Great idea! We have several articles on starting a nursery. That can take 2-5 years. There are several ways to shorten the time to break even or profit. We will be sure to get a video out about some ideas to get to profitability sooner.

Good rundown. Might I suggest a starting from scratch series, numbers are great but showing a simple few steps to getting some cash in is worth it's weight in gold.

Thanks! Oh yes, we do have some articles about starting from scratch on our website. We have to do the videos as well.

Larry and Martha: This is an excellent video. it really provides an overview of what it takes to start a nursery like yours. Many things to consider: initial investment, physical effort, space, growing times for various plants, etc. You've given viewers like myself a lot to think about before making a decision whether to try a nursery or not. I'll be watching this video several times. The information and links on your website are very helpful as well. Well done!

Thanks again! We have a 6 part and ongoing series on how to get started. Step by step. Starting a nursery is not for everyone but you can start small and see how you do and if you like it. We started with just 100 plants. We would encourage you to give it a try. Thanks, Larry 🌲🌲🌲

@@Growing-Our-Retirement Larry: I like the idea of a backyard nursery, and growing plants is a great hobby that could potentially be a good retirement job for sure. However, my concern is that I'm not a very good salesperson (I'd be a terrible used car salesman) so being able to sell what is grown in the nursery would be the big issue. Lots to consider without question. I grow mainly woody plants that are native to my area.

This is a great topic and we are working on a video for this. There are 2 sides to selling plants, growing plants people want to buy and getting the word out. You can look at what others are selling and probably do well selling similar. If you are growing native plants, this is in demand and you could specialize. Getting the word out can be as easy placing some good ads on Marketplace. People are always looking for plants at reasonable prices. No used car sales techniques required. Being helpful and knowledgeable is far more important than anything else. We do find having some nice signs, tags, availability sheets, etc are helpful. It also takes some time to build up repeat customers. Treat people fairly and they will come back.

Thanks! Getting videos done is harder than running a nursery! The backyard nursery community is great and maybe we can share what we do to help others. You and a few others have been an inspiration to us! Always learning! Hope others join in and grow plants at home to sell. Buying local was the way it was until giant companies began to dominate. Lots of room for us local growers!

Plants are a great side hustle, with a little care and attention it can be quite lucrative. I have a lemon cypress growing tall in my garden, saw them about 18” high in pots at local Asda selling for £12 each 👀💡£££££

Yes, exactly! Growing out small plants or rooting cuttings to grow out has a 4 to 10 times profit potential. It can be real work but also profitable. Hope you continue on 🌲🌲🌲

I appreciate the idea. My stumbling block is "Would I sell it, how and what if and so on".
@Growing-Our-Retirement
@Growing-Our-Retirement Год назад
The would I, can be answered by just growing a few more plants than you need. How can be as simple as friends, family and a little ad on Marketplace. How much, just stay a little less than the garden centers but not too low. Good luck 🌲🌲🌲

@@Growing-Our-Retirement thank you very much for taking time to reply. I'll keep following your ideas. I might try to sell some roses, I had success propagating them. For some reason, in my mind giving away is good, and selling is not so good.

I started my backyard nursery recently. Propogating arborvitae last year and ready to pot them up this spring. Propogating a lot of other things this spring. Love to hear how others are starting theirs and what they are doing

When propagating plants make sure it is not patented. Plant patents are good for twenty years.
@Growing-Our-Retirement
@Growing-Our-Retirement Год назад
That is a very good point. I think we mention that on our website. We do grow a few patented plants but pay the royalty when we buy the liners. Those can’t be propagated further just sold. When rooting cuttings, we only use plants that are not patented. Thank you!
@nativegardenangel

@@Growing-Our-Retirement - I follow the same in my nursery, I just did not want anyone to think you could just buy plants and propagate them. Many do not know that plants can have a patent. Enjoying your content!

Hi, no we grow mostly woody trees and shrubs so we don’t need a greenhouse. We do use some totes for propagation but that’s all. Thanks 🌲🌲🌲

Grabbing plants from Home Depot, propagating, and having that is cash or free money is certainly a way to make money. However, anything over $500 is a business and must be registered in most states then there are USDA regulations and finally God forbid you propagate and sell a plant that has been patented! Now you’re really breaking the law. I know people do this all the time, but so few videos I have seen on this subject bother to mention this. As for buying seedlings and reselling, legitimate wholesalers don’t sell to individuals, only businesses. This can also be a hefty investment for some people. To buy in bulk it’s not like buying 20 or 30 plants it’s more like 200+300 plants.
@Growing-Our-Retirement
@Growing-Our-Retirement 11 месяцев назад
Hi Thanks! You bring up some great points. We cover them all in our videos and especially on our website. If you are legitimately going into business you will need to form a legal entity of some sort, corporation, LLC, sole proprietorship. You will need to report your sales and net profit. Each state is different but many do require you collect sales tax as well. Each state has requirements to sell plants. You can grow all you like but to sell many states require a registration and even inspections. We became licensed when we started selling. We go into the patented issue in some videos and on our website. We cover the difference between patents and trademarks. Fortunately there are so many plants that are not patented. We have never had a problem in this area and still so many plants we could propagate before running into any of the patented hybrids. That said we have bought patented plants to grow out and sell. You pay the royalty when you buy the small plants. It’s typically $0.25 to $0.50 per plant. You can grow these plants out and sell them but you cannot propagate them and sell them. Agree some liner/transplant growers won’t sell small quantities. Only a few seem to care if you are a business. This of course may also depend on what you are buying and from who. We buy from 2-3 of the largest and have no problems buying plants by the hundred. Some we buy from will sell 10-25 quantities but the prices go through the roof. Appreciate your comments. Hard to cover everything in every video. For those who seriously want to get started they should watch all our videos, watch other people’s videos, read through our website and also others. There is lots to learn, many different situations but so much information available. 🌲🌲🌲
