That's the kind of project the home owners should of done.... Nah..., we'll just hire it out hunny. Not the same as when you can say " I built that!"... Instead, he just hands out a card from these guys! You guys rock!
Love the laminated timbers. Reminds me of the keels on Navy minesweepers, wooden hulled vessels still in use today. Laminated timbers are incredibly strong and beautiful. Darlington, South Carolina

At first I was like, cool, I'd like to see how it's done. Then I saw the robot router arm thing and was like "yeah ok... nothing for us mere mortals to make"
Everything that robot arm did you could do with a mallet and chisel (and a circular saw if you wanted a bit of a speed boost). Looks like you could simplify this slightly (replacing the curved braces with straight) and building it in a very traditional timber framed way. It would less graceful, but it would still look good, and be functional. I was more impressed by the huge gluelam form, and was thinking that was the thing that would prevent me from replicating this. Ohh that and anywhere to put it, though it would look nice over the sandbox for the kids.
Glulam products are beautiful, I agree. I used to work at a factory that specialized in glulam products, but on a MUCH larger scale. That robot took all the fun out of cutting the ends and drilling all the holes.
lignum how do you transpose the scale of the blueprints to actual scale? I saw how you made the blocks and how you were measuring I just was wondering how you got the measurement to plot on the plywood template. thanks for the reply!
Great design, as always on this channel. You should contact Baufritz or Huffhaus, as this design would really compliment their big glass chalet designs, especially with solar panels on top.
Never mind that the wood structure probably cost a small fortune (75K my estimate), but consider also the cost of the two below grade concrete ballast connections that are keeping that top heavy artsy contraption from tipping over! There goes another 50 thousand dollars (remember, professional civil engineering is involved, and that’s not cheap!)
😁if only.. I'd be a multimillionaire by now.. I sell it for around 8 k euros depending on the transport distance from the shop within my country. Assembly included if not too far away..
I noticed you don’t joint one side of your boards first , but rather, just send through planer. Is that correct? How do you ensure both opposing sides are flat and parallel? U do amazing work. Thanks
when making glulam beams, jointing is not necessary because glue tolerates imperfections in the surface up to 0.4 mm. It's special glue designed for the glulam industry and has some other properties like fire resistance that other glues don't. Planing ensures parallel surfaces (if knives are correctly positioned) with surface variations much less than mentioned 0.4mm.
All that beautiful woodworking and they they ruin it with those metal bases. At least give the metal some design elements or curve shape. I was in awe of the process then the final product looks cheapened by those squares at the bottom. Those robot arms I have never seen super cool. Now get them to cut some curves in that metal. Like follow the curve with the metal...
TIL about Glulam. In my country where wood is an expensive building material. Compared to concrete and steel which are more common. If you were going to build a structure that looks exactly this. The Gulalam would be much prettier though.

To be honest with you I felt a bit strange after that comment, ( you might say a bit rosy cheeked ) but anyway, it's not everyday I get that sort of weird inspiration, THANK GOD! Again, as for the carport, you are most welcome sir! I would sure love to have one like that or even incorporate it in house design. It is true ART!
I use two component melamine glue from akzo nobel. It is designed specially for gluelam because it doesn't lose it's properties during high temperatures in case of fire.
It's so easy when things are done by a machine. Even an 80 year old man blind in one eye can build this carport with a machine. All they did was screw everything together 🤣
This is unreal. How much do you think your cnc robot guy is necessary vs a luxury? Could you have done this project (for a reasonable price) without it?
I bought the robots around two years ago. Before that I made probably a couple of dozen of this particular model with regular tools and jigs. I see it as a time saver mostly because I used to have to completely assemble the carport first in the shop to be sure everything fits properly, then second time on it's designated position. Now I don't have to. I also see it as a back saver because I used to plane the arches on a planer machine and moving them a couple of dozen times trough a planer is really hard. Tbh, if I only made one I would never do it with a robot, much faster by hand . It takes much more time to make programs, plan the positioning for each piece, prepare the mounting table etc.. not to mention mistakes, and they always happen, a lot of trial and error..
