An introduction to making pastels with Alex Warren, owner of Sinopia Pigments & Materials. Through a demonstration, Alex Warren will share how pastels are made from scratch and give an introduction to types of glues, pigments, and chalks that can be used.
Alex Warren grew up in Germany, went to high school in Nashville, TN, and received a BFA at SFAI in 1990. Alex founded Sinopia in 1995 in San Francisco, specializing in pigments and traditional artist's materials.

Alex turned me into an evangelist for pure pigment and casein paints. Now I make my own watercolors from found earths. He's got the most comforting voice I know.

What about white pastels and fixative....I can't find any fixative that doesn't eat the highlights.

Chalk and talc turn transparent when fixed or varnished. Bc comerical pastels have chalk as filler it gets affected when sprayed. I'm guessing you could make your own white pastel stick using pure pigment of titanium white and theoretically that wouldn't disappear.

why would you do a video showing the most expensive way to make a pastel ( the cellullose sure isn't cheap ! ) when people are trying to make pastels in order to save money ?

You can get cellulose (hydroxy methyl cellulose) at a home baking shop. Very cheap and the same stuff that's added to cake icing to make it pliable. I make most of my own pastels and had a long learning curve, the only expense really is the pigment.
