Could you do a video on your take on how to get the 90's rap vocal sound? I have always enjoyed it, and think it sounds the most natural, though maybe a tad dull in the top end, but in a very smooth, pleasing way. I've tried recreating it, but can't quite nail it and would appreciate your input. The albums that best represent the sound I'm thinking of are Enter The Wu Tang (36 Chambers), The Slim Shady LP, Me Against The World, Illmatic, The first 3 A Tribe Called Quest Albums, GangStarr's stuff, and Ready To Die. They all seem to have a common sound in the approach to the vocals that I really like.

Always great to see the process! I also really like mastering compressors on vocals. It seems that since they're setup to be transparent you can push them pretty hard if you need to.

I've been using that C6 lately when mixing the rap vocals on the 2 track beats since you made that suggestion. Not only does it help get some opening up to find a space within the dynamics in the beat, but when I get the vocal close to where I want it with the track if you just mess with the q for how the bandwidths over lap you can easily find a sweet spot to remove any final masking of the vocal from overlapping frequency in the beat w/o changing how you have set the beat very dramatically. I didn't know it had a global attack change, so that's gonna be pretty useful in the future! Good advice. Also, good advice to leave that fuck shit the fuck alone.

Thank you a lot for theses gems . I have noticed something. Even from the rough mix or version there was almost no masking. The vocal already had its space. What I've been working on lately is the complete opposite. Vocals are muddy and covering beats. It's a huge deal and I struggle with that.

+1 having a clean recording and good production are huge. But hey, we work with what we've got! Once you've got your vocal sounding neutral and controlled dynamically in solo, It might be worth trying it at a lower volume than you think it should be when playing with the beat, then use EQ and saturation to bring out those areas that help it cut.

That's something to keep in mind whenever watching any sort of tutorial. Weiss is great at what he does, but half the battle is honestly having quality samples, arrangement and recordings BEFORE you start mixing. That, plus getting a good static mix via gain-staging, faders and panning is will get you 85% of the way there. Never underestimate the "EQ" you can do with faders. Unless of course you're mixing vocals to a 2-track beat, then you just have to essentially Frankenstein things to get the overall picture of the mix to work together with the vocals. With that said, If you get those basic things, the mix SHOULD just flow. Correct a little here, correct a little there, add some "spice" here and there, "glue" it together and be done. As @RedSpark mentioned, that's not always the case so you have to work with what you've got, unless it's so horrid that it's not even worth the hassle.

Hey what if i am using saturn 2 on a bus to blend in for my mid range ? should l use linear phase

I don't personally find myself using "linear phase" crossover mode too often. Try it both ways, see what sticks.
