Hi Marion! :)) I won't lie, it does take a while haha :) This one took couple of days to film, and a bit more to edit. But it's worth it! I just need to practice more, so making and filming simultaneously goes faster :) Thank you so much dear ❤️ As for the flowers, I didn't actually engrave them, but made these lines by stamping. I've used the letter "I" from my letter stamps and just stamped these lines using it. Then I shaped them with pliers :) And that's all, pretty simple, but looks nice ❤️

Hiya Basa, fancy meeting you on here. Just got the Optivisor No 4 from Cookes, wow! My near vision is good but these are a game changer, I know Andrew does push a bit for even people with 20/20 vision to try them and I've got a cheaper, but not by much, pair but these win on many fronts, vision, comfort, ease of use etc... Seeing the work that close and in that clarity is great, I love them after just a few days. Several people said get the No4 lense and they were spot on, the distance from the front of them to the work is enough that there is no conflict when sawing or other work. I did worry about hitting myself in the face with the saw but no problem. With your use of very small components you may want to give them a try, no more eye strain for me squinting at the work piece, not to mention the lines around my eyes... Keep up the great work please, the longer the video the better as the more info teaches and entertains us. Take care...
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 4 года назад
great suggestion Steve! Thanks a lot, I was thinking about trying this. My close up vision is great, but like you've said, working with small compounds it still gets tricky. And this helps to see well without having to put your face too close to work haha :) I'm definitely going to check this out!

Hi Basia, loved this. I have a question: Why do you choose easy solder for bezel closure - especially since you have additional joins to make? There is always a reasoning behind a choice, I want to learn!! I always want to learn why one thing IS done as well as why another ISN'T. If you would share your thoughts, I'd be thrilled. Thank you again.

This is beautiful, thank you. One question-do you work much with rough gems normally? if so, what methods do you find work best for setting them? Bezel strip?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 4 года назад
Thank you so much for watching and your comment! ❤️ I don't usually work with rough gems, so I don't have a set method. Few times I did, I've used bezel strip, but more like a gallery wire, it was easier to properly hold the gem, and looked very nice :) Prong setting might be more fitting in that case, too.

Hiya Lady Stardust and what a great video, again! Thank you for the video and work, you always get the best comments and this video it shows why... All the technical parts were perfect, lighting, framing, focus etc, but the sound was off, I could not hear your dulcet tones describing the process. lol. The subject was spot on what a magical stone and the setting was a wonderful supprise. You showed off your great skill in hand cutting those perfect little flowers, how was the new saw? I knew I'd kill more than a few blades getting to grips with the knew saw so I saved a bit more than I wanted to, I wanted my present now... so got the next one up with the cam locking, it's wonderful. So easy to change out the broken blades every time, ok not so many now as it's a wonderful saw to use. But back to your video, a pleasure to watch and yet again perfect use of the Platinol. Did you know Cooksongold sell it now? I first came across planishing a few hundred years ago in metalwork classes at school, I think I was about thirteen, and we had to make a three sided brass dish with a punched boarder and planashing inside of it. Being told to mark up something by hitting it with a hammer... at that tender age... perfect. So yet again entertainment and learning, thank you, long may you continue. Take care... Steve

Hi Steve! I'm really happy you've enjoed the video! 😀 Of course you couldn't hear me talking, my voice would completely ruin the mood of the video haha :)) It was meant to be as relaxing as possible, but I really appreciate your sweet words, and I think one of the future ones will have the voice over 😄 ❤️ Yes, I absolutely love the knew concept saw, it's so light and easy to use, and that quick release thingy is just, perfect. Though I've broken few blades mindlessly because I've tightened it too much! :(( Heartbreaking, but at least I've learned haha. Didn't know Cooksies stock Platinol now! That's awesome. Though it will be ages before I need another bottle, this thing lasts forever.... Thanks and take care!

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing The choice of music was inspired and it was relaxing. They don't warn you about over tightening the blades, I lost a few like that too so you're not alone. So beautiful ♡ How do you know when to use which type of solder? Soft/hard etc?
@stephencoster9532
@stephencoster9532 Год назад
Hard solder contains the most silver, so it stays close to the piece's colour over time as oxidization occurs. It also has the highest melting point, so we usually use it first. Then medium then easy. An interesting effect is when you have melted solder, its re-melt temperature is higher than when it was first used. So you can use hard for a few different joints without melting the previous joints if you are careful. Try to direct the flame/heat away from existing joints. Trial and error is the best teacher for this. Steve

Hey! I’ve got a question unrelated to this video but i trust your opinion... pliers! What pliers do you recommend if i want them to last well? I don’t want to spend more than i need to though :)
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 4 года назад
Hi Amy! I know exactly what you mean. I started with cheap pliers from ebay (about 10-15 pounds for the set of 6). They lasted me a long time, yes, but not because they were great, but simply because I was on a tight budget. Unfortunately they were rubbish and would constantly leave marks on the metal, so I would have to spend extra time cleaning and sanding all of that. With time, I started buying single pliers of better quality (for about 5-10 pounds each). I got round ones and flat ones first, then half round, ring bending ones, and flat with thin nose. And although I've spend more money, I'm now saving myself a lot of frustration haha, but most importantly time, and my work is cleaner and better. So I'd say it's up to you if you want to start with cheaper product and then upgrade later on, but this way you will end up paying twice. Suppliers like Cooksongold or Rio Grande offer great range of pliers, and their cheaper, basic products are still good quality. Be careful with these cheap sets on amazon and ebay, they are poorly made, china imports. Hope that helps! You've inspired me to make a short video about pliers actually, so it might be available on the channel in the near future :)
