When I make Shiitake substrate I like to mix it up in a concrete mixer which I have modified to mix it really well. I need to use a concrete mixer as the only oak wood chips I can get has been compressed into small bricks and I need to use water to break it back down into sawdust. The mixing process is fast and I can make about 20x mushroom blocks off one mix. In this video I make 10 bags with a half load for the camera.
I use a concrete mixer as it is a lot cheaper than a ribbon blender. If I was making a large volume of shiitake substrate I would need something bigger, but I simply do not mix enough shiitake substrate to warrant anything larger. I use a rubbish bin lids and some tie downs to create a lid so it doesn't spill, and I can turn the mixer horizontal to increase it's efficiency. I mix it for around 5 minutes
The shiitake take about 2-3 months to incubate.
My recipe for this batch was
👉 9kg oak sawdust
👉 1kg wheat bran
👉 12kg water
