Today I completely destroyed my eyeshadow palettes to make/turn them into PAINT?! Watercolor paint to be exact. It was SO much fun and surprisingly works really well. I used my old Urban Decay palettes for this. They are expired and I no longer use them so in order to reduce waste I decided to upcycle them!

Hi all! As with anything like this - always wear a mask or respirator. If I had been using normal paint pigments or mica (that aren't made to go on your face) I would have. But I didn't since it's eyeshadow that gets put onto your eyes/gets powdery anyway. However, gum arabic is messy and I wasn't expecting it so definitely use it somewhere well ventilated and mask up (with a proper mask to prevent particles getting through) with it! Also, I probably could have done a little more research, others have informed me of some stuff I wasn't aware of since I just watched the tik tok videos where it worked great. I've had a lot of insanely busy stuff going on behind the scenes that I'll be able to reveal very soon, but for now I don't have a lot of time to film and edit let alone deep dive research more than what I did. I won't lie, I am not really enjoying filming right now. I don't have a proper studio set up like many of my friends do, I film in a walk in closet lol so the passion isn't fully there right now and if it shows, I'm sorry! Plus I'll always miss things - there will always be people who correct me to inform me of things I don't know! It's how I learn especially when people know more about a medium I've never used before, I'm going through a trial and error process and literally showing you that process. Most people don't film when they learn something new and I do so I'll always do things wrong! That being said, I respect that I have an audience watching so going forward I'll make sure I look into this paint making process/safety precautions more too, I just felt it was pretty harmless using a tik tok video to make eyeshadow into paint - if you've been here a while you know I'm not a tutorial channel/overly serious channel. But if it ever appears I haven't done my research, I do apologize for that!

Btw, I make handmade watercolors and sell them. The clove oil is a preservative to help prevent mold from the water mixing with the gum Arabic. The clove oil isn’t going to make your paints more archival or light fast like that poster said. 🤗 The pigment itself is what is light fast or archival, the light fastness cannot be changed. Some pigments like ochres and oxides can be super light fast, while micas that are in eyeshadow and such are made more with synthetic dyes and such that are not light fast.

As long as the colours haven't changed in terms of texture, gotten spotty or crusty, and the pans have rusted it will be fine to use. Legally they have to add an expiry date, but if you are the only one using the palette it shouldn't be an issue.

FYI: the tool that is used to combine the dry pigment into the liquid binder is called a muller, not a grinder. The muller is designed to separate all of the micro particles and help coat them fully in the gum arabic so they combine into a smooth paint, rather than actually grinding down the particles further. I went to a seminar on this a couple of years ago, lol!
@hkandm4s23
@hkandm4s23 3 года назад
For a good alternative to a paint muller, You can use a piece of glass from a picture frame as the base(much better than plastic) with a vase or glass with a totally flat bottom...... The plastic is probably preventing the pigment from grinding down and mixing properly. You can check if it's mulled enough but swatching it, letting it dry and rubbing the swatch with a paper towel. If pigment comes up you probably need to grind it more or adjust the mix. every pigment will take a different amount of binder and need a different amount of grinding. It takes a lot of experimenting😊 arleebean has some great introductory videos.

@OhHaiiLove 3 года назад
Also if you do this again, get a coffee/espresso tamper. It’s a cheap alternative to a muller that’s used to grind down pigments when making paint. You generally don’t use a mortar and pestle because it’s harder to scrape the paint out.

@@stolenzephyr I’m glad I could help! I started out making paints with a paper weight and a large piece of tile from my local hardware store 🤗 you don’t need super expensive stuff until you know it’s a hobby you want to commit to because it can be expensive. I’d definitely recommend the tamper over the paperweight because the paperweight is awkward to hold 🤣 you can also grab cheap micas and stuff off of Amazon or your local art supply store. Jacquard pigments are fairly easy to find and that’s what most people start with for mica paints.

