This video inadvertently helped me solve a many years long issue the company i work for has had. Just the idea that an endmill with more flutes has a larger core size and thus is a more ridged tool to use. Changed from a TiAlSiN coated 1/2 inch 4 flute Guhring only able to contour two 5/8 carriage bolt holes without throwing sparks and scraping the endmill. to a 5 flute 1/2 inch AlCrN coated redline able to contour 36+ holes with not a spark yet, a glossy finish and a way faster cut time!! Shes still cutting!! Thanks Titan!

you could include more quantitative data in these videos to drive home the point that the increase in work done offsets the cost of the spindle and other wear items. Quantifiable results would make it hard for people to ignore your results

it always facinates when the machine can handle the vibrations from the tool(and even nullify the vibrations) and you can push the tool more good stuff good stuff 👍

It was so nice to see 316ss again. We all love the titanium, inconel, and monel videos but I bet 316ss is far more common in most shops. I cut a lot of 316ss and I'm always amazed how slow people run on forums, and how slow mfg s&f charts recommendations are. My fusion template for a 316ss part: Helical Tools : 500SFM 1/2" 5 FL 1.25" DOC 8% radial 0.0073" ipt (~140 ipm). Okuma M560. Spindle load is less than 30-35% generally. It would be awesome to see more Cat40 spindles. I love a Cat50 hogging, but not nearly as common

Those factory recommendations are probably set low, so the rigidity and spindle can keep up if you are running a 30k Haas. But with the machine you are running, the spindle and rigidity are undoubtedly much better, so if you showed the load and data on the rigidity, it would help apply to all machines and setups.

Better yet do the math and tell us the go/torque of the cut, that way it can easily be translated to other machines with different curves/ratings

There was nothing exciting to show, we have the same machine with 6000 rpm gearbox spindle and we use 125mm fast feed roughing mills all day long on 4140 steel. These have feeds based on machines limits, about 120-140% spindle load😎

So can it go this fast drilling holes and making more intricate parts? I used to be a CNC operator I miss it and want to get back into it. I drive a dump truck now but LOVE CNC it's more like an obsession

I`d love to have machines like that in my workplace plus of course tools for the material you`re cutting ^^, but we have to make due with older machines and mostly all purpose tools. I always try to get them to their max, but the sacrifice is tool life sadly. Nice to see that something like this is possible. I hope to work like this in the future

Being so young in this field, Ill be getting my associates in a few months. sometimes it makes me a bit overwhelmed the kind of work Ill be jumping into with not too much experience outside of college. I love this industry so much, but there is just so much information. any tips for younger folks? I am 20 years old.

You say you have some education. Is it machining related? How much do you know already? If you understand basic things like work offsets, tool offsets and work coordinates then you'll have a leg up on the guys walking in off the street. If you have a grasp of those concepts from day one you can ask the guys training you how to do things specific to the machines you are working on. While all machines have work coordinates, but not all of them are set the same way. Learn the way that your shop does things. If you're lucky the shop will have some sort of standard way of doing a set up. That makes it easier to learn. I have an example from my own career. When I got hired at my current shop I had zero experience with Citizen Swiss machines. I had worked on Star Swiss machines prior to this. The machines are similar in function and even in structure in many ways. I didn't know anything about the control on the Citizen machines either. They are Cincom controls specific to Citizen machines. All I had used up to this point was FANUC controls. I spent about a week shadowing the Swiss department lead watching how they do they set up process in the department. For the first 3 days I didn't even ask a question. I just watched. On the 4th day I started asking questions. At that point I understood the how, but I wanted to understand they why of the process. The next week I did my first setup a Citizen machine. My point is that seeing how the process works and knowing the right buttons to push in the right order is important, but knowing the why it's done that way is far more important.

I work at an engine plant for the big 3. We run tools hard to get the cycle times down on the CNC's. The more engines you make at good quality is the money. Tool costs are almost nothing when you can get crazy output at quality.

I work a CnC Bandsaw and i can say it's really exciting to make fast and very clean cuts. with less than 1 thou deviation (measured by the saw so take that with a particle of a grain of salt).

Got a 1” one of these a month ago blasting 96 ipm talking 3” depth of cut. We got the thru spindle coolant one though.

Great test video, but recommended SMM=70 for SS. I did 130 with some random tools in ER holder. But smaller ae to be honest, but it was 12 mm endmill

I'm confused. I pretty much run all my Helical endmills at 400sfm in 6AL4V and they last forever. This isn't just a Kennametal thing lol

Don’t be confused. I have been running at 400-500 SFM on RU-vid for a decade. If your full axial and have a 10-15% radial… then your doing great. It’s also about the chip load… my IPT is high at .0047+ and it’s an 8 flt tool that also makes it even faster. Anyways, all good. Have a Blessed night. Titan

@@TITANSofCNC usually I take the highest axial depth of cut allowable by the part, 10% radial. My usual rule of thumb to start with is 1.5% of the tool diameter chip load for rouging and .5% for finishing and it tends to work well for me with my 6 flute endmills. Thanks for the reply

I love your experimental attitude. Yes the machine will wear out , Yes the tool will wear out. But how much profit did you make wearing your machine out? That tool can last 20+ years if you don’t use it. But the lights went out “You went out of business “ long before that!

that's all nice, but what happened to the cutter ? at least after making the two parts in question. And how long will it last if it is put into series production? So these modes are good, but too expensive. there's only a time advantage here

2:30 What is the downside to more flutes? If more means a thicker and subsequently stiffer/stronger core why dont endmills have 30 flutes?

The more flutes the smaller the chip gullet. The smaller the chip gullet the smaller the feed per tooth. There is a point where more flutes is just counter productive.

How exactly can you tell that the tool will last off of one test? Wouldn't you have to do multiple cuts with measurements to track tool wear?

so how do you come up with the F&S that are well over the red line of the calculators? Without taking a chance on the FA part, this is difficult to just turn it up when you do not have spindle time for development.

I beleive the tool manufactures base their speeds off the cutter spending 50% of the revolution engaged in cut (full slot) so dropping down to 10% side load drops how long the cutter is engaging and the heat that goes with it. I like to start at 40% more speed than recomended off a website if 10% side load is used as a rough rule of thumb, and ajust from there depending on how long I want the tool to last and how reliable i want it to be.

Is the flute tool supposed to have those divet looking things on the flutes? The job I just started 2 odd months ago as a machinist trainee instead of machine operator like I used to be for 4yrs at a previous job which didn't teach us terms / jargon ,uses similar toolings and I haven't seen em having the sideways divets on the flutes on em.

Those divets are staggered on each of the flutes. They help to keep the chip made by any give flute shorter.

I think every young/new machinist really needs to understand the concept of radial chip thinning. I believe most manufacturers are expecting the machinist to take this into account. Plug their recommended IPT into a chip thinning calc, they're everywhere. You get an ipt of .0042, still, a little less than Titan's .0047. Once you start making real chips, you're able to pull the heat generated in the cut out with the chip, saving your tools and allowing you to increase your surface footage. .0025 IPT at 10% just seems too close to rubbing for roughing.
