It just makes me so happy to see how much Bob enjoys his creation already. If you are reading this, i've been watching your videos for a few years now and love you and your channel so much. Your projects are really cool and satisfying to watch. You also seem like a great father and a wonderful person. Please don't ever change! I really hope there will be a part 5 soon. Anyway have a wonderful day everybody :)
Watching your assembly, it looked like you were using a lot standard nuts and not lock nuts (granted a lot of those shots were test fit assembly). You will find R2 vibrate a lot rolling along and non locking nuts have a bad habit of falling out at the worst of times, and like to find their ways into electronics and batteries too. Looking great and can’t wait to see more of your progress!
Great work Bob! A recommendation for your wiring - put a low voltage cut off just after your power switch so you don't discarge your battery too much. If they get charged to low they won't recharge again, effectivly killing the battery.
This is the perfect project; it's nerdy, there's making, electronics, problem solving, and computer programming, but above all it serves no purpose except to just make you smile... and I did when Bob got that dome spinning. Very happy for Bob (and slightly jealous), thanks for taking us along on the journey. I am sorry that we (my girlfriend and I) won't get to say "Hi" to Bob and Jenny this year at Makers Central now that it has been cancelled but hopefully we'll get to see ALL of the ILTMS team at Makers Central in 2021!!
Some idea for your controller: saw the shape and it really reminded me of a lightsaber. Maybe it would be possible to hide it in a lightsaber hilt once you are done, this way you could control your R2D2 "undercover"
@@Iliketomakestuff Stealth is definitely a benefit. I used SHADOW on my build of Hardware Wars' Artie Deco, and it's fun to make people wonder who is controlling him. Unlike when I had a giant 3d printed controller for him at Dragon Con, so everyone wondered if I was driving the nearby R2. It's also good for making people focus on the character (and stop asking to control it.) I'll be using it again on my R2.
@@aetherdyne oof. That feels a bit rude to ask for a go driving your thing, they probably can't do to much damage but still... That just has to be one of the things you never do
It made me smile when you said "I can't help but put the actual dome on here and just watch it spin." I remember when I was at that stage on my R2 and I did exactly the same thing. It was a milestone for me and a great feeling. Congratulations Bob, you're making great progress!
@@Iliketomakestuff Yep, but totally worth it in so many ways. Building it was a great experience and I learned a wide variety of new skills. Then after finishing it it's wonderful to show people (especially kids) and see their faces light up!
@@hpsorzmobile3828 As a patron I get to see the videos early on Patreon. Proud to be a patron of this channel. Bob, Josh and the whole crew deserve all of the support they can get!
I like what you are doing. Your builds are insane and i am also a builder. You are a inspiration for me. I have also a RU-vid channel where i build stuff. Feel free to take a look.
Loving your work on this R2 project and seeing it come together makes me want one of my own. I'm currently working on my collecting room and one of the features I would like is a powered sliding pocket door. Is this something you have tried/would be interested in trying?
Awesome update video! Glad to see all of the progress you have made in more detail. It is looking aweeeeeesome. I see a possible random amount of spinning R2 heads in the future...maybe blooper moments? Lol
Hey, sorry for the comment, but your explanation on the VPN is really misleading. The entire explanation relies on internet traffic being in plain text, which is not. TLS/SSL takes care of that for you. On a different side, should I trust more on a service I got offered online or the one that has been providing internet for the past years? I get that sponsors help content makers, and I support that. But this is false advertisement!
I recognise the grin that means, "I'm making a piece of Star Wars come alive!" Awesome work, Bob. Little R2 is coming together brilliantly. Any chance he could come to Makers Central 2021?! :-D
I feel like you got a lot done in this update to making R2 look really finished. I was so excited when i saw this video went up. Can't wait for the next update. :)
I know he says it everytime on this series how long everything takes with this project but man the work he put into this one has to be hardest yet. Having a lot of troubles and asking help from forums, that probably takes days to get answers! Can’t wait for it all to come together! 🙌🏻
Bob you look like a kid at christmas when you got r2's head to spin lol its always fun to watch someone build something that they are really interested in great video
It's people like this who makes me think we will have R2D2's around in not many years. Not even joking, I could see someone build a droid like this who could map rooms by doing 360s, take voice commands and so on, maybe even show hologram's like the one Princess Leia stored in R2D2.
Hey Bob! I'm at the point in my Astromech build where I'm ready to start putting all the electronics together. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the 20v battery you used. I'd like to use my Ryobi batteries in the same fashion and mine is a mix of styrene and 3D printed parts. Is it enough power to move R2 around? What's the longevity of each full charge and how often do you find yourself swapping out batteries?
Hi I know your more then likely be extremely busy but could you spare a little bit of time to help me with which Arduino parts will work. I've spent a year looking and asking but with no success. I'm not building a r2d2 project I'm building a different robot that moves talks and lights up so I believe it would be very similar to your r2d2. Thank you ive been looking at the shadow skip and diagrams but is show the MEGA going to a differnt board before it goes to the sound trigger, whiles in your video the MEGA goes stright to the trigger card could you please help me with this thank you
As a point of reference for future development (and more than likely something you may have already seen on Astromech) is potential future issues with Bluetooth control. I have a good friend who has built an R2 and has been using a Logitech Bluetooth controller for the past couple of years. He has discovered that when taking R2 out to conventions and other places with lots of people, he has found that the Bluetooth control is WAY less than reliable. He's actually had a couple of instances where R2 decided to go rogue, luckily not taking out a bystander in the process. But it has spooked him enough that he is in the process of converting to standard 2.4Ghz RC radio. Just food for thought if you are thinking about taking R2 out in a place with lots of folks (and potential interference).
Bob - One thing to double check is that your batteries have a low voltage cutoff. Some battery platforms have built in low voltage protection, but a lot do not. I'm not sure about Dewalt, but if they don't, you'll need to add one between your adapter and your 20 volt bus. Otherwise, you risk overdraining the battery, which in the case of lithium can destroy the battery.
Did they ever come out with plans that have actual dimensions on them like a blueprint? You'd think that in this day and age of Fusion 360 and CNC routers that they'd do that instead the "print full scale and glue down with contact adhesive" plans.
I have been building my 3d Printed R2 and started it about 2 years ago, he sat idle and now I am working on him again. Videos like yours is the kick in the ass I needed to get back to him. I also have many DeWalt tools and thing that is an awesome idea for the power source. How long do you think the the 20V 5AH battery last when driving him around?
If only it could swivel its head and focus on the nearest heat signatures, and follow the signal from something like a tile square. Then just program a few response phrases and you have a legit R2D2 without the need for a remote.
So cool... I'm only into converting a lightsaber toy into a metal one custom made but my question is what 3d printer you recommend for a beginner not so rich with the ambition of creating props for my green screen videos I really don't know where to start for the quality and the material to use... I already check your old video on that but maybe an update could be great thanks a lot you inspire me a lot
Hey Bob, since you have all these awesome boards and stuff inside him anyway, maybe you should place the boards you need to modify into the access panels so that when they open, they have more than just empty space, they have real circuit boards and stuff. Just an idea!
vpn is good and all, but a vpn provider still get's your information, and they know the incription stuff. so they basically work as an isp at that point.
I had non-stop issues with my Move controller. Would work perfectly fine at home and other places, but as soon as I took it to the shops or a hospital, it was so temperamental. I think it was due to the wifi in the buildings.
Just what I needed this morning, coffee and Bob totally Geeking out and that put a smile on my face as you are having a blast working on the R2-D2project which is coming along very nicely. Thank you for the smiles
