Tic tac boxes and a dental floss container that has a blue transparent window in it are what I used on my custom MSE-6 mouse Droid builds. I used pencils, even LEGO parts upside down, a old container from a round Bluetooth speaker too. Something out if nothing! Yeah baby!

Tic tac boxes and old cd cases are great for transparent sections like cockpit canopies or warpdrive nacelles. Cleat plastic soft drinks bottles and the right glue can do wonders for canopies etc and, if you have kids who've broken toys with LEDs, you've got free electronics and plastic.

Two jobs ago, I was part of a crew that would cast parts for the drama department of a small college every now and again. We used stuff called " Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty". Easy to work with, water based, little odor, and fairly durable. Not suited for large castings. Pops out of molds easily. It would be great for blister pack molds. Downside...takes a while to completely dry, depending on size of object, temperature and humidity. Overnight to a few days. This stuff has been awhile...since the '40s, I think. Buy a small can and give it a try - It's worth experimenting with.

LONG LIVE RESOURCEFULNESS, IMPROVISATION AND SUCH WONDERFUL CREATIVITY! Just to add to this GREAT PRESENTATION, there are so many common THINGS that most people buy over and over again from the local SUPERMARKET----and by "things", I mean, mostly, plastic FOOD containers----that can just be kept and PAINTED AND USED DIRECTLY without molding and casting needed. I know I'm stating the obvious, but just thought I'd add that in as a reminder of how commonly available potential set dressing and prop pieces are to be found in daily life. Along with things like those battery, tool and other misc blister packs, we have all kinds of bottle, jar and disposable take-away tops and lids that can be stacked together in all kinds of ways and painted directly. MUCH BETTER THIS STUFF WINDS UP IN A SPACESHIP SET THAN A LAND FILL! (I have built a very large spaceship set in my building, almost all of it from found objects...Of course, it helps that I'm living in an area full of light industry where zillions of other, larger scale REALLY UNIQUE items ---like discarded electronic casings, video and tv backs and components, vacuum cleaners, pool pumps, flexible tubing/hoses etc etc are easily and constantly to be found. Wonderful to be able to recycle these things in creative ways.). Thanks for the video. Lots of fun!

@TheSmugglersRoom 5 лет назад
Hey there. You know, i tried that and should have mentioned that in the video. I loaded up a couple with the mold release and it honestly did not work as well as the baby powder. I am thinking that certain plastics bond more than others, because the Tap set didn't even remotely bond together. But maybe I needed more mold release?

Hey there! Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching. We would LOVE to do a foam project, and we have a couple ideas for that. Just so I am sure we are on the same page, are you talking about insulation foam, foam board, or eva foam?
@dansautographs7099

The Smugglers Room thanks 😊 foam board or Eva foam but mainly foam board as it’s cheaper

The Smugglers Room and also if you use black liquid shoe polish it gives such a good weathering effect you put it on where you want then you take a paper towel 🧻 and then dabbing or either swiping depending on what effect you want

One day I want to make a space bed like a sleeping quarter but not sure how to plus I’m only 13 so I could only use foam board and EVA foam as don’t have any power tools except from a dremel

Could UV Resin work for the same application?
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom 2 года назад
possibly, but it might be more expensive than the SmoothOn product.

take the hyperloop challenge! make a youtube video showing a pod, a tube and show people getting into hyperloop pod, getting out of the pod. put the door in the side of the tube. like a old tumble dryer door. add sound FX . your 200 mile hyperloop track can be a scale model. remember it does not need to work, as its science fiction video. can be powerd by any renewable or magical energy. bulk snake oil , beeswax , AA batteries , mass hamster power farms or solar panels show how your hyperloop will circumnavigate the globe in just 1 hr. because that's amazing and more tham other hyperloop videos showing reimagined science. magical science. remember donate any funds you get from gullible investors to charity if your not running a scam!

Ok what do you use to mount everything to the wall? By the way I just ordered my first container if resin because of your video now everyone thinks I'm crazy scrounging through garbage 🤣

I drive my wife nuts with the stuff that I refuse to throw away. Hopefully buy the time I retire and we move to our new house that has a shop that I can totally dedicate to model making she can see that it is not a waste of time.

You can also use the cooking spray Pam instead of baby powder and the Pam will spread more evenly then the powder

That’s not a bad idea, I never thought of trying that!

Use plaster to cast your stuff, it's so much cheaper then resin.
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom Год назад
Plaster certainly works, however it does not hold up as well as resin.

Use mold release

Great work! (Never mind that 'less is more" guy) Hope this helps--> Mann ease release 200 (smooth-on) I use dry rice to calculate volumes, so I don't have water near the resin and to ensure There's no water contamination in the mold

Thanks Mark! Much appreciated. I was telling @WayneBakken below that I totally tried the Mann Mold Release on a few of the plastic pieces, but for whatever reason it didn't work. I use it on my Silicone molds all the time, but some of that plastic was brutal! Great tip on the rice!!! That's a great idea. Saves time drying and blasting with air to remove water. Thanks for that awesome tip!!!!

You’re right! That’s PolyEthelyne! Sorry, I’ll check my notes and give you a solid answer. -Mark Ps- I always shoot through all comments to make sure I’m not redundant...I guess I missed that one 🤭

BTW- baby powder will give you a satin or eggshell finish (as any mold release agent will) but it’s unpredictable. The GOOD news is that satin (or eggshell) finishes don’t require much sanding before painting!!

Gratuitous Sets no worries at all, I really appreciate the feedback. I just couldn’t believe that it was so difficult to remove some plastics and not all. I should have studied more science as a younger man 🤣🤣🤣

Mann 2831 is the brush on dissolved wax type release- that should do it. you used 200 spray?

Yes, you need a separating agent. Be sure to find one comparable with your resin.

Baby powder is not a good choice, you should use something that is fat-based. What worked very well for me is Vaseline or this spray, which you use to prevent the cookies from sticking to the oven after baking.