@OhHaiiLove
@OhHaiiLove 3 года назад
@@coreymorse1347 back of a spoon won’t crush the pigments evenly or properly, it’s good in a pinch with minute amounts of pigment but if you want the best success you need two flat surfaces to grind the pigments between. The mortar and pestle would be a better alternative to the spoon.
@SurinaSlackArt
@SurinaSlackArt 3 года назад
Mixing watercolors into their binder can sometimes take hours of milling and not all pigments are created equal, some require much more pigment to binder ratio, some take less. Tbh considering how you just started and had limited supplies, you did really well! But if you were curious why the texture was weird, it's probably bc it may have required more grinding into the binder.

This may have been changed since the 90s, but (craft) glitter (used to be) is made from glass. I’ve cut my eye and had to wear an eye patch, and use a cream in my eye, for over a week 2 times. Both were from craft glitter and my dr, at the time, told me that it’s made from glass and that’s why it’s so dangerous for kids to play with it.

The amount of binder that you need depends on the pigment that you are using, and in particular, on the particle size. Honey acts as a humectant. Unless you live somwhere dry, you probably don't need it. If your paint is cracking as it dries, the honey will help with that.

I started making paint using just a plate from the dollar store and a paper weight as a muller and, while a very cheap set up, worked as well as the more expensive equipment I later invested in (even if with a bit more difficulty).

Arleebean makes watercolour paints mostly like the way you're doing it. She has lots of videos binding the pigment. She says that it takes times, if you mix everything like an hour or so, it will be more blended.

Me thinking while watching the video- Chloe's mom- what are you doing with makeup palette? Chloe- oh!! I am just scraping some makeup to make some paint and then make a beautiful Painting out of it. Chloe's mom- that's very weird tho! Chloe- ya I know! 😂😂😂 Ps - please don't be offended it was just a thought!

😭😭😂 Please try this video again but with the grinder please, it'll make all the difference! Also, I think the glass grinder people normally use are specific for paint making, the one you ordered might still not do quite the job.

I prayed on her making this video even tho I’m an atheist. IT ACTUALLY WORKED. But that’s just because she is one of the best RU-vidr’s ever and deserves more activity on her page!

The pigment might be repelling based on your palette! I would highly recommend using a plane of glass from a picture frame instead if you were to do this in the future. Love the video!

For anyone of you who wants to make paint with eyeshadows but does not have the Binder here is a little life hack : break down the compressed eyeshadow pigment with a dotting tool (this helps you break it finer ) add a little amount of PVA glue / Elmer's glue and mix with a paintbrush voila!!! now you have acrylic paint Hope this helps :)

the olive oil is a preservant, it makes it so that the paints dont grow mold over time, it has nothing to do with the actual lightfastness of the paint.

When I've done this, I've done my mixing with a toothpick in tiny jars. Then, I transfer it into half pans (or back into the eyeshadow pallette, if that's what I'm using as my pigment) and let it dry.

Hi my love espresso tampers are really good for making water colours which is what Emdoessketches uses to mull her watercolours! Also I think you add a little too much of the binder to some of them but the orange one looked perfect!

This is my favorite eyeshadow palette, they don’t make it anymore, so watching this video hurt me lol I do completely respect that it is expired and recycling it into a new purpose is a great idea, however! Great video!

The back of a spoon might have been a helpful tool for incorporating the color. And honestly just more space/room to mix.

I've done something similar, I've made iridescent watercolors using pigments from tkbtrading, which is a site for pigments to make makeup, but it's a lot cheaper, and doesn't have the extra additives, worked much better, and have made some awesome paintings on black paper.

The purple and the green colour has a little bit of glitter in it so when you use it on canvas or paper the glitter does not mix with the paint and turns kinda transparent. I had a glitter paint and when I opened it the glitter comes on the top and there is only little pigment and a lot of water.

I've followed that tiktoker for a while and she actually started with just a plastic lid as her muller and got great results before finally getting an official glass one. I like her because she makes the process so approachable And yes, like the other comments said, you use a muller not a grinder. It's just a flat object you press and swirl the paint with on a flat surface

For a pestle and mortar alternative, maybe use the back of a spoon in a dish, or an egg cup and the other end of a paintbrush, or the end of a rolling pin in a dish, or....
