Making My First Watch - WILL MY WATCH WIND? Vlog #17

Watchmaking Vlog Episode 17
I am in the process of making my first watch, and document the journey in these watchmaking vlogs. In this watchmaking episode I make the final recesses to test if the winding mechanism including the keyless works is going to work in my first watch that I’m making by hand. This movement is based on the Swiss made ETA 6498.
I make the stem lever screw recess and all the bridge screw shoulders. I make the watch screw shoulders with a special D-bit tool I made shown in George Daniels Watchmaking Book.
I cannot explain how happy I am that all this time and effort I’ve spent creating my watch so far has this part successful. It has come with a lot of ups and downs. But I think soon my watch prototype phase 1 will be finished, and I will be one step closer in producing a final production watch piece.
I'm getting closer every video to completing making the movement for my first watch. I am using a Swiss made ETA 6498 as the base movement, and making my own bridges for now. I will hopefully be one day a watchmaker in my own right, making hand made watches.
My watchmakers lathe that I have been using this whole process of building my watch is the Cowells CW90 Watchmakers Lathe.
Cheers,
Dean DK

Hi hey Dean it is nice to see you and yes be here. We are actually refurbishing 24 chucks right now but several are the one watch plate holder types like you are machining on right now, thought we could share a moment with you Dean, as we are still gearing up to do what it is you are doing now, machining watch parts. That has to feel really GREAT to accomplish this feat. You were looking quit excited and we enjoyed this. Thank you for the shared video, Lance & Patrick.

One of the good things about youtube is showing that the dedicated amateur can approximate what they want. Personally, if I ever get around to it, I want to replicate a Waterbury skeleton watch. I am not really mechanically inclined, but finding channels like this really make it feel like it's within the realm of possibility. So I've followed and am glad you're back onto making this watch.

Great job Dean. I wish I was doing the same when I was your age. Fast approaching 60 now, and started my machining hobby some 3-4 years ago. I feel its too late (with aging eye sight) to start making watches, but my plan is to make watch cases, and put mechanical movements in them. I have a Schaublin 22 milling machine that I have restored and recently bought a Schaublin NVM 102 that also needs work. These machines gives me so much joy, creating things in metal. It is really great to follow you towards your goal, and to see your enthusiasm. Keep working and you will achieve your goals
@DeanDK

Thanks so much for you comment Arnljot! I am so glad to hear your story of starting you machining hobby! I think there are still ways in the way of magnification to help! I wouldn't think there is any harm in actually trying if that's your goal too! They are amazing machines, and you must have a deep connection after restoring them, I know I would. Keep it up 👍😀

Mike hmmmm it’s hard to say mike, I have spent years acquiring my tools some old some second hand. Made a lot of mistakes buying tools which were wrong, or didn’t need, or didn’t work out as intended.. probably a big initial cost is the lathe.. my is from Cowells Uk and they have their pricing info online. @DeanDK

This Guy not too personal at all! I think at the moment this watch is more of a prototype. And I’m just going to keep going until I achieve what I envision for my first watch, and I will choose to sell those finished products. But definitely keep all this history to reaching that place

Great work, smooth sounding click. I am not very familiar with this movement. You fabricated the barrel bridge and have it mounted on the original bottom plate so click and ratchet wheel are mounted on top of bridge, barrel under bridge?

Really nice work! congratulations! I have a question about your microscope. How do you like it? Did you make all the centering of the wheels with that? I am using the old wobble stick and it’s really time consuming to get a perfect result. Another thing is they are a little bit hard to get in Germany I didn’t find a distributor but there is currently one on RU-vid. I would love to hear your opinion. Keep it up!
