There is nothing as beautiful as a hand thrown pot. I love terracotta. It may be dirty to work with but the end result is beautiful. As you said it is soft and easy to work with. All the factories in China cannot produce quality.
Look up a garbage can Raku kiln. that's probably the cheapest you can get and still fire acceptable pieces. All of your work would have be raku so you'd have to look into that. Be careful though because when you make your own janky kiln's things may explode if you don't know what you're doing. Look up kiln design's and if you have enough space a wood kiln would even work. the only problem is you have to be there for the whole firing process
