughout the process.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 месяцев назад
There are several different variations of purple heart. Some of them oxidize differently at different rates.
@Flyfishinchief

Very nice, James! Love the verse, too. Question: in the carving, how often are you stropping your gouges?
@WoodByWrightHowTo

usually once every 10-20 minutes. for this project it was just once at the beginning.

If you did not have a jack yet and you were going to do this project and decided you wanted the jack for it, would you buy the low angle or high angle?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 месяцев назад
The traditional high angle is more difficult to learn but more versatile in the end. The low angle is preferred by most modern hybrid woodworkers as it's easier to learn.

@@WoodByWrightHowTothanks for that answer. Looking to follow suit on this mallet as my first project. Is Curupay usable for this purpose? I won’t be breaking it, I hope. And does handle material matter all that much? Found a 1.5 x 1.5 x 11 or so piece of flamed maple for cheap and it just seemed like it might be nice together with the curupay.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 месяцев назад
that would work perfectly. it will be a pain to work bout would make a nice head. as to the handle most any hard wood is great for it. but you might want something a bit longer. even though you hold it by the head the handle provides balance.

@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 месяцев назад
Could if you wanted to but there's no reason to. The wedged handle makes it so it will never come off and it just slowly gets tighter and tighter. I like to leave it unglued just so I can easily pound the handle out if I ever need to.

I prefer Jeremiah 23:29b: "always share the whole verse in the description, or pinned comment, rather than making people look it up" He was quite the prophet. "Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?"

Jame... I love you, brother. Please don't take this as an attack, but you need to start eating at a calorie deficet. You need to start worrying about it while it's still managable. Don't take this as gosple but if you start eating between 1600 to 1800 calories for a few weeks youll start to see results. Go online and find a calculator that takes your weight hight and age into account. You look to be about ~20% body fat you want to be around 15ish. I want you to stay healthy and hearty, brother.
