As a guitarist, I used to watch rig rundown videos. Now that I’m starting to study audio engineering, I’ve discovered a whole new world of gear. Vocal chains are crazy and really fun to analyze.

In my experience guitar players have a very good ear for tone and texture. It's a little advantage when moving over to engineering.

I try to record what I believe to be as close to a finished vocal as possible - so EQ, compression, de-esser, the works.

The main verb I believe is a print off of my Bricasti - I think the London Plate setting with an extended tail and the modulation turned up a bit. I thiiiiiink I discussed the delays in the video from earlier in the week.

Been lookin for a vocal chain for a while now... to make trap music... but all them other tutorials sound soo ass and the vocals are super harsh... this one instead sounds soo clean cant wait to test it with the autotune full on ... thank you so much buddy

That’s a pretty difficult vocal track to work with. The ‘Nee and Mee’ sounds are screaming for a dynamic eq. I also feel that Slates plugins are a little brittle sounding and on this vocal not the best choice I feel. The voice sounds a little thin so a plugin with a little warmth would be better IMO. That said... He explains the process really really well. Just not the choices I would have made.

how do your start by gain staging the mix ?

I don't typically mix on a console these days so my "gain staging" is just making sure all the clips are turned down enough for me to push the fader both ways.

For beginners I strongly encourage subscribing as a member, because there's SO much to learn, and it's the most cost effective means of doing it - plus members get access to me directly so I can offer guidance. That said, I know not everyone wants to do subscriptions, so I would say the most important video for beginners is "Mixing With Emotion" - while it's not comprehensive into one specific aspect of mixing, it's extremely comprehensive in terms of WHY we are mixing at all, and what exactly we are listening for.
