Hi guys! Last week I got into collecting nettles and making string from it! Did you know that stinging nettle used to be an important source of textile fibres before industrialised cotton production took over?
I find it exciting and inspiring that you can get high-quality material out of a plant that grows so abundantly that it's considered a weed! Of course, getting those fibres out of the plant is hard work. In this video, I show a simple method of extracting the fibres - there are other methods as well, e.g. soaking the nettle in water first, and I'm going to try those out later!
Here's a link to Sally Pointer's nettle string video: • Basic Nettle String She has made many fascinating videos about nettles, they are a great resource!

In this video, I decided to add subtitles only in Finnish, because many of my students seem to prefer this kind of style. You can still get English subtitles as well because RU-vid provides an automatic English translation that you can select in the CC settings. I encourage you to try and listen without any subtitles once you feel comfortable doing so! Maybe you need subtitles at first, but the second time around you could do without.
Nowadays I offer Finnish lessons on *iTalki (The following is an affiliate link - when you register through this link, I may earn a commission.): www.italki.com/affshare?ref=a... If you register through this link, you get $10 to use in iTalki! To book a lesson with me, you have to make an iTalki account first. At the moment, I'm focusing on intermediate and advanced students.

heippa hei! kiitos todella mahtavasta videostasi!

I have just started experimenting with natural fibres, what a coincidence! Thank you for the video :)

Have you really! Which fibres have you tried so far? I was thinking I might try collecting fireweed fluff once they're done flowering. Spinning it might be challenging though :D

@@FinnishFlow I have only tried making cordage out of rhubarb peel and iris leaves so far, which isn’t particularly useful or strong, but it sure is pretty! I’m definitely going to try making some out of nettle

@@aloe_vera3740 Iris leaves, wow! Sounds lovely :) I just ordered a spindle and some plant fibres (banana, soy bean) to learn the basics of spinning. Later I'm going to try spinning some Finnish fibres, I hope. A whole new world for me!

At 52.5 you say (and write) jälellä. Could that be dialect for jäljellä? It is the only one I could find resembling the word jälellä.
@FinnishFlow
@FinnishFlow 10 месяцев назад
Exactly, jälellä is short for jäljellä!

At 4.42 approx you write and say litistelyn jälkeen. I can only find litistetyn, which means flattening so I wonder what is going on here. Is it dialect?
@FinnishFlow
@FinnishFlow 10 месяцев назад
Litistely is the process of flattening.
