Hi retro-lover! In this video you will learn all about what made music on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) so unique, what set it apart from its biggest 16-bit rival (the Sega Genesis/Megadrive) and, most important of all, how retro-minded music producers and composers can get that classic SNES sound in their music today! You'll get an in-depth look at the Koji Retro Gaming Keyboard plugin from It Might Get Loud Productions: a virtual instrument that aims to replicate that classic lo-fi, noisy, and gloriously cheesy sampled-instrument-sound that made those SNES soundtracks SO nostalgic. I offer up a bit of retro tech history, a tour of Koji's features, a couple of original example tunes, many samples of Koji's preset sounds, and my final take on Koji's value for producing retro-influenced music in a modern digital audio workstation (DAW). Enjoy, retro-friend!

Most of the sounds are from CASIO 80s keyboards!!! I've had a CASIO SA-1 in my childhood and sounds exactly the same!! It would be possible that some SNES music uses similar sounds because of the composer, but that's not the "SNES" sound that we all remember!!! Look for a video of CASIO old keyboards and you will see and hear. Greetings from Argentina.

This chorus sound is the essence of resting in a jrpg inn! Beautiful! I'm more of a Sega fanboy still and prefer the Mega Drive chip sound but damn is that a good vst.

Hey Dimi, haha, indeed! I actually found myself playing melodies and chord progressions I usually don't while making those examples, I think because the sounds really reminded me of games I played back in the day (and brought scenes like that to mind). Thanks for watching, mate!!

Does it work for Ableton 10 (64 bit) for Windows??
@TheGhostMall

Hi, thanks for watching and for your question. As far as I'm aware, yes, it should. I don't use Ableton myself, but I am on Windows with a 64-bit DAW (Studio One) and it's working great for me. If you have any concerns, though, you could always drop a note to the manufacturer before buying, they seem to be very responsive and helpful. I hope that helps, good luck making music!

I know this is old, but how did you achieve the swing groove? Given the sort of quantized nature of this stuff, I don't think you just played it that way, right?
@TheGhostMall
@TheGhostMall 3 года назад
Thanks for your great question. Well, I actually do play everything in via keyboard, even drums; I don't program/sequence via the piano roll. However, I do (usually) use Input Quantize while playing in parts, and for a swing feel like in this New Jack Swing piece, you want to go with 16th-note triplets, or use a preset pattern (if your DAW has those) of 16th notes with 100% swing. Either one should come very close to the right feel. I hope that helps, thanks for watching!

I got it.. but how do i install it? it has 3 folders and I don't know what to do in them. I want to play that funky music
@TheGhostMall
@TheGhostMall 5 лет назад
Hi again my friend, thanks for watching! Let me see if I can help. I'm trying to remember how the installation folders were, but did they maybe list AAX, VST, and VST3? If so, then you have to choose the right format for the DAW you use. (VST is most common, but I use VST3 because my DAW - Studio One - supports it.) Then, inside the folder are versions for 32-bit or 64-bit; this refers to your operating systems (like Windows). The newest versions of Windows are almost all 64-bit. So, for example, in my case I chose the 64-bit file in the VST3 directory. Now, you have to copy that file into the right place on your computer for your DAW to recognize it; this really depends on what program you use as a DAW. But in any case, this article might help you: helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-us/articles/115000177084-VST-plug-in-locations-on-Windows (I copied the file into the place they mentioned in the article for VST3 - C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3 - and then Koji showed up and worked fine for me in my DAW.) I hope that helps but, if not, please try contacting product support from It Might Get Loud. They were quite nice and helpful when I had a question. Wishing you luck!
@azurebluefox2437
@azurebluefox2437 5 лет назад
@@TheGhostMall Thank you, ill look into that after I get a DAW. I don't have one, thought Koji was one, so you can see my confusion. I know you mentioned it before, but whats a good, cheap (enough) DAW that you'd suggest? and do I need a musical Keyboard?
@Ugritone
@Ugritone 5 лет назад
Hi! Yes Koji comes with folders including the plugin which will work in most DAWs (Check out system requirements here www.itmightgetloud.org/system-requirements/?v=3e8d115eb4b3). I'd strongly suggest Reaper, which has a free fully-functional evaluation license. Super solid and super simple to use. Any questions you may have feel free to email us at info(at) itmightgetloud (dot) org. Cheers, -Ron
@TheGhostMall
@TheGhostMall 5 лет назад
AzureBlueFox, ahh, I see. I definitely understand the confusion, right; a DAW (digital audio workstation) is a recording program that lets you use and record several plugins (like Koji) at once, and also record sound using a mic, for example. The ones I use are Studio One and Reason, but both cost quite a bit. I notice that Ron from It Might Get Loud Productions also replied to your comment, and suggested Reaper as a free DAW, and many people I know use and love it! Now, if all you want to do is play one instrument at a time - not record several at the same time - then you may not need a DAW. You might just want a free VST Host Application, which will let you load up a plugin (like Koji) and play with it, one at a time. I've never used these, but here is a good article listing some: bedroomproducersblog.com/2011/05/16/bpb-freeware-studio-best-free-vst-host-applications/ And to answer your other question, yes, usually having a MIDI keyboard connected to your computer is the best way to play these instruments, that is what I do. Good luck, and if I can help again please let me know. Thanks for watching!!

@@TheGhostMall I want to thank you for all you help, I got Reaper and didn't know how to use it. I looked up a tutorial so I wouldn't burden you with all my questions, I want to at least put effort into researching a bit on my own before I ask you again. Not saying its not for you, but how is this simple? the tutorial was informative, but why isn't the folders not named Drum 1 or something? Its not so simple for someone who has no experience. I'll probably just stick with trying to make music with Instruments and sound making objects. Again, thank you for the help, but its to complex for me right now. Sorry. I still like the music you make. so i'll still be around.

no need of retro plug in for that SNES spice or N64 for music, most of nintendo tune where made originaly with E-MU synth sample from there hardware, if you have the Emulator II from Arturia you get the same sample from the originale hardware sampler, or you can also find E-MU protheus 1,2,3 soundbank from the original rack, sell by digital factory, it cover almost all videogame music from this period.
