Making Paint Brushes to put a true unique touch on your art journaling mark making is a fun project. I love to make my own supplies and when these supplies are tools, there is tremendous gratification. I love pulling out a paintbrush that I made to utilize on my projects.
Brushes can be made from a lot of different materials, sable, camel, hog, squirrel hair are all used in brush production. I'm utilizing my horses tail. There are also lots of synthetic fibers that would work great if you wanted to make your own - I'm thinking about those color swatches for hair dye that is shown on synthetic hair - wigs, etc. Pieces of frayed jute, string, etc and plants would make interesting mark making tools that you could utilize.

What a great idea! When I go back home this summer to Ohio, I will need to give my brother's horse, Marley a trim!!! I can just hear my relatives now! They are always surprised by the things I like to collect. TFS. 💌🙏

I’m fortunate to have a horse! 😂For interesting mark making anything goes but maybe not go to the trouble of waxing. Grasses, string/jute, etc! We use to trim her and save the hair for a potter-he would thrown small individual hairs into the pot when firing-he made me one with her hair. I’ve also used her hair in enameling jewelry for interesting marks--she has a resume of art🤷🏻‍♀️

That's so very cool! I grew up with horses. My Dad loved horses and we both rode until his arthritis got the better of him but I rode as long as we had horses and I was still at home. Actually helped him break a couple when he couldn't anymore and I was too young to know better!! Those brushes are great.

We have always had horses; as we have downsized homes and property we are down to 1. I think raising my children caring for the animals provided a good foundation as I’m sure you understand the work involved! I love to ride, don’t do it much anymore. Callie is pretty pudgy and out of shape….as am I-would probably be a good idea for us both😂

I’m using them for mark making, they clean up easily and hold a lot of water (horse hair) if you want to use it for watercolor. Just trim the brush into the shape you want!
