I'm using Logic for these tutorials, but they work the same for any DAW. In this video we look at the classic 3-time break & how that is the link between classic reggae & dancehall & jungle & drum & bass.

Brilliant tutorial! I was born in Jamaica. My dad was in a well known roots reggae band, Justin Hinds and the Dominoes, so I grew up completely immersed in the music. I also love drum n bass/dancehall. I definitely still learned a lot from this. Cool to see how it all ties together. I knew it did, but I hadn't gone into the specifics.

These are brilliant. You have a pleasant presentation style and you're not about wasting time by assuming everyone who watches these won't be capable of following along at a reasonable pace. It's quite nice not to have to have even the simplest of concepts covered repeatedly. These are videos after all and can easily be watched and rewatched as many times as someone needs. The playback rates can even be adjusted.

Amazing, thanks for that. Quick question: do you happen to have a video on how to do the classic time stretching stuff in early Jungle but using Logic instruments?

Can you make a tut on the reggae riddim, or more specific your settings on bass guitar, and the drum kit you use. I heard that you have change the snare. Keep up the good work
@dancetech
@dancetech 7 лет назад
you can use any drum sounds you like, that's not really important.

The snare in this beat is different from the one from the first video where you showed us how to set up the drum kit. What snare is this? its much tighter, pitched and shorter

Reggae is a very bassy music, it's the main course during verses. I don't play it so much cause I practice without backing music. So do you use the normal Garageband bass for this? With clavinet, organ and horns there's the full setup. I think the horns and the strings are the hardest to tweak into useful sounding sections, needs a lot of modulation for volume and velocity.
@dancetech
@dancetech 9 лет назад
+rawstarmusic i've never tried it in garageband, but i;d use a similar softer bass guitar instrument. whatever garageband has. yeah horns are hard without a really good sample set, and even then it's nothing like real horns

dancetech I've kept a Roland JV1000 76- keys from the 90's and the strings are much better. It also has got the real natural tenor sax with modulation wheel plus tons. I also own a Yamaha W5 76-keys with fabulous organ and electric-pianos plus tons, Both flagships from the days and not much have changed since then. Most plug-ins selling are vintage. Outboards use no CPU and I can add 32 extra tracks of 1024 sounds and fX's but I have to connect outputs to a mackie to bounce it and then navigate through the sea of banks and and patches. The W5 is just a marvel. I miss a Yamaha TG-500 module with just epic horns for a £50 but still haven't found a replacement. Together they make up the full instrumentation it I want to and Logic can handle audio files and recordings and global FX's. My very very oldest 2.1 MacBook with 3 Gb of RAM handles it all with ease. I picked up my W5 flagship for £120 and Roland for £159. This was the old way of doing things and It's still is great. Mackie 12 has 4 mic preamps and my fireware audio interface has 2 additional mic preamps, line-ins and built-in multiband compressor, EQ, and reverb plus midi In/Out (£150) An extra midisport interface has 4 midi In/Out. That's my setup. 2 mic's, SE electronics 2200T tube and Sontronics small condenser. That's my setup running LP9 excluding instruments and the Melodyne Studio 32-bit suite..Haven't bought a thing for ages. Not that you've ever asked but now you know just for the hell of it:) ALL old stuff.

There is one question I am dealing with since long time: When is a beat or a song considered to be double time? I can see that your tempo is set to 76. But I could be also set to 152, couldn't it? So instead of having the kick at 1 and 3 and the snare at 2 and 4 in ONE bar, I could make a double time riddim and do it in TWO bars. Then the kick would be at 1, while the snare is at 3. Do you understand what I mean?
@dancetech
@dancetech 9 лет назад
+Frank Selassie yeah you can do that, but if you work at non double-time then its just easier cos the whole beat with both snare drops is all in one bar/region

You really studied the music in Hackney was it at Triangle?or Mellow mix? I see you have found out the change of reggae styles
@dancetech
@dancetech 9 лет назад
+Rommie Stair lol, no, there was no colleges back then afaik. i lived there; hackney/stokey & had a rehearsal studio round the corner from eddie grants place, coachhouse.
@dancetech
@dancetech 9 лет назад
+Rommie Stair btw... roots... get a straight reggae beat, put a 8th dotted delay on the whole kit (kick & snare) and you get swingbeat... the funky dreads soul2soul & all that ;)

Yes I use to hang around those ends we must have touched fist back in the days. I was tour manager to Bim Sherman back then. Worked with Adrian Sherwood what a small world.
@dancetech

+Rommie Stair yeah if was rufus ruffcut back then stokey & hackney... no beards or cereal bars ;) a lot of gear

Triangle and Mellow mix are rehearsal venues just off Stoke Newington high road, where all the reggae musicians use to hangout and super stars would pass through and jam. Black slate use it, Akabu, Michael Rose,Desmond Decker just to name a few.
