‘Making New Years Day’ documents a day in the recording studio with renowned bass players Chuck Rainey and Mike Brignardello along with some of Nashville’s top musicians. Brignardello and Rainey team up with drummer Greg Morrow (Bob Seger, Sheryl Crow) and keyboard player Steve Nathan (Mark Knoffler, Keith Urban), to deliver a funky rendition of Brignardello’s song, ‘New Years Day’.
Chuck Rainey is a veteran of countless hit records throughout his four-decade studio career. His work with Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Joe Cocker, Michael Jackson, Joe Walsh, Roberta Flack, and many others is legendary. Mike Brignardello has played bass on hundreds of records with artists as diverse as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Faith Hill, Blake Shelton and Jewel.
Filmed at Sony Studios in Nashville, the band features the unusual line up of drums, keyboards and two bass players. Rainey’s percolating bass part underpins Brignardello’s lean melodies while Morrow and Nathan cook up a funky undertow. Inspired by an annual dinner hosted by bass-phenom Victor Wooten, ‘New Years Day’ is equal parts Memphis soul and California cool.
Brignardello, Rainey and company make the recording process look like fun. And that fun is deep in the grooves of ‘New Years Day’.
