Making the Chanel Jacket #1 - Trim Making and Shaping, Front Stabilization and Dual Buttonholes!
#sewing #howtosew #sewingtutorial
Hi Everyone and Welcome Back To My Bucolic Life Channel. Meet my new sewing tutorial.
Welcome to the first episode of Making the Chanel Jacket. This is going to be fun! In this video I will explain my overall process, my trim choice, how to make it and shape it to fit the jacket, 101 ways that you need to stabilize the center front piece before you can even get started on buttonholes. And finally, step by step through the process of making the dual buttonholes which are hand embroidered/knotted on the outside and bound on the inside/lining side. Whew~ And we are just getting started!
Thank you SO MUCH for watching!
~Marie
Thank you for watching this video! I am using the book COUTURE SEWING, The Couture Cardigan Jacket, Secrets from a Chanel collector by Claire Shaeffer and I highly recommend that if you want to create this jacket you purchase the book. I am also using the Vogue 8804 pattern, which is also by Claire Shaeffer. I have modified the pattern to fit my needs as far as length and fitting issues. As I strive to follow Claire’s guidance in spirit, I do go on my own as far as technique.
If you are interested in showing your own make of this pattern,

I’ve been sitting here enjoying your video to the max. It’s been years since I did buttonholes by hand. Such a labor of love. I’ll wait till tomorrow for the second video. Not rushing so I can savour them one per day slowly like a fine wine. Thank you again. ❤️

On a previous video, I commented that Claire had been given access to some of the Paris couture workrooms. She is showing the techniques used there. I noticed in the new trims book she put out that she mentions numerous times that the Chanel garments were not perfect. Claire has introduced materials which they did not use: facings, interfacings, etc. The trims served to stabilize edges in the original garments. Also, Chanel suits were not meant for hard wearing. I always refer to them as "Dallas ladies do lunch".....

Just thought I’d share I’ve been looking for fusible tape used instead of stay stitching I know Marie has said she purchases hers from Etsy I can not do that where I live - they will not post also it’s quite expensive So I’ve been playing with a few ideas when I came across fusible naming tape It works!!!! and is so much cheaper Admittedly if it’s a tight corner to go around I’ve needed to cut and shape but in general it is narrow enough and really works well

Indeed a labour of love. And it´s indeed all in the preparation. Yay for threadmarking and basting, both of which I do all the time! Enjoying your processes so much.

Thankyou, I came to see specifically about that placement of the front piece basting, since if you baste over the stitching line and then to stitch to quilt, you will SEW THROUGH the basting threads, making it impossible to smoothly pull out the basting. I had considered going off pattern, and the pattern itself does not say to *remove the basting*, so I had wondered if it was supposed to remain... Glad I checked here!❤

Hi Marie, Another wonderful video. I don’t know that I would ever be able to do this method, but you are a fabulous teacher. I have found some great pins for slippery fabric. Not really sure where I got these but the little plastic case has Clover on the top and Japan on the bottom. They are u-shaped with 2 pin legs, 1.5 inches long and 3/16th of an inch wide. They top u shape is bent slightly upward about 3/8 an inch to grasp. They hold great!

Hi Marie! First of all your garden looks amazing!! Are those all squash or did I see a baby pumpkin too? Which is technically a squash too, I guess. What fun to have all those out in your yard to pick from. Some how I messed the skirt so I’ll have to go back and watch it. The braid came out beautiful! I certainly would not of thought to do that. I have never seen a buttonhole hand sewn, only on a machine. I’m so impressed!! They really looked good! I’m looking forward to watching the next one but it will have to wait till tomorrow. Take care!! 😊
