Excellent ID and tincturing info!!! Little known: rubbing calendula flowers/ leaves on skin after contact with poison ivy (or poison oak) will almost immediately counter the effects of the poison.❤💜

Wow really!? I knew Jewelweed was amazing for that, but I didn't know that about Calendula. Thanks so much for sharing.

@@SpiraeaHerbsfyi, the biggest exception to the rule for using the tops/flowers for a tincture is goldenrod. In this case, the stems and leaves have the most med. properties. Don't shoot the messenger!! G will overpower Water vibration ailments.

2 minutes in and I've learned 2 useful things that have nothing to do with Calendula. I'm Ontario too, and the mosquitoes are insane. Thanks!!! 😊

I make tea with calendula and put it on my very ichy cat. He has stopped pulling out his fur and stopped scratching all the time. For me, I infuse it with witch hazel and put on my ichy skin after gardening.

Oh that's amazing! I love how safe this plant is. We can even use it on our furry friends.

I really enjoy your videos they are so helpful. I love that you're using fresh plants rather than dried and the leaves and not just the flowers. I have been wondering about that lately. Surely the leaves would also be useful included in an infused oil too? They are so full of the resins and aromas - more so than the petals - so it seems strange not to use them.

@SpiraeaHerbs 3 месяца назад
I've done it both ways! Both effective but the colour will be different if you include the leaves. Deeper and not as sunshiney.

Love calendula Wondering about its use in soothing and improving gut health Recall reading about this point some time ago
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 3 месяца назад
It's neither a carminative or bitter which are normally the healing properties I am looking for when it comes to the gut. However, it is a vulnerary and anti-inflammatory so it could help if you had ulcers.
@donnaconyers5189
@donnaconyers5189 3 месяца назад
Right. That’s what it was anti inflammatory for ulcers. Thank you

Thank you. How do you burn the coffee grounds to keep Mosquitos away please?
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 24 дня назад
We used a heat proof class and a BBQ lighter. Getting them to stay lit was a bit of a challenge. We've also tried a small charcoal bricket and that worked fairly well too.

Is it ok to keep adding fresh plant matter to an already-started tincture?
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs День назад
This is a great question! So to be very frank... you can do whatever you want! Lol. BUT, I personally would not do that. I would make smaller quantities if I only had small amounts of herbs available at one time. I would rather have a bunch of 100ml jars rather than continually exposing the jar to oxygen. But that is my personal preference.

You said you leave the herb in the tincture and only press it when you need it. Is there a limit on how long you would leave the herbs in the jar?

I have some tinctures that are over 5 years old! As long as they are in the cool and dark location and away from water and the lid is on well... they can store for a very very long time!

Thanks so much for sharing! Would dried calendula make an effective tincture? Could you please share where you get your alcohol in bulk in Ontario? Thank you for all the practical herbal education again!
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 3 месяца назад
Personally I try to use fresh herbs if possible BUT if dried is what you have, as long as its good quality dried I would try it. Astringency in herbs does increase as the plant dries, so just be aware of that :) Alcohol is getting increasingly more difficult to source! I used to be able to buy overproof directly from Greenfield, but no longer. My suggestion is to reach out to small distilleries near you to see if they sell it. I am trying to source something more local right now myself. Good luck!

What zone do you garden in?
@SpiraeaHerbs
@SpiraeaHerbs 3 месяца назад
According to the USDA maps we're a 5a, but I feel like due to the high winds we can get in the winter, our land behaves more like a 4. We're right on the border between those two.

@SpiraeaHerbs

I thought I replied to this already, but I keep getting notifications for it so here we go again! Lol. We put ground coffee in a heat proof vessel and we set in on fire so it can smoke. Does seem to help!

@@cathyfleischmann7067 We've tried both... fresh ground works best (stays lit better). So we just bought cheap coffee that we wouldn't drink and BURN it. Ha ha
