Making Randomised Arpeggiator Patterns on the Digitakt

I was going to hold off on doing Digitakt tutorials until I'd explored it more thoroughly, but I came across a fun little trick that I thought I'd share.
Using this trick you can put together an "arpeggiator" style pattern that plays constant 16th notes, but varies each time it repeats. In the video we look at the 3 key concepts in the Digitakt's sequencer that lets us put this pattern to use.

You sir, are a bad bad man. Owned the Digitakt since it was released, and still keep learning new ways to keep things spicy. Wonderful. 👏

This is a great little trick. I've pretty much been adding this to a lot of my tracks and it really makes you learn the conditionals really well which has also leaked into evolving percussive patterns. The Digitakt is really something special.

Your videos are exactly what I've been looking for, its brought me into the next level of trig wizardry, a lot of which I wouldn't have thought of on my own. The retrigs and probability really work hand in hand, until now I rarely used retrig. Been specifically wanting an arp on the digitakt too so this is an awesome workaround. This video and the shaker one are top notch. Subbed

Whoa. I'm so glad I bought one last Cyber Monday and decided to keep it after getting frustrated with it after a month and almost sold it and so sooo glad the buyer backed out last minute and I went back to the machine and created an awesome beat within 10 minutes and then I kept sampling free drum hits and crazy loops I found online and letting it rest for a few days. Then I go back into it and push myself like I'm lifting weights at the gym - I can't use it every day but every time I go back to it, my music gets stronger.

You can use this idea in a similar manner where instead of using retrigs you can set the note length to really long. I have set up 2 bars or so with a different note every quarter with the length of the note to be infinity. Use the same probability trick. This way the note plays until it's taken over and it can make for some really nice drone control. There were a couple samples in the JUNO VHS sample pack that worked really well with this.

Nicely done Oscillator Sink I have been wanting one of these for ages, but it is better to listen to its sonic potential in your very capable hands. Look forward to more complete music by you with this instrument. Would like a demo on the midi and sample links it can control. I expect you are now saving for overbridge.
@OscillatorSink

The Digitakt is great. It definitely helps me get up and running quickly coming from the Digitone, but there's still lots to learn! Good news is that Overbridge is free now, so I'll get that and have a play soon, but I'm kinda enjoying it in "strictly stand alone" mode - the whole joy of hardware is not turning the computer screen on!

@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 5 лет назад
It's a combination of maths and magic and I like both of those things. Have you looked at the "Step Components" implementation on the OP-Z though? It's kinda amazing and does some stuff that takes some of the ideas that they've clearly "borrowed" from Elektron and expands on them on some really interesting ways. Jeremy (Red Means Recording) just did a video on them if you need a primer. I'm certainly in favour of Elektron "borrowing" some of those ideas back...

@@OscillatorSink Had a Didgitakt for a year, then an AR joined the family. Although I'm still only learning it, there really are great sounds to be had and a Mark 1 can be picked up for relatively cheap. Be aware that the audio inputs are disappointing (low input impedance on Mk1 and no way to control parameters).
@GrootsieTheDog
@GrootsieTheDog 5 лет назад
Random arps are pretty much all I use. Layer a few of them and it becomes a sort of rhythmic drone to improvise over. I'm really into what I call hybrid generative - where I try to create a balance between music that "makes its self" and music that I control.

Cosmo Spacemonkey You are speaking my language too. The Elektron A4 is a dream machine for this kind of exploration but you have to know that it does not have the specific retrig feature that Digitact, Octatrack and Analog Rytm have. Of course you can end up to the same results using its fantastic LFOs ( four per track!) and the conditional trigs of course. One more thing you must have in mind is that A4 's sequence does not send midi out. Only cv. That means that if you are thinking of using the wonderful Electron sequencer in order to midi drive your other gear you have to check Octatrack, Digitakt or Digitone. Chears!
@benjaminstalder5273
@benjaminstalder5273 4 года назад
Thanks for this great tip! I tried to get the same effect but avoid repeating notes: take 2 tracks with the same sample and trigger on alternating steps. E.g track one triggers on 1..3...5, track 2 on 2...4...6. Set retrigs on 1/8. Like this you get that randomness without repeating notes.
