Watch me begin making my hydraulic press improvements to my Harbor Freight 20 ton shop press. Most of us asked ourselves how to make a hydraulic press better than the way they come out of the box. The improvements and modifications to come are not your typical DIY flavor. I will be using CNC Machines, computer software to design components and burning tons of time and money on this thing, but hey, if you like that sort of thing , go for it! I will take it too far, it's inevitable. In this Part 1 video, the foundation is built by making the most important element, the work surface followed by improving the goofy press plates that come standard with the press, gone are the days of doing a balancing act on the beam.
Leave me a comment on what you think about it and let me know what you have done to yours!
Now go check out Part 2 if you liked this video. I take this press to a whole new level!

Wish I had seen this video sooner. I had a press exactly like this and this sure would have helped me a lot. Well done.

Wow that’s nice. I don’t have the machines you have but wanted to solve the same problem. I installed four 1/4 roll pins into each plate between the I- beams.They’re squared up and can rotate all four directions. They can also just be slide to the side or lifted off. I flush mounted them to the top of plate so if I need to off center something I can turn them over. Kind of fast and dirty but effective . Not nearly as nice as your solution though. Great work👍🏼
@nubtools
@nubtools 2 года назад
Hey that’s a great solution!! 👏🏻🔥 I like that a lot. When you don’t have the resources get resourceful! Thanks for watching!

Just be careful. Making holes on the plates between the beams weakens the already marginal plates. Check them in a regular basis to make sure they’re not bending from those spits, or cracking. I’ve seen that happen when holes are drilled there. It’s best to drill holes into the edges and screw short plates to hold them from the outside of the beam.

I didnt go near as extravagant. I just drilled 4 dowel centering holes in the original plates.

How perpendicular is the ram to press plate surface? I have never seen anyone address this before doing other improvements. I am not saying it is off but it is made in China.

Never checked. Didn’t want to know.

I hope you don't plan on pressing anything fairly hard with the stock plates. They like to explode. This is a sweet setup and I could see tons of uses for it. Maybe might want to make yourself a real set of plates though just to be on the safe side of things.
@nubtools
@nubtools 2 года назад
Explode! Wow, thanks for the heads up. Do you know if the ones you had that blew up were cast iron? Just curious. These that I have are definitely steel. Thanks for watching and your comment! -Dave

@@nubtools I don't own one yet but there are quite a few vids on the subject. In fact, swag off road came out with a plate set for us non machinist types. They're pricey but really worth it. I have used this press in the past with good results but only pressing axle bearings and such. No idea what the material is really. Not something I want to have happen to me or anyone for that matter.
@nubtools
@nubtools 2 года назад
For sure! I’ll check it out. Thanks!

Dang, I looked into the exploding plate issue! The ones that were exploding were cast iron which makes common sense and was a complete fail on Harbor Freight’s part. Obviously Harbor Freight caught wind of this and started producing them out of steel.🤦‍♂️ Mine was purchased maybe 6 months ago and has the new revisions. 👍
@nubtools
@nubtools 2 года назад
Yup HF got the memo. These I have are good to go. It’s crazy that those cast iron ones ever made it out the door.

You left out all the surface grinding footage…. In fact you didn’t even mention it being done! Nice job, professional craftsmanship on the parts and the little details set your work apart.
@nubtools

Thank you. Ya it didn’t work out getting the footage. I had the grinding done by another shop and it just didn’t work out. And you are right I dropped the ball by not talking about it. Still trying to figure out this whole video production thing.😅 Thanks for watching!

Did you ever consider Cold Bluing the metal surfaces? Especially with that nice finish they would look great and all you would need to do is oil them occasionally. Actually what's really impressive is your shops tooling, it's like watching "Tim the Tool Man".

@nubtools Год назад
No not the cold process. But I kind of like the contrast. 😂
