I'm using Logic for these tutorials, but they work the same for any DAW. In this video we look at the classic Real Rock Riddim - in essence it's a one drop with a specific bass-line which becomes a starting point for original variations... & that organ lick :)

oh dammit !!!!- the bass-line in this starting on A# should then go up to an F, not E!..... sorry... the bass in logic sometimes sounds sharp or flat in headphones... now i'm playing it on the iMac speakers i can hear the row of E notes at the end of the bass-line is a semi-tone flat... damn!!... i dunno whether to delete this video and do it again.

I had the Farfisa. Can't do: When a man loves a woman without it. The delay adds a lot and I thought that the snare sounded natural but a bit dull before you went on it. Mixing the snare with a bit of side-stick could work. Btw, I freakin' did not notice the E, that's alarming for my hearing. I checked it and both kinda works,) Oh. low frequencies are special, especially with high end rolled off.

Great vids and tutorials, you sure know what you’re doing and if I could make a special request. If you could do a tutorial on the song call “DONT LET ME DOWN” bruddah Walter is the artist please please and thanks abundantly. Maybe the regular beat or better(remixed) thanks.

Absolute class! Learning so much from this series. Thanks. This'll go down a treat here in Bristol. Any chance of a funk breakbeat series in the future?

+marcmeup1 thanks but i might have to scrap this and do it again, the Real Rock bass-line should go up a 5th (from A# to the F in this case, not up to the E which is a 4th)... i was wearing headphones and they often makes notes sound flat or sharp... it sound totally wrong on my iMac speakers

+marcmeup1 funk breakbeat... yeah we can do that, funk basslines is my speciality ;) - there's already some stuff about using ultrabeat for old-skool loop stuff in the ultrabeat tutorial series - funk breakbeat: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ssKwswDk1Co.htmlm50s ----- drum&bass-y breakbeat: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ssKwswDk1Co.html

+dancetech Shweeet - I'm super excited to hear that. My music theory isn't much cop so it's great to learn and watch you input notes while adding human groove to the MIDI. I'm more comfortable sampling - but to be able to create authentic grooves & licks to resample is the motherload imo. I'm currently pouring through the pages of Mike Adamo's superb "The Breakbeat Bible" for inspiration & info. Also recently started adding some classic late 70s Boogie to my vinyl collection. If you could do anything in that flavour too would be awesome. Examples that spring to mind: "Groovin You" by Harvey Mason, "Living for the Mind" by Brick, "Street Player" by Chicago & "Fly Like an Eagle" by the Steve Miller Band. Thanks again for sharing the magic with your unique tutorials! :D

+marcmeup1 well as i said watch that ultrabeat tutorial linked in my last comment... it shows how to use ultrabeat in the exact same was we used to use old skool samplers back in the day when all breakbeat styles were invented, so it shpws making a funk/hiphop style bassline loop variatioon and how the roots of drum&bass/jungle came about and how to do that... you might have to watch other parts of the ultrabeat playlist to understand the ultrabeat sequencer & synthesis settings etc..... as for old jazz funk & disco & crossover? i could sit here and tell you tracks all day from that scene back in the day - also old soul is a source of course

+dancetech I bet - haha! Like you - I love music across all styles - From Baile Funk to Cowfolk via Classical, Afro Beat, Dub, Jazz n Techno etc. I recently met Marly Marl at a gig he did in a local pub in Briz!!!! I've been listening to his music since I was 8 yrs old - way back in the day on Capital Gold. The great man signed one of my Cold Chillin' records after DJing & scratching old classics like a mofo. Got sucked into Jungle/DnB early too - was later a regular @ Speed & Metalheadz in the 90s :D Loved your Ultrabeat vid ! - as you say - recording live rhythms is special. A mate just gave me a bunch of LP perc bits n bobs which I've been recording into Ableton Live non-stop. Really adds that subtle magic. Beyond sampling tho - it's great to learn classic compositional techniques & instrument selections from true musos like yourself. :D

Dancetech, if you do a re-recording correcting the MIDI notes, please do it on the MacBook Air. It's an added value to see what gear we can use for building songs. I saw the new iPad 12.9 inch with a DAW and I'm thinking it's very close to the Air. If you make MIDI tracks and bounce them, record guitars and bounce the Fx's, you probably could eventually mix the song with audio tracks only. I'm used to bouncing pieces from Ableton and use the audio instead. It doesn't take much power. So how does it work in Logic reality?

+rawstarmusic the air 1.4ghz i5 (i have 2014 model) gives me exactly half tracks of the quad 3.4ghz i5 imac i own with logic Evans stress test. i cant make the video with the air tho cos i;d need to install the screen capture s/w.

dancetech You can do re-recording of the small bits needed with the demo version. Then transfer it to the other and the demo sign is gone. I use ScreeFlow and have done that. But the F isn't a problem tbh, have to be honest no matter how much I want to see the Air. My watched bass tutorial uses Logic and ProTools on some MacBook. Actually many famous songs where made on MacBooks. The 2014 is good before they start messing with the retina which I don't need at all. I run Logic 13" in 1152x720 and it works fine.

You were saying the bass was in A# major, whisk is a# c# f, where yo put the piano asA# D F and the guitar the same, did you have that project saved, if so just fix it and put the audio on your Chanel with a written explanation. Your allowed make one mistake 😃😃😃all the other videos were fine. Good series, are you going to do other styles?

+michael purcell A# major is A# D F (1st, major-3rd & 5th).. nah i'm gonna redo it, it makes me cringe listening to it on speakers lol

@dancetech
@dancetech 9 лет назад
+Dilla Oniel yeah, sorry, i messed up the note cos i was working on headphones and it's hard to hear the pitch with a very deep bass - Yes it is 1st, 5th and 3rd (major or minor 3rd depending if you are going for major or minor chords).... i re-did this video again with the correct pitch and added making the Studio One trombone lick as an extra.. here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oFypJuRpuBY.html
