I had tasted and made traditional Mexican tamales with a corn husk wrapping. The contrast in taste just by using a banana leaf was extraordinarily different.

FULL RECIPE:
Costa Rican Tamales
Process #1: Pork
2 lb Pork loin (1 slice per tamal)
1 1/2 onions (1/2 diced)
8 cloves garlic (6 crushed, 2 minced)
2 bell peppers
2 sticks celery
Culantro (or Cilantro substitute)
Thyme Sprigs
Oregano
Complete Seasoning
Lizano Salsa
1 10g packet Chicken Bouillon
Boil for 5 minutes then turn down to medium low for 1 hour.
Process #2: Rice
2 cups white rice rinsed until clear water shows
1/2 bell pepper, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 onion, diced
Add rice, salt, water just enough to cover
Start on high till boiling then turn to medium
Cook for 7 minutes and set aside
Process #3: Accessory ingredients
Carrots cut into disks, one per tamal
Russet potatoes, peeled and cut into slivers
Bell pepper, cut into slivers
Process #4: Masa Dough
800 grams Masa Rica flour
4 tbsp Ajinomoto (MSG) seasoning
4 tbsp Bomba (salt, cumin, curry) seasoning
Culantro
1 stick celery
200-220 grams Lizano Salsa
12 cloves Garlic peeled
2 medium small onions
2 10g packets Chicken Bouillon
1 cup Chicharron or Bacon grease
Process #5: Tamale structure
1/2 cup masa dough laid out
1/4 cup rice
1 each of pork, carrot, potato, and pepper slice
