Extremely impressive :) I'm refurbishing a south bend lathe that was my fathers and looking forward to learning with it.

Thanks for your comment. Check out my series on the South Bend 13 inch lathe restoration. You might find it interesting.

Beautiful job. Shows what can be done on the “wrong” machine when you’re in a pinch and need parts. You can slow down that saw for metal cutting with a VFD and 3 phase motor, with no loss of torque, to make it much more versatile for not that much money.

Yes, I have thought of this conversion for the wood band saw, but might just get a dedicated metal band saw… thanks for your comment

Hypnotic and calming to watch. I bet it does the same thing creating something. Thanks for sharing this George

Thanks for the comment.... my lack of the proper tooling made this project ... tedious...

Yes, when making stuff, I find it helpful to first determine all the steps. Less likely I mess something up. Thanks for your comment

Great to see you using the South Bend George, my wife's grandfather Knight Thomas owned a machine shop and welding shop and got me started in the business. When cutting Aluminum on the lathe or mill he would always have a little can of Kerosene and a small brush to apply it on the cutting surface. I have done the same in years past (when I was a young man) and it seems to work pretty good. It might not be the correct lube and I'm sure I will get some advice on what I should be using but thought I would pass it on. Keep up the good works George and thank you for sharing.

I ran a badly worn South-Bend in one shop that produced poor finishes and broke many cut-off blades when the spindle jacked up due to worn headstock bearings. I did not know how to rebuild the head and adjust the bearings back then by now I do, thanks to your excellent teaching videos.

What software/camera is letting you Slow down the Video? Would really like to see how to make a Skidoo/Rotax 277F / Rotax 277UL Crank. Made from 1978 to 2008. No replacement 277 cranks available.

Thanks for your comment. I used my IPhone for all the video. I do not understand the second part of your question.

You had me at the Snap Gage! IMO, the only accurate way to measure a bore. Yours look like Mitutoyo, which I believe are currently the best on the market. I’ve got both Mitutoyo and Starrett - I like the shorter handles on the Starrett, but I do think the quality on the Mitutoyo is slightly better. I also use a micrometer stand which increases my overall accuracy and speed.

When I saw you facing two parts at the same time 1:32 , I thought you would drill and bore the hole with the split line on center, saving the saw cut.
