I'm going to try these this year... btw, for putting the paper on the wood, I buy full sheet decal paper! It sands off pretty easy and adheres even better! Thank you for all of the great videos!
Great idea, Mark! I'll have to give decal paper a try sometime! Glad you enjoyed the video - be sure to post a pic if you end up making some reindeer, I'd love to see them! :)
I watched so many videos from different YT'ers but this one is the best. Thanks also for the free download. In my family, this Christmas, "YOU GET A REINDEER! AND YOU GET A REINDEER!!" And I'll keep the best of the bunch for my mantle. Yes, I can be petty.
Aww, thank you for the kind words! Yeah the other styles of reindeer look a little too cheesy for my tastes, but they ultimately inspired this project so credit where credit is due! 😊 Hope you enjoy the template, and I'd love to see pictures of any you might make. Thanks man, appreciate it! Things are weird in Covid times but you could definitely check to see if you have a maker space near you! That's how I got started a few years ago, and now I'm turning my garage into my own workshop! 😂 P.S. I'm a full stack web dev by day so I may have to check out some of your videos too!
Yep, should be! I think I used a 1/4 inch blade which is about 6mm. It's also 6 teeth per inch (6 TPI) - not sure what that equates to in metric though. Good luck!
Brilliant, but you lost me when you were figuring out on the computer how to do it, but that's my age. Love what you did, I am going to give it a go. Thanks x
He was just sharing his process of figuring out the pattern he would eventually use. He’s taken out the guesswork for anyone wanting to make these and is sharing it for free on his website. I’ve downloaded the template and have made dozens since the weekend. They’re great and the family loves them.
@lucyanneanne5411 Haha as that part of the video showed I barely knew what I was doing myself! I took a lot of "wrong turns" on my journey to get the computer to simulate the bandsaw cuts. Hope you enjoy the template and giving it a go! 😊
Tried to sign up for the download twice, but never received an email. Would love to get the template! Update, finally came through, though it took a while. Thanks for the plans.
I love your deer! Can you tell me what blade size you used? I tried to cut one at my Makerspace and it didn’t seem to want to cut it. It could just be my technique. I was using a construction 2 by 4.
Hey Elijah! I believe it was a 1/4" blade with 6 teeth per inch (TPI). A narrow blade allows tighter turns and curves than a thicker, stiffer blade. Regardless of blade, always go slow and make relief cuts if you need more room to make a turn. Good luck!
I love this! I like that you included your strubbles while you went! I've been switching to Shapr3D from Solidworks and I was having some mad stubbles and I left it out of my screen recording...but now I wish I hadn't. I really like seeing the whole process from you. Including the band saw errors. Also, yours looks waaay better than the original!
Thanks Liv! Glad you like them! Absolutely - I'm a big believer in showing mistakes as you go. It's so easy when someone is starting out to get intimidated by the people making tutorials never showing any mistakes, when we in fact all make them all the time! :) Good luck learning Shapr3D -I feel like I've heard good things from that too!
@@FarbulousCreations yes 100%! I feel like half the time when I make something it is a trial and error process! Haha. Shapr3D is gorgeously intuitive and simplistic but it does provide complexity in a simplified way. Like a lot of software that is streamlined and simplified, I find there are occasions where I want it to do something different and that isn't even an option. But it handled much of the quick aesthetic stuff much more easily than solidworks in a way. It's definitely fun to play with if you have the opportunity! I tend to use illustrator for my vectors and pop my dwg into whatever software I'm using so it was cool watching you basically do that in a subtractive way!
Awesome video! Just stumbled on your page and your skills on AI are amazing! I'm looking to learn AI but can't find any really good info on how to do exactly what you did.
Haha, thanks. It just comes with using it for a long time - I don't know that I could explain what needs to be done prior to doing it... you just sort of find yourself at a fork with every design decision asking yourself... okay this is what I'm trying to achieve... what is the best tool within the software to get me there the fastest. That can be true for any software though. :) Cheers!
as long as you can cut both dimensions on your bandsaw, you can make them whatever heights you want! I think my bandsaw is limited to 6" of cutting height, so mine were about that "wide" but ended up being close to a foot tall. Hope that helps! Cheers!
Hey there Alex, so sorry - looking in my system I think I see which email signup was yours. I have no idea why that happens on occasion. I'll send it to you now manually. :)
Hey there! Thank you! I'm glad you liked my updated reindeer! Also a big thanks for the heads up about my website; looks like my card had expired with my hosting and I needed to update it! All working now!! :)
You’re very welcome!! Good luck! The scroll saw could be tricky on the taller dimension since you’re going through so much wood but if you scale the design down so that you’re making much smaller ones, I’m sure you’ll be fine. Let me know how it goes!! Cheers!
@@FarbulousCreations yes I assumed I’d have to scale down! Exactly. I signed up to your site (cannot wait to try more things) but have yet to receive the free pattern for these. Is that still available?
@@allisonhodge4576 Yes totally still available! Let me take a look in my system to see if you got emailed the plan. If not I'll see if I can send it manually!
unfortunately the url your mailer sends out it totally broken for the template. The placeholder 'url_here' isn't replaced so the download will never work. :( No Reindeer for me.
Hey Andy! Unfortunately that happens in a rare number of cases (a few per month) and I haven’t been able to track down the reason. I’ll see if I can find your submission and send it manually. Sorry for the trouble. 😅
I do love this, however, I applied for a pattern but nothing arrived. Perhaps I was too late, such a shame as I would have loved to create something like this.
Neato video!! I'd like to try this! I'm curious what are the dimensions of the blocks of wood, particularly how thick?? Also its seems like the darker walnut lends itself to the reindeer better aesthetically huh? I think I will try the walnut too.
Thanks, glad you liked the video! I believe the block of wood for the maple one was roughly 10.75" x 5.25" x 1.5". The walnut one I don't remember for sure, but I believe the board was just over 1" thick, so it was probably around 8.5" x 3.75" as a block. Walnut definitely has the right color palette for a reindeer, but I honestly think any wood would work - I'd love to see one in cherry or mahogany, maybe even a spalted wood? Sky's the limit!
Hey, thanks so much for your interest, unfortunately I don't make and sell these, at least right now. Though if you're interested in making one yourself I have the template available for free on my website! 😊
Those are beautiful, thanks for sharing the build process and all the work that went into creating the template. I enjoy seeing all the variations on the bandsawn reindeer that are out there. It's nice to see everyones take on this scrap wood project that makes a great holiday gift.
Thanks for the super-kind words! You are so welcome! Yes, it's a very fun project, and I do think I'll do what I said and find time to make a couple every year to help myself get into the holiday spirit. :) Cheers!
@@FarbulousCreations I try to make a couple every year to give to friends and family. I make a version much different than your which now feel so simplistic after I see the reindeer you have created. But I have stylized them to something unique and I am sure everyone adds their personal touch to a project like this. I sign mine on the bottom of a foot with the year, you should consider doing something similar in a inconspicuous spot if you don't already. Else 10 years from now you'll have people wondering who made them and when.
