For this weeks photography, I visit the incredible Forest of Dean Gloucestershire. Armed with a Nikon D750, I try to make sense of the messy forest and continue to practise my woodland photography skills.

Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. I really enjoy your sense of humour. It’s refreshing to watch someone who doesn’t take it all to seriously, views the world with curiosity and willing to try stuff out. The image with the little stream was my favourite from this video but also the 16x9 is a strong contender. 🌲🤪📷

I'm glad you like the little stream image, I may pop by that area again and see if I can tackle it at another angle. It's a beautiful little area. Thank you for your wonderful comment and for watching!

I too am drawn to the 16:9 images. To my mind too many landscape photographers whine about the chaotic nature of the forest. They truly can’t see the forest for the trees. I love the chaos of the forest and of nature in general.

You are one of my favorite people on the internet these days! I love your humor and dance breaks, love that you don't insist on only shooting the newest cameras, and love the images you create. In that last scene I think both images are great, but the wider shot is my favorite. I'm not sure that I would have seen the "life cycle" if I had been standing there, but now I'm inspired to look more closely for stories like that.

I like your rather understated approach to these videos. At first they seem so honest, and not trying to be "glossy", but in reality you are very, very good at your videos. Editing is good, you are consistent in your approach. Your slightly quirky sense of humour helps the overall presentation.

Maybe a bit lower and closer to the root ball (axis the tree from lower right to upper left corners with with a 45-60mm lens (preferably below f2) opened wide open and focus stacked, 5 shots focused to points on the first third of the trunk so the image starts sharp but still fades to soft even at that focal length, like a dying tree is going to tree heaven. Just a suggestion. That's where my mind went as soon s you showed it.

I really enjoy your work. I'm new to photography and I've noticed that everyone who knows what they're doing strive for composition that includes balance, framing, contrast, light, forground, and a lot of other variables. I may be wrong here, but I think nature inherently has a lot of chaos. So with that in mind, I look for compositions while framed well, don't have the primary subject matter centered in the photo. So many times while walking in the woods, (many years ago) what catches my eye, is not centered in my view. I'll often select a subject that is NOT centered in the composition, but slightly askew of center.

Beautiful woodland imagery. I love the saturated greens in the shots. Course I’m a former Fuji Velvia film shooter in my old Nikons so I’m partial to saturated colors anyway. :) Was out this past week looking for ephemeral spring woodland wildflowers to photograph and made a note to start bringing my hiking poles to help with stability while terming to navigate all the down limbs while carrying a heavy camera pack.
@CourtneyVictoria

I hope you found some spring wildflowers to photograph! You've definitely got to be careful and keep an eye on the ground while navigating locations like this where there are things scattered all over the ground. It's very easy to take a tumble.

Thanks for the video, Courtney. I kinda like the wide angle shots as well. Question: what brand of L bracket do you use on that D750? When shooting portrait, do you ever use a cable release, and if so, does the bracket interfere with using that cable release?
@CourtneyVictoria
@CourtneyVictoria 2 года назад
Thank you David! I use the 3 Legged Thing L bracket for my camera. It does have an open side so you can connect extra accessories, but I do find on the D750 access to the cable door is slightly impeded. I tend to use a delay timer more often so I've not spent any time adjusting the bracket to see if I can get the cable release to fit a little better.

Hi Courtney, I delightfully discovered your channel tonight as I was looking through Nikon DSLR photography videos as I am going back to using those great cameras. Your gear setup is exactly what I am looking to get, same two lenses for landscape but leaning towards the D780, but the D750 is a close second. I binged watched several of your videos already tonight and they are absolutely wonderful and just the right amount run time to retain your inspiring message and examples as well as enjoying your adventures. I'm a sudden new fan now and you have won a subscriber. I look forward to diving more into your playlist and any new ones in the future. Keep up the great work and all the best to you 📷😊. Question, I noticed you shoot a lot at or around f11 on both your Nikkor f4 zooms. Do you consider that to be the sweet spot of those particular lenses for landscapes?
@CourtneyVictoria
@CourtneyVictoria 2 года назад
The D750 is a cracking camera! I've not handled a D780 myself, but I'd like to one day to compare it against the 750. Thank you so much for subbing and watching! I really appreciate it and I am glad you are enjoying the content. Great question, I think I generally shoot between f/8 and f/11 for landscapes. I'd probably say the sweet spots for my lenses were between f5.6 to f/9 perhaps. I'm not too bothered by sticking to the sweet spots honestly, as my aperture really just depends on my subject, preferred depth of field and light situation. Although, I probably do like using f/11 a little too much ha!
@artsilva
@artsilva 2 года назад
@@CourtneyVictoria Yeah, the D750 Is a legendary camera. My friend here in town is an award winning photojournalist and prefers the D750 for most of his environmental work. The D780 tho has many features, power and extended battery life I am looking for for those multi-day hikes I tend to do at times. Thank you for your take on the aperture quality, I tend to be concerned with possible refraction/softness at f/11 and above on a 24Mp sensor but it looks like you're having great results in details with your choices. You just convinced me to pull the trigger soon on those two lenses with the 20mm f/1.8G being my prime landscape/astro/low-light lens. Loving the topics you are covering in your videos pertaining to landscapes and general mindsets of the photographic journey and reality.... Oh and keep dancing 😄
