I'm frequently asked about chiptunes, so here's how to make chiptunes. First, you need the correct VSTs or virtual instruments. Here are the ones I use:

Another great free synth to check out is Odin II by The Wave Warden. It has dedicated chiptune oscillators as well as a custom drawable waveform which is bitcrushed to be chip-ish. It also has FM oscillation as an option. Additionally, it's just a solid synth overall, with emulations of a lot of classic analog filters (Moog, Korg, Oberheim, and Roland, I believe). It's not only good for chiptune stuff, it's also good for virtual analog emulation and making complex, evolving textured sounds.

Awesome vid, I'm on a Mac so tweakbench wont work for me. Is anything similar to tweakbench plugins? Currently I'm using Minibit, Dexed, Excite Snare Drum, RYM2612, PCM2612. I'd like to have a couple more vst/plugins to expand my musical choices. Looking for a more sega type sound font with tweakbench type workflow. Thanks everyone!

Super Nintendo composers did not use "soundfonts." This is extremely misleading. They used compressed samples they they usually collected from popular keyboards of the time such as the Korg M1. These samples could be manipulated with the SNES's soundchip.

Am I the only one who feels like 15 minutes are missing from the start of this video? There was basically no introduction to ANY of these programs or even how to use them. What am I supposed to do with this information? I followed these links but they just go to soundfonts on pages that were removed and lead to a 404. This video isn't even that old.

I’ve been making chiptune for 10 years and no one in the greater chip tune community cares. Fake bit is considered to be the same thing.

@@carzybacon47 In my circles people do draw a distinction and I, myself, wouldn't say that they are the same. Fakebit is a sub-genre of chiptune; that is to say a song I compose on the 2A03 is a chiptune but it's not fakebit and a song I compose in FL Studio using "8-bit" plugins and port out to an mp3 is fakebit and is a chiptune.

I wouldn’t call soundfonts a gray area and call them legal as Nintendo let Toby Fox use the Earthbound soundfont, something created by nintendo, in his Smash Megalovania.
