@@TheSmugglersRoom quick question, do you have a video tutorial about fabricating user interface Huds from acrylic, transparency prints, and LEDs? I need to make some Star Wars HUDS similar to what would be found on a Starship Bridge. Laser etching and edge lighting is outside of my budget. Perhaps dual-layer acrylic with transparency sheets of differentially colored design elements could produce a depth effect once lit. Thanks again!

If you have a high profile part but don’t necessarily need the entire depth, make the initial casting (just of that part not the entire unit) in plaster, it’s cheap, soft, and really easy to alter after casting. Also, making a silicon mold of just the taller part allows you to do just a partial depth casting with minimal mold material. Yes, it’s an extra couple of steps before obtaining a finished mold but if materials are a concern it can be very worth it. When I took moldmaking in college our professor always pushed us to cast in plaster before even touching resin. No point in using expensive material just to test a new mold.
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom Год назад
All fantastic points. Thank you so much for that. I never considered not molding all the way to the top, make so much sense. I'll have to give the plaster a shot too. Much appreciated!
@missingallmymarbles7670
@missingallmymarbles7670 Год назад
@@TheSmugglersRoom considering how much plaster you can get for the price of even a “trial size” resin kit? Definitely worth experimenting with. Save the expensive stuff for final runs. Us geeks rarely have “extra” money laying around, better to save what you can and free up the budget to be used elsewhere. Plaster is also REALLY easy to carve, especially when it hasn’t dried out yet-great for adding details. If you have a component that you’re particularly fond of molding just that piece is great for making new assemblies especially if it’s not one that you have extra of.

Yes... as others have stated... I too LOVE the mix of UBER-VALUABLE Info with the "Goofy Humor" as that's MY Kind of humor! My fiancée and I are JUST Like this! I work building specialty and custom electrical harnesses for applications in the Aero-Space, Aeronautics, Medical and Scientific industries. And often to make people roll their eyes and laugh I insert some small part into my nose... then go up to them and say, "Hey I'm having a bit of a problem with this part! Can you help me?" They always Roll their eyes and laugh. It helps break up the work stresses. I also do this with my Grand Kids and they always say the same thing... "Not FUNNY Grandpa!" But they always laugh at my silliness! Life is WAYYY to short as was evident this past week in the passing of MY All time FAV and Inspirational Drummer/Percussionist/Lyricist and Writer, Neil Peart of the band RUSH! He was only 67 and suffered with brain cancer for the past 3.5 years. His passing will be felt for the rest of MY life as he was ALSO a friend and Mentor for my past soon to be 42 yrs. of Drumming! Thanks to your encouragement, I've had my first try at mold making. I am considering a degassing chamber, but am confused by all the choices. What size do you use? Glass lid or acrylic lid? Do you ever wish you had a different size? Likes/dislikes with your current degassing chamber? On some models the valve connects to the side of the chamber and others it is in the lid. what is the difference. I really appreciate your channel. You are doing a great job. The projects are fantastic and your production values are top notch. Keep it up.
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom 4 года назад
Hi There, those are all great questions. I started with a small degassing chamber, and i'll be honest . . . i wasn't happy. It was too small for a lot of what I did, but i have found that even when i am pouring smaller molds I like having the room for the material to fully expand, and the larger unit allows for that height. This 5 gallon unit seems to be perfect, and I love it: amzn.to/2vJkZk4. It also has the plexiglass top, and I really like that. All in all, i would recommend the bigger vessel if you can swing it. Hope that helps!

Thank you for another really awesome video. I am ok at finding grebles in the hardware store and Home Depot type shops. However, when it comes to electronics I have not been doing so well. For example, I have tried taking apart old VCRs and printers from different manufacturers. Like I said, I have not been having much luck with those items. Can you suggest what kind of electronics you usually find good grebles. A side note, I am looking for grebles that I will be using for star Wars weapons like lightsabers, blasters and large blasters. Thank you

Sorry I have dyslexia sometimes it is quite small it out right my question was drill out the center of the mold that you just made the greebly put in a clear resin and then with the LED or would that wreck I would that wreck the peace.
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom 4 года назад
@@joedoub No, it would not wreck the piece at all. You could 100% do that with an LED. The great thing about this technique is all the options you have with the parts afterward. Drilling and cutting the resin is super easy to do. This would totally work!

I’m building a blaster, one side is decked out but the other side is blank. Any ideas for what I could use?
@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom 4 года назад
I usually follow the style that the prop makers did when they made blasters, which is to have a “hero” side that has all the details, and then a simple side with only a couple things. That way it also slides into a holster easiest. So you could do some low profile additions to it, but keep it really simple.

how long does it take for a mold to dry.

@TheSmugglersRoom
@TheSmugglersRoom 4 года назад
Sorry, i should have included that. @davecybermunky is correct, they say 6 hours, but I typically give the silicone mold a full 12 hours, or overnight to cure. That has been super successful. The SmoothCast 300 that I used for the resin pieces cures in about 10 min, and after 20 min those pieces are ready to rock'n roll!
