Androids capable of writing and drawing, which embodied Enlightenment ideas about links between mechanical and human action, continue to inspire poets, artists, and engineers to this day. This creation became the basis for Brian Selznick's novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret (2007), which Martin Scorsese adapted into the award-winning film Hugo (2011). Long a mystery, the android's maker was revealed during restoration in the twentieth century; when the clockwork motor is set in motion, the figure signs his drawing "the automaton of Maillardet."
Maillardet hid the mechanics of his lifelike Draughtsman-Writer, a seamless blend of art and science, in a cabinet rather than in the figure. This allowed for larger machinery and greater memory than in earlier efforts: an unprecedented three poems and four drawings are translated by the action of the figure, through a technology that foretold the computer.

Henry Maillardet (Swiss, born 1745). The Draughtsman-Writer, ca. 1800. Brass, steel, wood, fiber. Franklin Institute, Philadelphia

Well, I don't think that's a fair comparison. The two are very different in the terms of build and utility. Sophia is already more impressive because of her ability to speak with relative intelligence, free from outside influence. Plus, you have to consider that the effort was put into that said speaking ability, not her ability to move fluidly. If you want something to compete with this, look at some of Boston Dynamic's bots. When you factor in those things' ability to be upgraded ( Which, this could be updated, but the amount of effort needed probably wouldn't justify the end result ) this amazing, but sadly still limited, piece of machinery is blown out of the water. Future is bright, my friend.

A robot today would not be able to write or draw like that. Genius engineering.

I can imagine when these amazing works of art wete being created and displayed to the public that it must have been an extraordinary experience to see them perform. I know TODAY seeing this marvel for the first time, an Automaton , I can't stop watching them. What brilliant minds must have created them. Thank you.

I saw this at the Franklin Institute over 60 years ago and it is the source of my love and admiration for automata of all kinds now.

How do they carve those cams to make the machine's movements so precise?

I mean people do, but the specific techniques tended to die with their creator so it's something of a lost art

It costed a small fortune back in the day, you can certain have one made today but it would cost the same small fortune.

Those brass disks remind me of the way that the older disney animatronics work. I believe a lot of them run on a series of shaped & stacked vinyls (correct me if im wrong) Very interesting

The first time I ever saw anything like this was in thw film hugo. It has an Automata that looks just like this one and it wouldn't surprise me if it is the same machine Truly amazing that something like thos was built in 1800

Where can I find very high resolutiomn images and/or videos of the back of the automaton? The key of the mechanism is the part under its shoulders, but all videos I can find are too low in resolution to see needed details, I need to figure out if it uses spherical joints or multi-joints, because I am trying to build a replica. I already built a mechanical arm with 3 DOF which can be driven by a single motor in the body, but I totally invented the mechanis, instead I would like to replicate this one. Any help? Github repos? Blogs?
