Making Small Photo Prints

There's one more reason to make small prints, and it's close to my heart. If you've ever doubted what you're doing, seeing your work printed will grant a little faith in yourself and your images. There's something about seeing them real and tangible (even if they're small) that makes them seem more worthy of the attention you hope they'll be paid. Printing's been edifying and encouraging for me, and I'm sure it will be for you too.

My gear for this vid:
Nikon Z6/Z6II
Nikkor 35mm 1.8S
Nikkor 24-70 F2.8
Nikkor 85mm F1.4
Big printer - Canon ImagePROGRAF Pro-500 (it might be the 1000 where you are)
Small printer - Canon Selphy
RODE Lavalier Go
Zoom H6
Good old Manfrotto Tripod
Daewoo Damas (which now has a dent in the roof)
For the paper nerds, the prints were made on:
A2 - Ilford Satin
A3+, A3, A4 - Canon Luster
4x6 - Durix Luster (It's sold locally, but I think made in Germany)
(After sifting through hours of sonic despair) I get all my music from Artlist:
Kiss The Earth - Avalanche - Instrumental Version
Seth Parson - With You
Family Kush - 18 Kilograms
Sean Williams - Beautiful Twilight - Instrumental Version
Thank you:
Eric for thuggin'
Jack for the scooter (RIP)
Charles for the malevolent face
Jitse for going to the island with me

I totally agree with you. I have been printing small photos for years, for example 7 x 7 cm, 9 x 9 cm, 15 x 11 cm. I remember that many fellow photographers laughed at my "postage stamps" but I was always in favor of printing in those sizes. I believe that the connection you get with an image of that size is much more intimate than the one you get with a large format image. In a large photo, the eye "dances" across its surface, but with a small photo, with just one glance, you are immediately drawn into it.
@chrisdacanha

Those dudes are missing out, but they'll come around! And spot on about the intimacy of a small print.
@stuchandler1296
@stuchandler1296 23 дня назад
Totally agree, although I use 5x7s because they are marketable when matted to 8x10. I get all the benefits of printing that you describe here, but the ones that really work can be exchanged for money to keep the process going 😊
@chrisdacanha
@chrisdacanha 23 дня назад
Great idea! Do you do the matting yourself or send it off?
@stuchandler1296
@stuchandler1296 23 дня назад
@@chrisdacanha I do my own matting - I get kits (mat/backer/crystal bag) from Golden State Art, then assemble the mats with Lineco linen hinge tape and mount the prints with Lineco mounting corners. EZPZ and result looks great. I've had to do some finessing with media settings because my Canon PRO-1000 wants most fine art papers to be loaded from the back, but doesn't accept 5x7s there. So far I've had good luck with MOAB papers printing with the MPP media setting instead of HDFAP. And of course I use the correct ICC profile. So far so good. I filled my walls up with A2 prints some time ago and had to rethink what I was doing. Your video gave me some new ideas that I'm trying, so thanks!

Two of my favorite landscape prints that I ever made are 5"x7". There is something magical about that size (to me) that draws you in and encourages you to be quiet and think. Large prints are for impact, like someone shouting at you. Small prints are like a whisper that invites you to listen more carefully.

It's funny because years ago my mom got me one of those small Canon Selphy printers and it's one of my favorite things. It's cheap to operate, it prints really fast, the ink doesn't dry and each ink cartridge comes with it's own paper. It's the perfect printer for most of what I print. And besides that, it makes the funkiest little noises when printing 😊

An outstanding, sane proposition, Chris. I've been practicing this "small printing" for nearly 20 years partly to accomplish the self-investigation/realization that you suggest. It works. It's also an affordable way to "live with" images for a while to develop a better feeling for their overall look. Well-done video with excellent vidgraphics.

Well done! As a professional wedding/portrait photographer, our pro lab developed (medium-format film), analyzed and printed color-corrected "proofs" for us. For the Hasselblad, those were 5x5. When I transitioned to digital in 2000, we switched to numbered and white-bordered 4x6 prints. No better tool to generate sales than those little prints. I still love the nostalgic look of small prints like yours. They are a great analog device for viewing and archiving! My lab still charges only 29 cents for a lab-corrected Fujifilm Crystal Archive Professional print.

Great video and concept. I had the same epiphany several years ago but I went even smaller. Try 3x2 or even smaller. It becomes a challenge at that size because the image needs to be very simple and the composition has to be just right. I have really enjoy this process because you have to be aware of how a tiny print is going to look even before you hit the shutter button. I have found that a simple, dramatic B&W image looks good in a frame that is considerably larger and with several layers of mat to draw attention to the print and make it stand out.

The RU-vid gods directed me to your video and I am grateful. I too have loved small prints for decades, for all the reasons you mentioned. The smaller size makes the compositions stand on their own, until you can pull it closer and see details.. In pre-internet days of the 1980’s, Kodak made special B&W postcard photo paper you could use in the darkroom. It already had the postcard printing on the back, so you could print a real photo, get a fine technical pen and send a short letter that is a little piece of art to a friend. You can also print even smaller photos, trim them out and glue them into the pages of a nice heavyweight sketch book... I once found a beautiful vintage revolving postcard rack at an antique shop, took it home and had fun displaying small photos in it. Having a real photo to hold in your hand is a beautiful thing.

@chrisdacanha
@chrisdacanha 15 дней назад
I'm keeping my prints stacked up for now. I use them when making pairs for the project I'm working on, and I like handing the stack to anyone interested who visits the studio. I'll likely slip some of them into the booklets I'm making when I start selling those as a little extra:-) For storage I recommend just a dry, dark space. I put some silica gel packets in my cabinet to deal with the humidity. For display, I'd sooner choose just a few of them and have them decently framed with a bigger mat. There's something special about a small print in a quality frame.

@yozhiworks 23 дня назад
Really inspirational! How would you recommend printing photos when a lot of them have different sizes and crops? Not all my photos are the right ratio for 10x15, and I am also curious how to make those borders when preparing to print. Cheers!
@chrisdacanha
@chrisdacanha 23 дня назад
Cheers! And good question, it's something I've had to deal with printing for other photographers. Regardless of the crop, I'll usually try position the image so that the border is equal on 3 sides (say top, left and bottom) and that'll leave the 4th side (right) with a thicker boarder. Then I'll just cut that to size with a steel ruler and a blade. It makes for a cleaner looking print by avoiding the different border widths. I print out of Lightroom, and in the print tab you can set the border width. For 4x6s I always print with a half cm border.

In my case I use the prints as tools for the project I’m working on. I’m printing to build the project rather than display parts of it. @@whothennow24 Sure thing! I just mean that by printing all these photos small and for myself, I can use them in the selection and sequencing parts of the project. By displaying parts of it, I mean that if I were to print just a few of them big and hang them up right now, they might not even be the images that make it in to the final project. I love making bigger prints to hang on the wall:-) One day I will do that with some of the photos from the project I’m working on.
